Part 2: Rhino Hunt
Part 2: Rhino Hunt The black rhinoceros are a critically endangered species, with as few as 5,000 left in the world (Adler, 2015), and as such are illegal to hunt. However, there are organizations that sell hunting permits to kill these animals for sums as much as $350,000. Clubs that issue the tags claim the money from the auctions fund conservation efforts to protect black rhinoceros. Furthermore, advocates explain that post-reproductive male black rhinoceros are known to be aggressive, sometimes even killing other members of their species. In the words of a club director, “By removing counterproductive individuals from a herd, rhino populations can actually grow” (Howard, 2013). On the other hand, critics argue that to conserve this endangered

Most people you'd ask wouldn't understand the strange desire for rhino horn, and even more probably don't know that there is a market for such an item. This is in large part due to the fact that it's not something you'd expect to be valuable like ivory or gold. It's just a dirty old animal horn, but it's still quite valuable being worth "more than $4,500 a pound." In Bryan Christy's article, "Special Investigation: Inside the Deadly Rhino Horn Trade" he discusses the poaching of rhino for their horn, how this is being fought, and some of the people who wish to legalize the trade. It is Christy's use of rhetoric through the arrangement of his article and overall writing style, as well as an appeal to the readers emotions that stems from his…

In Jerry Toner’s book The Day Commodus Killed a Rhino: Understanding the Roman Games, the reader is introduced into the violent, blood thirsty society that is the Roman Empire. In the prologue to the book, Toner writes “One modern writer described these ‘bloodthirsty human holocausts’ as ‘by far the nastiest blood-sport ever invented. He claimed that ‘the two most quantitatively destructive institutions in History are Nazism and the Roman Gladiators’.” The Roman Empire, as a whole, was a violent society. Their violence though, was something that was celebrated and embodied by Romans. In Jerry Toner’s book The Day Commodus Killed a Rhino: Understanding the Roman Games, it becomes evident through the Romans “bread and circus” society, that being…

Sport or trophy-hunting is defined as, “People willing to pay big money to kill animals, the thinking goes, the private sector has a strong motivation to make sure at least some of them remain alive.” The article also declared, “...as long as hunters are willing to travel to challenging and remote places, the industry provides conservation…” (Dymoke). This evidence helps prove that the government wants to capitalize the fact that they have a unique animal, however they don’t want to hunt it, and others, to extinction. Another article states, “As hard as it is to accept that killing animals can be integral to their survival, the fact remains: without trophy-hunting, many of Africa’s iconic species would be worse off,” to elaborate further, it states, “South Africa’s white rhinos numbered only 1,800 when trophy-hunting started there in 1968. Today there are almost 20,000” (Knight).…

The problem with offering money is that some ranchers have accepted it, but used that money to pay hunters to kill as many wolves as possible (nytimes, 2011). Ranchers do not believe that it is necessary to keep wolf populations as high as they are (nytimes, 2011). The fourth article discussed how the court was going to uphold Congress’s act to remove the wolf from the endangered species list (latimes, 2012). The main viewpoints are the agencies that support Congress’s decision to take the wolf off the list versus the environmental groups (latimes, 2012). The environmental groups were arguing that the rider that Congress issued in 2011 was a violation of the separation of powers doctrine (latimes, 2012). However, it was revealed that the separation of powers doctrine was not violated and that states should still get the rights to determine wolf population numbers (latimes, 2012). In the fifth article, state governments versus environmental groups are the main viewpoints (nytimes, 2013). State governments believe that they are the most competent to make decisions about the future of wolves (nytimes, 2013). Reports indicate that wolf populations remain…

Iconic African species are declining at a startling speed because of unsustainable hunting. Consider the African lion for example. Their numbers have reduced from approximately 450,000 in the 1940s to 200,000. Furthermore Oxford University research shows that by 2035, the number of lions will likely be decreased by a further 50%. Trophy hunters contribute to this decline by killing around 105,000 animals every year. the original intention of trophy hunters was to control healthy populations of individual species. Numbers were managed under the guise of culling. However, the trophy hunters never stopped hunting even when healthy numbers were achieved, and the trophy hunting has become a status symbol for the wealthy, especially in Asia.…

As human populations continue to grow, there is a greater requirement of more land for everything from infrastructure to waste deposit which can infringe on the natural habitats of countless species. Kolbert writes about the Sumatran Rhino whose habitat originally was around the foothills of the Himalayas but due to a high rate of deforestation their habitat became fragmented and was reduced to a few hundred. This grave fragmentation of the species made it incredibly difficult to breed and recover their numbers which led to rhinoceros captive breeding programs. The deforestation that caused such drastic habitat loss was specifically for fulfilling human needs regardless of the other species that their actions affected. Despite the plight that these rhinos had to deal with, humans still found a way to benefit as forty of the endangered rhinos were sent to zoos in the United States.…

Africa is in the middle of a growing epidemic elephant slaughter. This growing slaughter began in 2002 and is currently happening till this day. Conservation groups share that elephant poachers are killing tens of thousands of elephants every year, which is more than at any time since the “Ivory Wars” has started. Recently in Garamba National park, Paul Onyango says that he has never seen anything like this before. 22 elephants were killed with a single shot to the head, including several young elephants as well. The reasons for the slaughtering is that poachers sell the animals tusks which have ivory in them.…

There was a time when man killed animals for food, clothing and shelter. Now people kill animals for trophies and to stroke their egos for bragging rights. “Every year, tens of thousands of wild animals, representing hundreds of different species, are killed by American trophy hunters in foreign countries” (“Trophy Hunting”). “The heads, hides, tusks, and other body parts of most of these animals are legally imported to the United States by the hunters” (“Trophy Hunting”). “Many animals imported as trophies are members of species protected under the Endangered Species Act, such as leopards and African elephants” (“Trophy Hunting”). These facts provide evidence that…

Public debates about trophy hunting often centers on the question of the morality of recreational hunting or the extent to which the money paid by sportsmen seeking a trophy animal provides a conservation benefit to the overall population of game animals and the rural economies where the game is hunted. Bears, cougars, deer, foxes, and other animals who are chased, trapped, and even killed by dogs during hunts are not the only ones to suffer from this variant of the “sport.” Hunting for fun destroys property and injure or kill horses, cows, dogs, cats, hikers, and other hunters (Trophy…

Taxidermist’s careers thrive on dead animals, and there are plenty of customers who want to remember the hunting experience by bringing home a dead animal. Of course, the unique artists present the dead animal with fake eyes and replace the intestines with stuffing, so that the hunters may admire their truly well-deserved trophy. However, the need for trophies impact populations of species immensely. For example, according to Philippe Bouché, author of “Embargo on Lion Hunting,” the lion population of West Africa has noticeably decreased due to factors including trophy hunting. Generally, people who collect trophies want the prettiest and biggest ones they can get. Not surprisingly, the best trophies among lions are the males with sizeable manes. Although the male lions may look regal and powerful in one’s living room, it is upsetting the balance in the species population. For instance, by targeting males it decreases the ratio of male to female lions and “[t]he dynamics of lion populations may be particularly sensitive to the removal of pride males because of social disruption and potential infanticide by incoming males” (“Embargo on Lion Hunting”). In other words, if hunters continue to kill pride males, then other males move in who kill any cubs that do not belong to them. Plus, if this morbid cycle were to continue, then the chances of the young cubs reaching maturity…
