Parking Brake Procedure
The lever at your left side that is in the way if you try to get in on the driver’s side is the parking brake. When it is pulled all the way back toward the seat is when it functions as a parking brake. The parking brake or emergency brake is just that, a brake to be pulled anytime you are parked or in an emergency when you have to stop the car and the other methods of braking aren't working. The parking brake lever functions in three ways. First when it is pulled back as far as it will go (about in the 12:00 position) it functions as a brake. When it is pushed about half way forward (about the 1:30 position) it is in neutral (referring to the transmission or gear neutral) which means the car can roll even if the engine is not running.
