Periphery Informative Speech
What does it mean to go to the peripheries? Periphery means the outer edge or margins. So, as a human, what does that mean? It means to go to where the outcasts are. Throughout history, multitude of people have gone to the poor and diseased. Many famous people have gone to the poor and helped them. But today, I want to inform you of one particular special man. St. Damien of Molokai is a saint not many Catholics know about. He was born in Belgium on January 3, 1840. He was originally called Jozef De Veuster before he became a brother. He was the seventh child and was born into a farming family. St. Damien went to school until he was thirteen. Then he worked full-time on his family’s farm. He knew a thing or two about building houses. They worked as a team building multiple houses and a few schools. They eventually built a parish church. The church is still there today. Now in the colony, the sick were cared for, and the dead had proper burials. Saint Damien cared for most of the people himself. He bathed them and fed them. He embraced them all with love. He grew attached to them. He was only supposed to be in the colony for a couple months. He loved the people to much to say good-bye, so he requested to stay. The day he got his request accepted, he was very happy.

He contracted the disease in 1885. He found out he had leprosy when he accidentally put his foot in scalding water, but felt no pain at all. People with leprosy have damaged nerves, so usually when hurt they felt little to no pain. What was hardest for him was when his superiors found out he became a leper. They were scared that if he came to visit them like he planned, he would give them leprosy. From this, he knew now what it felt to be outcasted from people you love.
