College education in the form that it exists today in America doesn’t serve the purpose of elevating the most deserving. It has become a fool of systematic economic oppression. Therefore, for this very reason a college degree could be seen as a means to an end.…
If you don’t go to college you are heading down the wrong path because America is run on technology and if there are no people to help run and fix the technology then how can America survive? How can America stay in race in becoming the most powerful country of the world if there is no one there to help out? Also if you don’t go to college you don’t get a good job and if you don’t have a good job or career then you will most likely have money problems. If you don’t get the learning and skills you need you won’t know what to do on the job you want to have in life therefore they won’t hire you because you won’t know what to do. If you don’t have the job you don’t have a lot of money and then you will be in poverty and some people find alternate ways but those ways can also put you in jail. So it is way better to go to college and graduate and get a career or a good job to be secure in all that you…
Larry Cuban, a former social studies high school teacher, superintendent, manages to compress the mantra that has been repeated for several of years with his article entitled, “Why Everyone Shouldn’t Go To College”. He accomplishes this by giving us countless of interesting facts about the reality of college and life. He argues that the annual college tuition seems to be extremely expensive, that may not worth the amount of money you’re paying. In addition, he makes note that college graduates working at manufacturing places that don’t need college diplomas, in order to complete their job. Furthermore, he makes clear that one might be a high school dropout or graduate of high school and can still be highly…
The culture of society has revolved around the idea that education is the key to every person’s success. However, people have the stigma that one who earns an education equivalent to that of a high school graduate, is not as intelligent as a college graduate. Society needs to stop valuing education based on the level of education one has obtained, but rather by how one can incorporate what he or she has learned with the demands of the general public.…
Society fails to include the extremities of life and its circumstances when considering a person’s value. Not having the opportunity to continue school is very common. One example is Rose’s mother who had to “quit school in the seventh grade to help raise her brothers and sisters” (98). Another example is of my parents who were born in another country and who did not have the level of formal education past high school. This made it very challenging for my parents to go to school because they had many varied responsibilities, including going to work to the family. Another example is my friend Catherine who gave birth to her first newborn, who also watched her father pass away two months before her son’s birthdate. These life-changing events influenced her inability to afford time and money for college. All these people are deemed less intelligent because they do not fit the given model for society to judge them…
Society, or “Mother Culture” as referred to by Ishmael, has countless ways of holding us back. “Mother Culture, whose voice has been in your ear since the day of your birth, has given you an explanation of how things came to be this way. You know it well; everyone in your culture knows it well…” (Page 40) In this sentence and the sentences after, Ishmael explains how none of us are really taught how we should act, we just pick up on it by watching our surroundings. Ideas about needing to go to college and get a great job are ideas that come from society. You don’t need to go to college to be successful but society makes us feel like in order to be successful, we need to go to college. We’ve been trained to believe that having years of school under our belts or a degree to hang on the wall will make us successful and in turn, make us happy. As humans, being at the top of the ecosystem and being free should make us happy in its own. But being free isn’t always what we think it is.…
Today, many students like myself all over the America have walked down the hectic aisles of high school and have sat in some of the largest lecture halls in college. As kids, we were somewhat taught that going to school and getting an education would be the key to our success and thought that if we didn’t fulfill these expectations, we would end up homeless and live a terrible life. For so many years during my educational career this was the mentality that I believed in. Although this may be over exaggerated, I believe that this may hold some truth to the many college students all over the world. It is almost like we volunteer to go into debt and deal with all the stress that a college education brings us because we feel like it will get us…
Just because I have friends that quit school because they were lazy and due to work doesn’t mean that I too will quit. We all have our own Universal laws and our goals to achieve. I discovered that you think first before the actions come later through the point that Kant made. You also will learn to do good first to anyone and they will do the same thing. If you respect and do the right things, then people will also respect you and know that you are a well human being. This also goes for when thinking first and actions come later. The way we think is also part of who we are. If you think smart and positive things like staying in school and not quitting, a reward which will be a good education and will earn a lot of money. Mill points out about how a plant needs water, fertilizer, and sun to survive, but if any of those 3 are added too much, then the plant will die. This made me realize that with the people we hang out with are the way we are. I realized that I was hanging out with the wrong people and I was starting to think about dropping and quit school. By quitting school, we then will have trouble finding a job and lack of education. My chart analysis grand totals came out to be all negative. This means that I should not quit school and to continue on getting an education and…
Times have changed in today’s world or this is at least what most adults tell me about my generation. They think my generation gets treated differently and the world is more lenient towards us. The day I turned sixteen years old my parents told me to get a job not because I should learn the value of a dollar but to learn a strong work ethic. They taught me to believe that having a strong worth ethic will set me up for success in my future. Charlotte Kent, professor of English at Mercy College believes in strict syllabus with high expectations to shape her students and help prepare them for their future outside the classroom.…
