Paragon & Argentina Suite
In the two cases, both Paragon and Argentina Suites face some problems and challenges which are needed to solve urgently. Except the differences, although they are running totally different businesses, there still some similarities exist such as competition environment, financial problems and people management.
These two businesses are facing the serious competition, and that is one of reasons they are forced to reform their businesses. However, since their different situations, their competitors are different. The main competitor of Paragon is the company that formed by the “previous vice-president of marketing at NIS, two vice-presidents of Paragon and the entire sales force with important technical and support staff.” However, the main competitors of Argentina Suites are nearby luxurious hotels and because Argentina Suites is not entering the international market, most competitors are in Argentina.
In addition, financial problems are also needed to be concerned. According to the income statements of both businesses, “Paragon was faced the loss decline to 207 thousands of dollars in 1996 while the income statement of Argentina Suites was making profits in last five years which offered by Monica.” However, Max is uncertain its accuracy because the energy costs had doubled since 1992 and Monica explained,” in the past we secretly tapped into external power lines so that most of our energy was received without the accompanying cost.”
Finally, the people management is a problem to these two businesses. For paragon, the rest of employees would like to rebuild Paragon together with Keith and the board of NEL is extremely supportive, “whatever you believe you need” is the attitude they showed. On the contrary, employees in Argentina Suites are not cooperative. People in this business are all relatives of Abraham.
