This plate illustrates the story of the valiant hero Perseus (a demigod) as he saves the princess Andromeda from a sea monster. The greek myth says that Andromeda’s mother had said that her daughter's beauty was greater than that of Poseidon’s companions. An angry Poseidon, sent off a sea monster to their land. The plate shows Andromeda chained up to a tree, the sea monster at her feet and Perseus holding the head of medusa. It is said that he used the head of medusa to turn the sea monster to stone. This piece was made for Isabella d'Este (a duchess) who was said to have an appreciation for ancient Greek and Roman art.
