Passchendaele Movie Analysis
The main theme of the movie, Passchendaele, was the first World War and how it affected the lives of people on and away from the battlefield. The movie follows the lives Canadians living during the war, particularly Michael Dunne, David Mann, and Sarah Mann; a sargeant, private, and nurse respectively. At the beginning of the movie, Michael was fighting in the World War against a squad of German soldiers in a destroyed city, and got injured by an artillery shot after killing the soldiers. He later woke up in a hospital back in Canada, injured and psychologically scarred and diagnosed with neurasthenia. The nurse, Sarah, tended to Michael as he tried to flirt with her. Micheal later recovered from his injuries, but was not allowed to re-enlist in the army, choosing instead to stay at a recruitment office. …show more content…
However, when David tried to enlist, he was rejected by Michael due to his asthma condition. Still convinced to join the army, David angrily walked away. Later, Michael found David at a bar, and dropped him off at his house to his sister, Susan.
After flirting with her again. Michael discovered that Susan’s father died in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Susan and Michael then formed a romantic relationship over a course of a few months. Unknown to Sarah and Michael, David had secretly asked Cassie’s father to give him a note of recommendation to the enlistment office. However, David thought that the war would be a romantic travel instead of the gruesome tragedy that would await him. Susan and Michael also decided to travel to Europe to partake in the war, Sarah as a field nurse and Michael as a soldier to keep David
