26, 2001. The law was passed by a unanimously vote by the Senate 98 to1 and 357 to 66 in the House of Representatives. The Patriot Act protects all U.S. citizens from terrorist attacks by helping the Department of Justice detect or prevent terrorist attacks from happening. The patriot act plays a role by protecting, preserving the lives, and liberties of U.S. citizens. After 9/11 public safety has been a main concern for the U.S. government. In the article “ The USA Patriot Act: Preserving Life and Liberty” it confirms how the Patriot Act has four significant ways on how it improves our counter terrorism efforts.
First, it allows the National Security Agency to investigate and conduct surveillance against more crimes of terror without tipping off terrorists. Secondly, it updated the law to reflect new technologies and new threats. By updating current technology, the government can obtain a search warrant from anywhere the terrorist activities are occurring. Thirdly, the Patriot Act gathers information and removes legal barriers that prevent national defense and law enforcement from talking and coordinating their work to protect the American people.
Fourthly, the act increased the penalties for those who commit terrorist crimes. It also prohibits the harboring of terrorists. The government is about helping the people of the nation not harming the nation. If the Patriot Act was never signed in to law who knows how many terrorist attacks could have come after 9/11. The Patriot Act was put into law to keep Americans safe. The Patriot act lets the National Security Agency to access Americans personal emails and telephone calls to track terrorist activities. After Edward Snowden made the decision in 2013 to leak to the media classified information from the National Security Agency. It caused a lot of controversies and leading some Americans to oppose the Patriot Act. Many people do not agree with the government hacking into their personal devices.
That is why so many Americans oppose the Patriot Act. In the article “ With or Without the Patriot Act, Here’s How the NSA Can Still Spy on Americans” by Jason M. Breslow tells how the government can still access private information without the Patriot Act. In 2008, congress passed an amendment called FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) amendment. The amendment states that the government has authority to access popular Internet sites and collect communications of users. The amendment is geared towards non-citizens of the U.S., but the program can pick up communications between citizens and non-citizens living the U.S. In the article “Patriot Act Pros and Cons,” it states that the Patriot Act has improved the nation. The Patriot Act supports victims in terrorist attacks. The act issues new funding for families of victims of terrorist attacks. It helps them to recover from the damage the terrorist attack has put on their families. The Act has improved protection by giving law enforcement the tools they need to protect against terrorist. Since the Patriot Act has been signed into law it has resulted in to nearly 400 convictions of terrorist-related
activities. Congress vowed to do everything within the constitution to make sure the United States would never go under a terrorist attack again. By Renewing the Patriot Act, the congress would be sticking to that vow and protecting the innocent citizens of America. The Patriot Act is all about the safety for the nation and in America public safety is the number one concern.
