Personal Essay: The Sport Of Cheerleading
Have you ever thought about cheerleading? I’ve only done cheerleading for the 7th grade middle school football season, but i’ve had so much fun! In the beginning of the football season, I was a base while stunting. Close to the end of the football season I became a back because of a serious problem that I had. Throughout the football cheerleading season I had an enormous amount of mistakes, and I know i will make more in basketball season.
Cheerleading IS a team sport. It all started in 6th grade, when my best friend, Kiara at recess told me that I should do mini cheer camp wit her this year. A week or so after I hear the office say in the announcements that there was mini cheer camp sign up sheets in the office. Kiara and I got signed up. A couple weeks after mini cheer camp started, and I loved it! I learned all the cheers so quickly, I could already do most of the stretches. There was this one special cheer leader that stood out to me because she was so nice and great at cheer, She told me that i should try out for the Middle School cheer leading, and that’s when I got the idea to try out. My aunt was also a cheerleader and convinced me to become a cheerleader. My best friend,

Stunting is where there is a group of 4 to 5 people. There are 2 bases one on each side. The bases lift up the flyer into a stunt. I’ve always wanted to be a base. There is also a back, the back holds the ankles of the flyer while they are into a stunt. The back also helps lift up the flyer into the stunt. The flyer is the main purpose of a stunt. The flyer gets lifted into the stunt, in many different ways. Sometimes there is a front, the front stands in the front of the stunt to keep the girl stable if she falls forward, it is very rare to have a flyer. I think stunting is the most exciting part of cheerleading. I think this because it is a group performing and learning new

In the past three years, the NFL has faced a multitude of lawsuits dealing with the unfair payment of NFL cheerleaders. Multiple different articles support the cheerleaders, agreeing that an average of a $1,000 salary each year is unfair. However, other articles are against a higher payment, claiming that cheerleaders work because they enjoy the sport, rather than for the money. While Megan McArdle’s article, “NFL Cheerleaders Don’t Do it for the Money” uses informal diction, comparisons to other jobs, and concession to the opposition to support the claim that the cheerleaders do not deserve to be paid more, “Who Do We Under-Compensate?”, by Ira Boudway, uses a more formal diction, statistics, and concession to the other side of the argument to support the opposite.…

For example, associations such as National Cheerleading Association, and the Universal Cheer Association are some companies that give away cheerleading bids. There are approximately 40 companies that give out 12 Worlds bids, which makes a total of 480 cheerleading teams eligible to attend the cheerleading Worlds. This competition is the equivalence of the Soccer World Cup, and even the Olympics. All of the “cheer-lebrities” are attending and competing at this competition, they expect to get their picture taken, and autographs just as other sports sensations such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Shawn White, and Serena…

I never decided to be a part of a team because I knew I wasn’t athletic and I was very clumsy considering the number of times I've fallen when I ran in my physical education classes. As for clubs and organization, I started to be a part of the AVID program in seventh grade through senior year of high school. Joining the AVID program was my idea because I wanted to gain a better understanding of college. Since my parents never attended, they didn’t know the process of enrolling in college and other factors. The reason I stayed in AVID for so long wasn't just because of the field trips to colleges but also becoming a part of a family with my classmates and getting to know everyone, even more, every year.…

Some of the stunt in cheerleading can be dangerous if you do not perform them correctly like the shoulder sit. A shoulder sit is when the front spot reaches up and back and joins hands with the flyer then the flyer step into pocket on your thigh and she swings over one of her legs then another .As Craig Peters states in Chants ,Cheers and Jumps“The base stands in a right lunge position in front of the flyer and, extends her arms above her head, reaches…

Competition cheer is one type of cheerleading. It is usually associated with a gym that teaches tumbling, gymnastics, and cheerleading all in one. Most of the squads have more than one coach such as a tumbling coach, a stunting coach, and a choreographer. Competition cheerleaders have one main objective which is to compete. Since they are competing, the squad must be dedicated to practicing and performing. The cheerleaders do not cheer for other sports such as basketball or football like in high school. They also do not use offense or defense cheers, but they use “competition cheers” instead. Just like being in other sports in school, you must try out to be on the team. Competition tryouts are a lot harder than in high school. You must go through…

    Cheer Captain

There are many different opinions out there about cheerleaders, many good, and some bad. Some think of them as the girls standing by the football field, but I think of cheerleading as a symbol of all the spirit that we can share, and a token of appreciation toward the team that’s being cheered on. Cheerleading is such a vital part to many sections of the school. If I was chosen to be a captain for the 2013-2014 year, not only would I make sure that any negative opinions were squashed, but the great qualities the squad holds, are emphasized. I have come along way since i started cheerleading. I remember my first day of cheer and how nervous I was to be trying something I’ve never done before, and how inexperienced I was. Throughout the season, I’ve always worked my hardest to pick up new dances, stunts, and cheers right away. Since most of the new girls joining cheer this year have never done cheer before, I find it a privilege to help them grow to become the best they can be athletically, and with their attitudes. I think an important quality of being a captain is always, always, including everyone! I feel like i dedicated my time to be the best cheerleader i can be and also the best person i can be for myself and i have accomplished it, but im not finished yet. I learn new things everyday, you learn in the process. I want the new girls to be the best they can be, i think i can really help them. Actually, i know i can. It's super hard to be confident and i learned that but i built up my confidence i want these girls to experience their first year of cheer and be like "wow". I've discovered myself in so many ways, i want the new team to do so as well. Cheeleading is something im very passionate about and i just want the world to know that. I know my schedule for the next school year will be a problem considering i might not be able to have cheer sixth period, but i will try my hardest to work something out. I need a chance. I…

I recall being the youngest girl, cheering with others several years older than me, when I began Area Youth Football cheerleading way back at the age of five. I had tried other sports such as soccer and basketball, however they didn't electrify me as cheerleading did. I instantly fell in love with the sport of cheerleading. To this day, I would not even consider changing my commitment to cheerleading, for it has positively influenced my life and taught me countless lessons that will stick with me forever.…

When I’m volunteering my responsibilities include leading the athletes through stretching, helping the athletes practice their routine, and assist them in stunts and tumbling. Cheerleading is incredibly dangerous sport and with the athletes throwing their bodies around a lot can go wrong. With my expertise on cheerleading, I help make sure all tumbling and stunting is executed correctly, minimizing injuries. Every moment I spend coaching I must be completely alert and aware, so no athlete is injured because my negligence. Our team always could use more helpers, so I started recruiting other cheerleaders in our gym to help out with Eye of the Storm and Storm Chasers. The most difficult part about recruiting people is that not a lot of people will commit to spend their free Saturdays volunteering. Another difficult part of volunteering as a whole is being a coach first and a friend second. I love the athletes I coach, and we’re one big family. However, sometimes I need to critic their skills and be their coach not their…

It was currently six o'clock pm on a Sunday night, I was on my way to cheer practice. I have been on the this cheer team since I was four years old. The coach I had was mean, and I hated her. And I didn't like the team I was on. I never felt really safe going to the practices or cheering for the team. So when I got to practice I started stretching, I had to stretch so I wouldn't pull a muscle or break a bone. Then it was time to stunt. I didn’t like stunting because I was the flyer, usually the flyer is the smallest or lightest person on the team but I had to do it anyways. My bases and backspots threw me up in a couple toe touch baskets.…
