Artery aid is a new innovative product that is designed specifically to treat sufferers of peripheral arterial disease. Artery Aid was inspired by personnel experience within the group. Kate, one off the members of Artery Aid, has witnessed the effects of peripheral artery disease first as her own mother suffered from the disease. This is what first inspired our product. The two main methods of treating peripheral artery disease are exercise and heat. Exercise works by working the muscles in the affected area, this leads to an increased demand on blood in the worked area which results in an increase in blood flow to the area. The increased blood flow leads to the opening of the arteries over time. Applying heat is used …show more content…
We are using low frequencies to work the muscles similar to exercise. The electrodes will work be passing a current from the positive electrode to the negative electrode via the muscle, this will cause the muscle to contract and then expand when the current has passed. This works the muscle like exercise and leads to increased blood flow. The device will use square wave frequencies to work the muscles, this is because they are known to work the muscles more evenly. Low frequencies are used to work the muscle as higher frequencies are often used to build muscle. At artery Aid we want to work the muscles without building muscle as this would result in more comfort for the user as it would not tire the muscle or injure the muscle. The electrodes will be reusable for up to 20 uses and will be applied to the user using a gel adhesive. The gel is used both to apply the electrode but also to make it more comfortable for the user as electrodes applied directly to the skin can be irritable.
The heat will be applied using a heat pad. The heat pad will have three temperature settings, the highest being 450C as this is the temperature proven to best dilate the blood vessels. The heat pad will secured inside a polycotton Velcro strap; this will make it more comfortable for the user and also make it easier to use.
Artery Aid is powered by a 9V lithium battery.
