In his essay, “Women’s Brains”, Stephen Jay Gould discusses the incorrect and often biased research of women’s intelligence based on data written by craniometrometer Paul Broca. While Gould does not come out and blatantly say it, I believe that he is using this essay to appeal to a more open minded individual who will take the data presented to them, and formulate their own opinions and ideas based off of what Gould has projected. I believe that Gould is actually a very liberal-minded person, and is uses this essay to subtly recognize the change and contrast between the female standings in the 1800s, and the female standings in present day.…
In this article it is discussed how men are seen a certain way and women are seen another. Men are supposed to be big, strong, and outspoken. Women are to be viewed as quieter and much more successful. Supposedly due to their ability to be quiet in class and learn better. Brooks states in the article, “From the first days of schools, girls outperform boys.…
Judith Sargent Murray’s On the Equality of the Sexes was written to give women the education they deserved and needed. Murray felt that women were capable of doing more than housework; she believed they could do the same as men if not to be better than them. To prove that women and men were equal and should be getting the same education she questions, “May not the intellectual powers be ranged under these four heads- imagination, reason, memory, and judgment?” As the Enlighten women she gave evidence to everything she said or wrote. She proved that men and women had the same capability to imagine. She wrote “but as proofs of a creative faculty, of a lively imagination”, Murray’s evidence that women had an imagination was gossiping. If women didn’t have an imagination how would they be able to come up with such interesting rumors and gossip? Murray goes on to say, “Are we deficient in reason? We can only reason from what we know, and if an opportunity of acquiring knowledge hath been denied us, the inferiority of our sex cannot fairly be deduced from thence.” She is saying if they teach women physics, psychology, and other subjects besides the basics they can prove they have the same power of reasoning as men. She then proves that women also have the power of memory, because women memorize stories and share them with others. Murray wrote, “Female would become discreet, their judgment would be…
Why Men Fail is an article that I disagree with completely. With my eleven years of schooling I have seen all kinds of stupid and all kinds of smart. I believe that men and woman are both equally smart at somethings and they are also smarter at different subjects. I think that gender plays no role in schools and how people perform. This article sounds like it is written as merely an advertisement not something that we should pay attention. One section of the article states qoute “Millions of men are collecting disability.” There are also millions of women collecting disability. Also I don't see why some of these things are a problem. When this article states twelve out of fifteen fastest-growing professions are dominated by women it states this…
In describing all of the current issues the modern day world has pertaining to women, it shows that for every step forward comes right back. Women still suffer wage difference, put up with racism, and above all encounter sexism far worse than men ever have. The efforts of society to, as Aude Lorde would say, control and…
A college girl tells Friedan “If your husband is going to be an organization man, you can’t be too educated. The wife is awfully important for the husband’s career. You can’t be too interested in art, or something like that.” (Friedan, 177). This college student is emphasizing that women should not further their education and not be smarter than men. She also feels that women are alienated since most careers require higher education and the real careers are reserved and already taken by men. Moreover, she expresses that women should not get in a man’s way of success because society believes men are supposed to be more intelligent in everything besides being a housewife that is why she should not pursue a career that requires high education. This could break the abnormal image of women challenging men in their careers. However, if women want real careers and rise greater than a housewife, risk is…
Sandra Upson and Lauren F. Friedman have interesting and valid theory as to why there’s a lack in female geniuses. Their claims seem reasonable and are backed by credible sources. However, what determines the “genius” status? Many great women are acknowledge for their abilities and accomplishments. Their revolve idea and thesis around the fact that women tend to care more about married life, taking care of their families, and society that support this custom. These concerns often outrank the need to work and obstruct their path of pursuing eminence, according to studies by mentioned psychologists. I do agree that in the past, or perhaps even in this day, women were discriminated against in many ways, whether that be education, or career opportunities…
