1. In your own words, explain the process of perception (gather, organize, interpret, negotiate). Then, using a specific example, show how 4 steps of the process work together.
There are four major stages in the process of perception. It may feel as though it just happens, but communication experts have broken perception down into four stages, gather, organize, interpret, and negotiate. These stages do not need to be in any specific order. We are all different and use the process differently. The first component of the process of perception is gathering or selection. Imagine another student walked into your classroom, gave your teacher a note, then left. If the instructor asked you specific details about this person would you remember? It safe to say that you would probably remember the student’s gender, race, clothing, age, or even hair color. But what about if the student was wearing a belt. Did he or she have their ears pierced? These small details are harder for us to remember. Why? Our bodies have so much information to take in. Like many things, we have our limit to what we can manage. So we get the important information we need to form an idea. Just like in the example above, we could say that the student was is a Caucasian, brunette woman in her mid 30’s. Our minds automatically took that information. It is known that humans react to stimuli most frequently to the most bold and identifiable ones. So does gender matter
