Tom Wooters, LoJack Executive Vice President and General Counsel, noted that they needed to work to expand their base. Its mission is “to be the preeminent global brand providing aftermarket safety, security and protection products and services for the “connected car.”

Case Overview

The case study covers how LoJack Corporation started out as a global leader in development and delivery of tracking and recovering stolen vehicles. However, the company was faced with challenges as they were closely aligned with the volatile auto industry. LoJack undertook a new venture strategy that eventually produced four new units.

This case starts with a description of the tracking and recovery system and how it works. Unlike
Global Positioning Systems (GPS), the LoJack technologies work differently in the way they penetrate buildings and containers to find stolen mobile assets that are hidden from view. This differentiated LoJack from other competitors in the industry.

In the recent years, many companies that were developing and marketing wireless communication product with vehicle security applications expanded, and LoJack faced direct competition from many of these companies. However, no competitor managed to integrate a recovery program with law enforcement