In “Mind over Muscle”, David Brooks supports the claim that education has been over feminized. Brooks tells that this world used to be a man’s world until the information age came along, in which education is the “gateway to success. And that means this is turning into a woman’s world, because women are better students than men” (Brooks 410). Brooks asks several questions trying to figure out ways for boys to succeed. He suggests that we need to take a look at the “innate differences between sexes” (Brooks 411). Brooks tells that the problem with females outdoing males could very well be from society but he also suggest that it could be from the basic differences between males…
Women have come a long way over the history of this earth. They have come through suffrage, voilence, and discrimination. The history of women has been a continual battle. Men has always been superior and had better rights and career opportunities. To be a wife and a mother was considered a woman’s most important jobs. As years have preceded women have won the right to vote and improved their educational and job opportunities. Cover the years as women began to advance in the politics, rights, career, business ownership and a variety of different things there was still a group of women who didn’t advance until after that Black…
In the past 32 years women have advanced farther than in any previous generation yet we still do not…
A women’s life is centered around her reproductiveness and ability to be a caregiver. For example, there are significantly more women in elementary education than there are in higher education. In contrast, since men are unable to bare children, they have time after time been responsible for providing the necessary for the his family, while “their” women stay at home carrying over the children, maintaining a clean household, and being responsible for all their needs. Since men tend to be stronger and bigger than women, this ultimately has lead society to believe that men are more dominant than women; hence, women are often portrayed as weak and vulnerable. These biological characteristics translate to cultural myths about what a man or women can or cannot do; therefore, discriminating gender. This male dominance and privilege has contributed to the notion that men hold more power roles than women. In addition, being naturally more violent and at higher rates than women has contributed to the myth that men are better leaders. Today, men are in charge of significantly close to most if not all of the largest corporations. If a women happens to be part of the leading group of one of these corporations, it leads to question whether she has the position in order to increase diversity or because she deserves and worked hard to be there. It is is unfortunate that society promotes that women are simply not good enough for the…
Gender equality in education is a recent achievement in America, women now have access to the same amount of classes and programs as men, if not more. Women are no longer suggested to take family finance classes or interior design as they were at one point in time. Starting with Title IX, a bill that states: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance, women’s role in education has only increased since the passing of this bill. Education for women has come a long way. Before Title IX, women have had a struggle for equal rights in education, but now, and over the past few decades, education rights are essentially equal among men and women, if not higher for women.…
In Rich’s essay “What Does a Women Need to Know?” she argues that women have been demoralized throughout time. Rich says “when we think of what an independent women’s college might be: a college dedicated both to teaching women what women need to know and, by the same token, to changing the landscape of knowledge itself.” (Rich 45) This means that she believes that women should be taught the skills that they will need to succeed in life as a wife and as a “self conscious, self-defining human being.” (Rich 45) She then gives examples of her life experiences and how her life experiences with men trying to force her to think and see things one way, and how she struggled to see things from a different perspective, “through the eyes of an outsider.” (Rich 46) She ends her speech by talking about how these women have to change the ways of the past and they have to step into the now and become educated of the past and present. She ends the speech with, “Get all of the knowledge and skill that you can in whatever professions you enter; but remember that most of your education must be self-education, in learning the things that women need to know and in calling up the voices we need to hear within…
The idea that stuck with me is that a college institution would attempt to influence a female student away from their desired path for a more traditional one suited for women. The idea that men are better at science and math is outrageous. It reminds me of the movie that is out right now called Hidden Figures. This is the movie about African-American women who helped send American men into space. These women not only broke the barrier when it came to gender, but also race.…
Stereotypes commonly exist in genders, men generally perceive women as inferior in the workplace. According to Sheryl Sandberg, women reach less for opportunities, than men do. Men overpower and dominate in the workplace, they are more likely to get promoted because they are confident and always competing to be the first. Sandberg claims women need to get more involved, they need to ‘sit at the table’ not on the sidelines, “women systematically underestimate their own abilities”…
