Papel Cabinet
A beautiful cabinet in the Dallas Museum of Art shines beyond many items around it both literally and figuratively. Made of mahogany, mother of pearl, tortoiseshell, and ivory, its highest point is a two-headed bird decorated with ivory diamond shapes. Down below, the feet of the cabinet are made of mahogany carvings, creatures that most resemble a lion. The lions have a golden sheen to them. The cabinet is a large, beautifully constructed piece of furniture and art that has both form and purpose. While the artist of this piece is unknown, the first known owner of this cabinet was Don Melchor Portocarrero, third Count of Monclova, Viceroy of Peru. It was likely built for him for his home. The inside is just as magnificently decorated as the outside, as well as being spacious and full of drawers for functionality. The 17th-century three-dimensional piece stands at eight and a half feet tall, just over seven feet wide, and about two feet deep. The mass of this cabinet takes up a lot of space, even in the large rooms of the DMA. …show more content…
The two-headed bird at the top has both heads turned opposite to create a completely symmetrical look, as well as the whole of the cabinet itself. One part of the piece is not symmetrical, the coat of arms that sits framed inside the bird, which is likely the coat of arms of the original owner. There are beautiful organic shapes made of mother of pearl, the shapes are random and not geometric, but combined they make an implied floral pattern. Not only is it a gorgeous piece of art it is also a very functional piece of furniture. According to the DMA “when these doors [of the cabin] were opened, the owners could display their holdings of small

This piece is in honor of the University’s Centennial Anniversary and is labeled as a Centennial Pickaxe. In a lower description, it states that twelve artists used blank canvas pickaxes in order to portray the theme of “ Prosperity for all emanates from prosperity of mind.” These axes were to be auctioned off to benefit the R.C. Morgan Scholarship fund in the fall of 2014 and all axes are in display around campus. Margarita Cabrera’s axe is located in the 3rd floor of the library and is titled “Deep Mined”. B3)…

The Double Cabinet is a very symmetrical furniture piece. Visually, it is split into four sections, two on the top and two on the bottom. Each quadrant is decorated with an illusionistic perspective relief that is surrounded by a carved frame. The perspective reliefs are carved to look like the interior of a room, this combination makes one of the cabinet doors. The Double Cabinet has four fluted pilasters, two on the top and two on the bottom, each pilaster seems to support the entablatures. In addition, the lion paw feet that protrude outward support the cabinet so that it is roughly four inches above the floor. Under the middle entablature there are two drawers with the same circular carved flower that is shown on the cabinet doors and on the running frieze.…

Engraved, chased, and etched, the interlacing Celtic-like scrolls and knots wrap delicately and symmetrically around the vessel. Serpentine handles flank the widest and uppermost portion of the vase while twin stylized bird head figures frame the rim. In the center of the vase sits a stylized Viking-like mask or helmet. Symmetrically placed gemstones adorn the vase from the rim to the foot, while contrasting matte lavender, light green, and golden yellow enamels sit just behind the gleaming silver scroll patterns and echo the colors of the gemstones.…

The church was designed in such a beautiful way that people come just to see the decorated chapels. There are two of these chapels - the lower chapel and the upper chapel. The lower chapel is highly decorated, and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. During the reign of King Louis IX, this area of the cathedral was reserved for palace staff. The architecture in this chapel is stunning; the ceiling is painted to appear a starry sky, the walls hold representations of the Apostles, and even the floor holds tombstones of reverends and treasurers of the Sainte-Chapelle. The one negative thing about the lower chapel is that it is quite dark. This is a contrast to the upper chapel. The upper chapel is light and full of color, and is known as the “Highlight of the Monument.” The decorations show art and religion working harmoniously, and there is a sense of holiness in this area because this is the chapel in which the Holy Relics were kept. Although both of these chapels are very beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful thing of all in this cathedral are the stained glass windows. Appearing in dominant colors of blue and red, there are about 600 square meters of these stained glass windows. The art dates back to a long time ago - the twelfth century craftsmanship is ancient, yet so perfect to the cathedral. What is even more stunning about these window panes is that they can be read in arches that go from left to right. In fact, they tell…

