First and foremost, the book is a much more effective medium than the film version because of Michael Dobson’s presence. In the novel, Charlie’s sister is a smart, witty, but a stubborn character who makes foolish mistakes. Charlie’s sister does not have a name in the book since he wants to keep himself and those around him anonymous. His sister is with a relationship with a guy, also anonymous, who physically abuses her. Charlie’s sister does not break this relationship until the night she finds out she is pregnant. The night Charlie’s sister tells him about her pregnancy she is a mess, but Charlie being the sweet soul he is, consoles her. It states, “She just hugged me tight and wouldn’t let go. So, I hugged her back. It was weird, too, because I’ve never hugged my sister. Not when she wasn’t forced to anyway.” (Chbosky, 116) This indicates Charlie and his sister are like average siblings who do not get along with each other but at the same care for each other immensely. However in the film adaptation, there is no such scene
