However, two questions peaked my interest more than others. The first question I have is, why do you think Percy and his friends overlooked the fact that Auntie Em was more than likely a monster? I believe Percy and his friends overlooked the fact that Auntie Em might have been a monster for several reasons. The first reason being because the group of demi-gods had lost all their money along their quest. In the bus explosion that had recently occurred, all of their belongings had been burnt down along with the flames. Furthermore, Aunty Em also offered them the item they needed the most, free food. Not only did the food taste good, but also its smell was irresistible. Percy even said, “The aroma was like laughing gas in the dentist’s chair—it made everything else go away”(Riordan 173). Additionally, I assume that both Grover and Annabeth caught on right away, but Percy was too engulfed in the food to notice anything was wrong. So when his friends started asking questions, he just denied them. I also believe a reason they overlooked the possibility was because they simply just didn’t want to believe it. They had been fighting monsters their entire quest, and when they finally thought they caught a big break, they didn’t want to ruin it. Consequently, they ended up almost dying because of their carelessness. Another question that came to mind was, what is the author’s reasoning when he has Percy having dreams throughout the entire story? I believe the author was trying to create more tension and put more questions into the reader’s mind by doing this. When Percy dreamed of Tartarus and the voice he believed to be Kronos, I believe the author was trying to suggest to the reader that there is more to the story than what meets the eye. Furthermore, Percy also had another dream about a friend who would betray him on his quest, and would create a conflict with him. The author’s purpose for showing