The technique the artist used to construct and design the item relied heavily on symmetry. From the start of the back of the neck down to the start of the tail, a long undecorated line interrupted by a horizontal band of inscriptions around the neck appears to divide the sculpture medially. The simple shapes of the head a sphere with two rectangular ears atop it and a cone like neck below. Including a cylindrical body and legs. The legs “that was similar to those found on a throne chair, namely legs terminating in animals’ feet” (Boger, “Guide to Furniture Styles” 5), are usually in the form of chimera, lion, eagles, and swans. The carvings are earthy with leaf patterns and extended curved lines following the over arching “sweeping curves and scrolls” (Boger, “Guide to Furniture Styles” 5) that resembles the work of Duncan Phyfe in America. They are realistically carved sometimes with “medley of and human heads, sphinxes with upraised wings, dolphins, swans, ringed lion’s mask, and the lion monopodium (Boger, “Furniture Past & Present” 364). Today, the additions of wheels are sometimes added to the legs of the couch to give it mobility.…

Teyo Remy was part of a group of young Dutch designers who came to the forefront of the international design scene with works that had a political awareness and also sense of humor. Chest and drawers piece was design in 1991, which was based on twenty drawers which each of those had a story with them. Very first drawer represents a jewelry box that was a gift to the young woman from the father. The entire piece is held together by a furniture mowers strap that represents nature of life. Basically a strap would be a reference of us humans holding on the important things in life that matter to us. The reason I like this is because it connects to me with memories of my past and experiences I went through. To me, each drawer represents a memory in my life that has thought me to make better decisions in the future. I also like this design of art because it is amazes me how Teyo Remy managed to make a design that held twenty drawers together and none of them fell off. The color selections of the drawers are matte and plain colored that you see in your everyday life. This was a good selection because it made the piece more relatable. “You Can’t Lay Down Your Memory”, is a perfect title for this design as it shows the importance of past.…

Located at the entrance of the third floor that was designated as Europe, I chose a three dimensional sculpture that is called the Archangel Saint Michael Vanquishing Satan by Henry High Armstead. This sculpture was started and finished in the year 1852. There was no art work next to the piece I chose but on the other side of the wall that it was on there was a painting called The Virgin and Child with Saints in a Landscape by Alessandro Tiarini. The Virgin and Child with Saints in a Landscape is an oil painting done on a canvas in 1640. This sculpture is a cast statue based on one of the saints. It was created to show the strength of Saints and how they were loyal, and angelic hosts of heaven out of a bronze material that was shaped and carved. The art work was purchased by the…

    St John the Divine

The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is simply breathtaking. From the exterior to the interior of the cathedral, you can find plentiful amounts of highly sophisticated bodies of work. Before laying a foot inside, the massive bronze doors containing forty-eight relief panels depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament catches the eyes of many. Also, many note the exquisite statues and carvings of saints and Jesus all along the Western Front of the Cathedral. Once inside, the enormous pilier-cantonnés stand along the nave aisle, where it erects up into the ceiling. Eventually, the columns meet with one another at four angles, creating a quadripartite vault in the nave ceiling. The stained glass windows that lines the entire cathedral strikes your retina at all different angles as you rotate your body. A little beyond the crossing, the high altar contains a magnificent cross, as well as an iron tomb of the man who founded the cathedral. If you focus the eyes just behind the choir, you will glare at seven stunning radial chapels—each one representing an apostle, a patron, or immigrant. But out of all the marvelous artwork within and outside the chapel, there was one particular window that caught my attention.…

This particular exhibition was the most odd one of them, but it was definitely the most interesting one. The exhibition consisted of the smallest things that helped shape the future of Chicago. The whole room was full of these tiny artifacts that no one would consider to be a part of history. One of these were Nathan F. Leopold Jr.’s eyeglasses, which reminded me of Dr. T.J Eckleburg's eyes in “The Great Gatsby”. The entire room was filled with similar “odd” things, like a marble top table, a cane, and many more with amazing stories behind them. This room stood out to me the most, as it was unlike any other that I have ever seen. The room was lit with these small things that had a significant part in Chicago’s history. The museum had a different approach towards displaying its exhibits, and portraying…

I think cognitive dissonance is extremely common in our lives, whether we realize it or not. Almost every day I can say that I am faced with cognitive dissonance. For example I’m on a diet and I know I should not be eating sweets, but when I come by one, even though I’m telling myself in the moment I shouldn't be doing this, I eat the sweets anyway. Shortly before or after eating it I will try to justify in my mind why I just did that or why it was ok. Something like “oh it was just one; as long as I don't keep doing it I’ll be ok.” Just telling myself this in my head is enough sometimes to continue with my actions even though I know I’m contradicting myself.…

A lot of things can suggest that ‘Othello’ is a racist play but other themes can actually dominate this opinion. At the time where the play was written (1604), the romantic union between black and white usually gets destroyed and hated upon because most people thought this type of relationship was wrong. Moreover, the queen of England at the time was extremely racist so there must have been a strong hatred towards dark skinned people at the time.…
