Peregrine Dance Observation
On Saturday, April 15, I participated in an audition for Peregrine Theatre Ensemble’s summer 2017 production of CHICAGO, at Ripley-Grier Studios in Manhattan NY. Kyle Pleasant, Derictor/Choreographer; Adam Berry, Executive Director (who can be seen in NBC’s Ghost Hunters); Ben Berry, Artistic Director. Auditionees were required to wear black attires that show line and appropriate dance shoes. I wore my ballet slippers, a pair of stretchy gym pants and a black turtleneck, which turned out to be one layer too many that caused me sweating way too much. It was not a large dance call — with only 15 guys in the room — so each dancer got a lot of attention. We were asked to stay in the other room to wait for the dance call to start, in which I did some light stretching. The artistic director Ben Berry was in the room, who collected the headshots and resumes and had us filling out a …show more content…
Unfortunately, I got cut after the dance call. Before I left, Ben Berry walked into the room and informed those who were called back to stay and politely thanked those who were cut for their time. The audition in entirety is quite enjoyable and not as competitive as I anticipated. However, I had not foreseen the intensity of the dance call and was over-dressed, which resulted in being distracted that wasted a lot of my energy. My ballet slippers didn’t put me in advantage because of some “tappy" steps (it is time to invest in a pair of jazz shoes). Most of the dancers are still in college because the company encourages undergraduates to audition. Peregrine Theatre provides opportunities for college undergraduates to build up their resume with regional and professional credit. Being my first professional audition, it was overall very pleasant and encouraging. I learnt about the process of musical theatre auditions on a smaller scale that’s not overwhelming nor cutthroat. I’m looking forward to going on more auditions next year with more dance

    Brain Fart: Muscle Memory

Brain fart. I practiced that small thirty-second choreography over and over until it became muscle memory. I could have sworn I knew it so well I could perform in my sleep, but as soon as I met the intimidating gaze of my judge, I froze. When they taught the choreography during class a few hours prior, I felt no pressure and memorized every move with utmost precision. Any possible mistake I made would have been concealed by the other fifty dancers in the room. But right at a crucial moment during my audition for a local hip-hop dance team, I couldn't remember what the next move was. Any mistake I made this time would be painfully obvious and I would have no way to hide. Thirty seconds was all I had to prove myself worthy material for this…

I believe Ivan's assessment on the American west is fair. The settlers were eager people ready to start a new life and seek what the world has for them. While the Indians were just peaceful inhabitants fighting for their land and rights, learning the ways of the white man. The vast majority of their land had been taken from them and their traditional economic systems were obliterated, and the buffalo on which they had depended on were slaughtered by the millions. Epidemic diseases such as measles and smallpox decimated the populations, wiping out whole families and in some cases nearly whole communities. Both white and Indians were struggling to find a way to live in peace. Yet obstacles still stood in the path to harmony.…

Although most scholars simply define it as the art of designing and arranging dance, American ballet icon George Balanchine distinguished dance choreography as “an expression of time and space, using the control of movement and gesture to communicate,” (Anderson 5). This definition puts emphasis on the rigid structure and body control required to successfully produce a piece of choreography, an idea not uncommon in the ballet community (Conoley-Paladino). Like Balanchine, modern dance icon Merce Cunningham defined dance choreography as “an art in space and time.” However, in contrast, he stated that “the object of the dancer is to obliterate” that art, drawing on the importance of…

When I turned three, my mom signed me up for my first ballet class, and I loved it. Moving along to the music brought me joy and fulfillment. My liking for it has gradually grown into a passion. But over the years, I have also noticed a stigma for extreme competitiveness and perfectionism. Something that originally began as a form of worship has transformed into a celebration of the superficial and frivolous. Dancing often creates many concerns for young performers.…

Upon joining my sorority earlier this semester I never would have thought I would be dancing and making a fool out of myself in front of hundreds of people on Green Street. Here I was though on November 1st, after practicing for at most three days with the other girls and Hockey team, ready to get on stage. My grand big is a dance major so she convinced me to join the Spurs and Struts team because they did not have enough people and I have a hard time saying no. This performance ended up being one of the scariest, but most fun experiences I have ever had. During Spurs and Struts I had lost my dance partner last minute so I had to dance a part alone. Also, I could not grab my rally towel that was tucked in my leggings so that was embarrassing…

I could not wait to see my name. My stomach dropped. It wasn’t there. I was sure it had to be a mistake or a typo. I hurried to my director’s office with tears forming in my eyes. “There has to be a mistake,” I said. She told me to sit down then said, “I have seen you dance, and I know you can give me more.” She proceeded to tell me that she had seen me grow up dancing, and would not take anything less than the best. I felt horrible, and even considered quitting the team, but she wouldn’t let me.…