Even those who wish to work face challenges. Society has reared even friends and family to belittle those who attempt to follow their inspiration. Those with jobs considered undignified or improper are seen as inferior in hierarchical fashion. Following the arts is considered a waste of time, whereas following science or math is considered spectacular. Careers such as lawyers, doctors, and engineers, are highly valued for the money they produce and the education they require. This is inherently harmful, not only to those who wish to follow other professions, but also due to it providing wealth inequality. Rather than health and happiness, money becomes the priority. Moreover, someone who is unable to acquire a higher education might not be seen as fit for most jobs. It is a vicious cycle, where people need degrees to land jobs deemed decent, need money to attain said education, and need education to obtain the…
Since the beginning of our education we are taught that we have to go to college to be successful. However it now has become a debate whether it is actually beneficial or non beneficial on applying to college. Such as a big percentage of students don't become successful after college and just end up in debt. Such as a majority of students think that a high school education is just enough for them to get by. This puts a lot of pressure on students to be competitive and continually having to be doing their best trying to be the ideal student. This gives another reason for students not going to college, as they feel they do not portray the idealistic student who meets the rigorous needs.…
It is difficult to attain the idyllic situation that “education would provide everyone with an equal chance to pursue wealth” (Spring, 2012, p. 57). Many social, economic, and political barriers exist to attaining this ideal objective. Joel Spring, author of the book Education and…
I agree with this quote because I believe it is true, college does not guarantee happiness but it does guarantee a chunk of money they take. Most Americans agree with society norms that college is always going to get you to a better place with a happier life. A quote from Lawrence B. Shlack states” Not more than 20 percent of careers in the work world of tomorrow will require a four a four year degree” which shocks me knowing that almost every person I know plans to go to college when jobs are soon not required a four year degree. In a letter written by Angel B. Perez, he talks about how if you want a successful you need to learn to fail. With this in mind when he states” Failure can’t be taught in a classroom” worries me about the people who will be sitting in the classroom for another four years of their life and expect that…
The world we live in is not an assembly line world, where you pass a test and everyone calls you smart. It requires more involvement and other necessary skills that are not taught in the education system today. Many students are stronger with non traditional areas of intelligence that the SAT exam will never allow them to display. They have nowhere to showcase these talents and strength through this test classification of readiness for college, so they may miss out on the opportunity to qualify for competitive schools not being able to gain a competitive enough score on the SAT. It is ironic that plenty of studies have shown that everyone learns differently, yet we are all still being pressed to learn one way and achieve academically all in the same way until the point of college. The world is functioning today because everyone has a mind of their own and their own contributions to offer to it. We all are innovative and it is unfortunate that many people think that a college education is unattainable because they are discouraged that they did not gain a certain score on a SAT exam. Every individual has their own outlook to offer because we all come from different walks in life, giving us different opinions that can be built upon and makes for a thriving learning environment. This individualism makes for great diversity in learning environments, and allows for creativity to foster. It should not be suppressed, as it is by the current educational system. Many of the world’s most innovative people that changed society as we know it, such as Einstein and Bill Gates, were seen as failures according to the educational system we have in place. They did not let the limitations of an educational system constrict their capacities to contribute to society. We should not be judged…
Last night I sat in my room and wondered, what does it take to be successful, so, I made lists of all the required qualities and then, I made one more, for all that's needed to have an excellent academic performance and guess what?! They were just the same, hard work, consistency, determination, focus. so, isn’t it obvious that our qualifications are an indicator of our potential success?! But then, some you may disagree. I can understand. Success means different things to different people well, I can assure you, regardless of how you define success, having excellent qualifications is the primary and major step you need to take in order to succeed. now, you must be wondering “how can she say this? Hasn’t she heard of Mr.bill gates or Mr. Narendra Modi, a tea peddler who went on to become our Pm, they didn’t have a formal education”well, firstly, There may be a few people like Bill Gates and others who have made it, in spite of their drop-out background and lack of academic qualifications, but can this be generalized? Let me ask you, will you ask your child to leave schooling because if Bill Gates can do it, so can they? A few exceptions cannot be taken as a general rule.as a matter of fact, 73.4% of highschool dropouts suffered depression and some of them even turned suicidal. Reason? They couldn’t make it big in life, couldn’t get jobs due to lack of qualification. And in case any of you are still thinking about dropping out and becoming a billionare, let me tell you, High school graduates on an average earn 8580 rs. more per week than high school dropouts. And as far as Mr. Modi is concerened, if you think he lacks qualification and just took this giant leap from selling tea to solving national crisis.WAKE UP! He got his Masters degree From Gujarat University in 1983.of’course, the media wouldn’t tell you that, the tea peddler story sells more, right?…
