Through all of the hardship and sacrifices George from ‘Of Mice and Men’ and Vicomtesse Antonia from ‘Suitcase Lady’ went through in their lives, their unknowingly unachievable dreams were what kept them from giving up on themselves. Dreams are wonderful things and are different for everyone, they strive people to reach them, but sometimes dreams are so far from reality, that they will stay dreams and not become a reality. The characters from both of these stories believe that their dreams will one day come true, which stimulates the reader to feel sorry for them, because they know that these dreams are impossible to achieve in the reality of George and Vicomtesse.
Poverty affects very many people, it leads to making sacrifices to survive and also to helping the people you care about survive as well. George sacrificed having an easier, less stressful life when he chose to take care of his childhood friend, Lennie. This sacrifice meant sharing food and work, and also having to take care of his friend, which was a full-time job. George included Lennie in his dreams of owning a house, farm and rabbits. He thought they could both work and but it together. They worked hard and tried their best only for their dreams. This is the pathos that every reader feels for George, his hard work to achieve his dreams would never pay off, yet unfortunately, he is not aware of this fact. Vicomtesse Antonia sacrificed raising her son due to her inability to care for him…the result of poverty. She had to give him up, for his own good. She took her emotions and turned them into music, hoping some day it would get her somewhere. In spite of everything she had to go through, Vicomtesse is still a very loving woman. She felt as though it is her duty to take care of others around her. This evokes the reader to feel sorry for her, because of the fact that she has gone through so much, yet
