Myth as explained in the book is to be “defined as a complex of stories, some no doubt fact, and some fancy, which for various reasons, human beings regard as demonstrations of the inner meaning of the universe and human life”. The common person sees myth as something that is not true, something that is just a tall tale or a lie. Myth is used to explain or legitimize the natural order of the community’s institutions and behavior. Myths portray a lot about life, for example, myth can shape how you see yourself and also how we see others. It can show world order or show the chaos and evil. Pan Gu is a giant who grew up inside of the cloud for 18,000 years, until one day when he finally awoke and stretched his arms which broke the egg and separated heaven and earth. The light and pure substances rose to make the sky and heavens. The heavy matter fell and created the earth. This was all new to Pan Gu, he thought that the two matters would mix again if he didn’t do something about it. So Pan Gu held the heavens apart from the earth, while he continued to grow for the next 18,000 years, until the heavens were 30,000 miles from the earth. After he realized the heavens were stable he leg go and shortly after he died. Pan Gu’s body created landmarks on earth and his fluids created rivers, streams, and stocked the clouds with rain. His voice was thunder and his breath was the wind, his left eye became the sun and his right eye became the moon. Pan Gus body shaped the earth. Centuries later Nu Wa, a roamer of the earth created by Pan Gus body, became lonely after contemplating that she was the only one thing like herself.
