I am investigating factors that affect heat loss from a body. All athletes become hot during exercise and need to be aware of how fast their bodies will cool down after the exercise. In extreme conditions the continued drop of body temperature may cause hypothermia. Hypothermia is caused by the core body temperature dropping below 35degrees. This is why it is important to how quickly the body loses heat and what affects it.
Heat is lost from the body in 3 different ways conduction, convection and radiation. Conduction is when heat travels through solids. Hot atoms vibrate and their energy is passed on to neighbouring atoms which vibrate and become hot.
Convection is the process by which heat is transferred by warm liquids or gases. Warm air is less dense than cold air because particles have more energy so they spread further. So the hot air rises and transfers heat and the cold air replaces it
Radiation: all objects give out and take in thermal radiation which is also called infrared radiation. The hotter an object is the more infrared radiation it emits. It travels in waves not involving any particles, which is why the heat from the sun can travel through space.
If the body gets to hot or cold then it uses homeostasis. Homeostasis is when the body try’s to maintain the balance of temperature in your body. It can do this in different ways. For example if you are to cold it will make you shiver by making your muscles contract to warm your body up or raise the hairs on your body for insulation. And if you’re to hot it can make you sweat which makes water go out onto your skin and it evaporates with energy.
There are a lot of factors that affect the rate of heat loss they are:
Surface are to volume ratio: as you increase the surface are to volume ratio the rate of heat loss will be greater. When a body has a relatively large surface area compared to its volume heat can be lost to the environment quickly.
