Patrician's Role In Ancient Rome

A patrician’s role in Ancient Rome was one of power. They were considered the noblemen of Rome, and made up what we would now refer to as “aristocracy”. Some used their power for the welfare of the Roman Empire. For example, many advised the first kings of Rome and shared valuable advice to the military and economy as a whole. However, others used their power (which was not earned, rather gifted to them by being born into wealthy families) to attempt to control most of Rome. This is shown by the fact that after the removal of the kings, patricians scrambled to gain control of the foundations of Rome like religion and government. ("patrician | ancient Rome", n.d.) Daily activities would include shopping, visiting gardens, going to the seaside, or going to the baths. The baths were large, swimming pool-like structures that the Romans would visit regularly. Ancient Roman houses had limited water supplies causing the baths to become one of the only places where Romans could clean themselves. As well as this, the baths were used as gathering places for Romans where they could relax with their friends and acquaintances. Many Romans such as Petronius – a courtier in the first century AD – enjoyed the baths. Petronius’ experience in the baths is accounted in one of his essays. “We quickly undressed, went into the hot baths and after working up a sweat, passed on to the cold bath. … His skin was glistening all over with perfumed oil. He was being rubbed down, not with ordinary linen, but with cloths of the purest and softest wool. he was then wrapped in a blazing scarlet robe, hoisted into a litter, and trundled off.” Even though the patricians experienced luxury at almost every minute, the males also had to endure physical training to keep their reputation of being physically fit.
