REFLECTION PAPER

As we were walking across the gates of DLSU, I felt uneasy because I didn’t know what to expect from the immersion in barangay 704. The villagers welcomed us when we reached their place. Me and my partner volunteered to be assigned to the Muslim family in the barangay, because we wanted to experience and learn the things they do. When we were walking to their home we saw children playing and the elders smiled at us. Once we reached their home we felt at home because of the feeling of warmth to us. Their home is very small to which, you can only walk two steps. They are six in the family and Nanay Salud (our host parent) is married to a Christian man. She said that it was difficult because she was the only Muslim in the family, her children and husband go to mass separately. While she was away buying food for lunch, we played with the kids and I began to realize that life is simple: be happy and you will be fulfilled. We had fish galungong for lunch which was very good. After eating, we walked around the barangay with our host parent and we saw our fellow block mates with their host families. Then, we stopped at our friend’s host family’s house near our host house. We caught our friends singing karaoke as a result we joined them. But because of the lack of the time our singing was cut short because we had to go back to our meeting place. When we had settled down we began to reflect how their life and our life was different. We also thanked them for their hospitality they have given us. Once we reached DLSU we felt very tired but I said to myself it was worth it because of the lessons I’ve learned during our stay in the barangay, where I can use in my daily life to achieve my goals. Life isn’t all about money, it is about how you live your life with your friends, family and other people. Doing the right things in life instead of the wrong things will help us achieve our desired goals in life.

The narrative became quite interesting to me the portion in regards to the Malhado way of life. These people love their offspring, family, and customs. They were dedicated, hard workers and respected and valued their customs. For example, whenever a couple gets married, neither the bride’s father nor mother may enter the son-in-law house after the nuptials. Not even their children of the respective couple. I thought this was strange and a bizarre to impose on your loved…

The couple is of the Muslim faith and traced their historical background back to Washington, D.C. They explained that Muslim groups are divided in different subgroup on the basis of their ancestry origin. According to Rahim, the Muslim cultural background consists of a strong family with strong elements of strict discipline. Growing up in such a family may set specific prerogatives within social life. However, this background setting can also make it hard for someone to attend any social gathering. As a result of Rahim’ childhood experience, those experiences made him unsocial and difficult for him to relate with the opposite sex.…

New lessons were introduced, which means we have to tackle with new challenges in the following days. In this week, I have read the article “Growing up Hmong in Laos and America: Two Generations of Women through My Eyes” written by Pa Xiong Gonzalo, who came to the United States as refugee in the past. She is a Hmong, an ethnic group from the Asian countries. This article is about her experiences on how her life was when she first came to the United States to the success of graduating from an U.S university. During that period, there were a few cultural and tradition issues happened in her family. I did not know Hmong group before as they only constituted a small amount of population in the Asian countries. Their stories seem interesting to me as I think that some of their tradition are quite similar to the Malay’s tradition in Malaysia.…

Where are the parents? In the kitchen comparing recipes and which high school their teens will attend next year. There is a close-knit feeling between these people. Most of them are not kin by blood, but are by spirit. They are the type people that when there is a death in the family, the women rush over to clean the house for the family, and the teens take the little kids to the river to entertain them while the funeral is planned. It’s the type of kinship that has friends marrying other Nuyakan’s after graduation, and a longing to return home when one must move away.…

Olaudah Equiano’s life as a slave was different compared to the other slave stories we have known. His experiences as a slave were actually pretty amazing. Some of his masters treated him as part of their family which was rarely to happen for a slave. In addition, he was able to go around and explore the world; but that's not it, he even purchased his own freedom. One of the bad things that I considered really changed his life was when he and his sister was abducted to sell and later on got separated from one another. This could highly affect a person’s different aspect of his or her life especially when they're close to whoever they got separated from. Equiano used that separation with his sister to keep on traveling farther from home rather…

Politics has always been one of the subjects where people use all sorts of different words and styles to convince people that their choices are the right choices. It isn't surprising that one of the easiest places to find deductive arguments and fallacies is during one of the largest broadcasted and viewed political events, the Presidential Debates. In this paper I will point out a deductive argument and a fallacy from each of the three presidential debates and explain what type of argument/ fallacy it is and what clearly makes it so. I will then cover briefly whether or not the candidates make a greater number of valid or fallacious arguments and how these effect the way I see politics.…

This experience is part of my most memorable happenings in my life. Meeting other people in an unexpected time and place. Asking their piece of trust and time to asks some questions is such a thrilling and a little bit awkward experience but honestly I really enjoy this activity with my classmates. By the way, the man that I’m with in the picture is Mr. Abraham. He is a tourist here in the Philippine. He is a designer, 24 years old, living in United Arab Emirates. He was with his family at that time I conduct an interview with him. He is a nice and approachable person. Honestly the time I approached him, He was wearing shades and during our interview he take off his shade and I was really captured in his pleasing eyes. He is really handsome with a good tone of voice. He’s religion is Muslim. I also like his sense of humor because, He didn’t tell me first his true age but when im going to write the first age that he said, he stopped me and asking me” am I really look like 21 years old?” and I say yes you do look younger than 21 and he really laughed about it. Another is that I share also that my mother was also converted into Muslim and he asked me and tapped my back while he is laughing at me, if I have also a plans to be converted into Muslim but I answered No. As the interview goes by about his personal information, I asked a question to Him. “So sir Abraham what is God for you?” and in a couple of second I share first about my belief in God. “ You know what sir I define God in our religion as like an air, Maybe I can’t see him personally but I can still feel him.” And he answer me back, “Yeah, you’re right. We believe in our religion that you can really feel Allah whenever he is mad because you’ve done something wrong or you will feel his…

On our program, I’ve experienced new things like helping people and thus communicating to them and also have fun. We enjoyed our little time with them and even it just a short time I felt that I’ve made new friends again. At first, I wasn’t sure if I can participate with the class and so with the group because it was actually my first time experiencing that kind of approach. In the place where I was used to which is overseas we didn’t even have that kind of program. That’s why I am really glad and shocked that I did it, I really approach them and talked to them. There were some rules that were informed to us before we enter to their home and we understood that especially I and I respect them for that. I admit that I don’t have enough self- confidence to have a conversation yet for myself I did great because I even introduce myself with a smile on my face and on top of that they remembered my name when our professor asked them what is my name. On my personal view aside from that it is required for our NSTP102 I want to know them more and be friends with them even for just a short time because I cannot promise that I can go back at Bahay Pag-asa because like the guards informed us “Don’t promise anything to also avoid being hurt or down”. I will do my best in fulfilling what I have to and thus overcome my fears and I hope at the end of our program we enlightened them with their hearts open for a new adventure, a new beginning.…
