patternicity
The human mind works in miraculous ways. Peoples minds are naturally attracted to patterns, whether it be for religious beliefs or even conspiracy, it truly is our way of life. As productive humans in today’s world we have thousands of occurrences daily, and from those occurrences we subconsciously pick and choose which ones we learn from. And from those occurrences that we have learned from we develop patterns. According to the article “Patternicity: Finding Meaningful Patterns in Meaningless Noice”, written by Michael Shermer patternicity is exactly that, finding meaning in meaningless noise. There are two different types errors associated with patternicity according to Michael Shermer, a type 1 error and a type 2 error. “A type 1 error is a false positive, or believing something is real when it is not. A type 2 error, or false negative is not believing a pattern is real when it is. Patternicity occurs whenever the cost of making a type 1 error is less than making a type 2 error.” The best example of patternicity that I have found is in Michael Shermer’s article, “Meaningful Patterns in Meaningless Noise”, in which he states, “For example, believing that the rustle in the grass is a dangerous predator when it is only the wind does not cost much, but believing that a dangerous predator is the wind may cost an animal its life.” As an avid outdoorsman I think I relate to this example the most, in fact I have had an experience that seems like it may be the epitome of this example. My friends and I decided to take a hike up to the top of a mountain, above an oasis a few miles away from my friend’s house. On our way back down the mountain we decided to take a shortcut through the oasis when we heard something that we thought could be a bobcat. We all were pretty freighted, and quickly took cover. But when a couple of my braver friends, not including me, decided to grab blunt objects and get a closer look, it turned out to be just a few ground squirrels moving

An individual can become fearful of something unusual that may come into mind. In the essay “Dumpster Diving,” Lars Eighner states, “But my strongest reservation about going through individual garbage cans is that this seems to me a very personal kind of invasion to which I would be object if I were a householder” (723). Lars worried when the thought crossed his mind of what could possibly happen to him if he were to go through an individual garbage can. When anyone’s safety is in danger, we all have the instinct to not do anything that does not include our own personal safety. In the essay “Thirty Eight Who Saw Murder Didn’t Call the Police,” Martin Gansberg tells the reader, “A husband and wife both said; Frankly we were afraid” (122). The couple has shown apathy towards the situation because they did not want themselves to get hurt by helping out somebody else.…

    1. Memory, symbol and pattern affect the reading of literature by separating the professional reader from the rest of the crowd. Memory of what happened allows you to enjoy later scenes of a book of a movie, yet this does not necessarily improve the experience of popular entertainment. When reading you have to assume everything is a symbol until proven otherwise. Its good to think of things as existing as themselves while simultaneously also representing something else. Patterns are everywhere. While reading you take in detail yet also look at how the details have an underling pattern This means that you have to distance yourself from the story and look beyond the basic story.…

One instance is at Jack’s feast, when the boys start to do their hunting dance. They chant, “Kill the Beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” (152), because they are trying to have some false confidence over the beast. Meanwhile, a thunderstorm commences, so panic erupts amongst the boys, and “out of the terror [rises] another desire, thick, urgent, blind” (152). The boys want to kill something using their false confidence and fear, and Simon had just appeared from the jungle. Due to the veil of fear, the children’s judgement is altered, and they mistake Simon for the beast and quickly attack him. After the boys pause for a minute, “they [can] see how small a beast [Simon] was; and already [his] blood [is] staining the sand” (153). They finally realize that they are killing Simon, not a beast. This revelation could have come earlier if they were not blinded by fear. They could have saved the life of an innocent human if they waited and reasoned instead of…
