Through out the novel, A Separate Peace, by Jonathan Knowles, a conflict between innocence and guilt is revealed. Gene Forrest, the narrator of the story returns to his school Devon, thirty years later to face the haunting memories of a past love-hate relationship. Though many people would argue the fact that Gene's character was not redeemed by the end of the novel, I on the other hand personally hold the opinion that Gene's character was.…

Are all people born with some unknown evil inside them or does the world just slowly corrupt the innocent as they mature. In the novel A Separate Peace, the author, John Knowles uses a dual perspective on certain characters and events throughout the novel to help support the books main theme; the loss of innocence through growth into maturity. One example of this technique is seen through the comparison between the two rivers running on the Devon campus. "The Devon River represents goodness, beauty, even purity" (Mellard 58) while the "Naguamsett, associated with winter, suggests everything contrary to the spirit of Devon: it is ‘ugly, saline, fringed with marsh, ' and it is ‘governed by unimaginable factors '" (Mellard 58). The dualistic symbolism of the two rivers is seen through the contrasting personalities of Gene and Finny, the struggle between war and peace and the conflicting seasons of summer and winter which help to support the theme involving the timeless battle of good versus evil which. The biggest counterpoint in the novel, Finny and Gene, are personality-wise, equal to the two rivers.…

Maturity: One of the most prominent and outspoken theme in A Separate Peace is the struggle the young adult population must endure during their race to maturity from childhood. The reader can tell that it is difficult for the main characters to cope with the war, especially Finny, who refuses to admit the war actually exists, although deep down his true belief is that the war is more dangerous than ever. To be frank, the boys in the novel seem to have grown up in a very sheltered environment, and their maturity level is low to begin with. However, the constant pressure to become a man, join the army, and contribute to one’s country causes the race to maturity to be a key theme.…

Have you gone through an experience where you lose your innocence. In the novels Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the main characters of both novels suffer a fall from innocence. Ralph from Lord of the Flies suffers his fall from innocence when he takes part in the brutal, gruesome death of Simon. However, Gene, in A Separate Peace, suffers the greatest fall from innocence. Gene subconsciously cripples his best friend Phineas, which in the end, leads to the death of his friend. Although both characters are at fault for the death of a friend, Gene’s case is far worse because his actions are the result of jealousy, frustration, and anger.…

Peaceful resistance, historically referred to as “civil disobedience”, is a long-standing American tradition practiced throughout history in times of public turmoil and political fracas. From the opening stages of the United States, to the tergiversate of the civil right movement, civil disobedience continues to take its place in the moral actions of the American people. The right to defend one's unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is an ideal that was both important to the Founding Fathers, and to Americans today. Influential leaders of the world such as John Dickinson, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King Jr., along with many others, promoted and demonstrated the benefits and positive affects of peaceful protesting to achieve their goals, as well as establish a legacy and a path for revolution. Likewise, a peaceful…

When I have homework I feel pretty normal because we almost always have homework. Sometimes we have a ton of homework in other subjects and then we have math homework. On these nights I feel like I don't have enough time to do it because I have other after school activities that might take away three hours at most on some nights. Even though I have a lot of homework some nights I finish it but I'm usually up really late so the next day I’m really tired. This makes me not pay as much attention in some classes that I would normally pay a lot of attention in. It’s not so much the written homework that gets me so much. It’s the test that we have crammed in every week. So, in summary, the homework isn't usually to bad but when it gets staked up…
