Personal Narrative: A Career As A Sonographer
It would be my pleasure to apply for the opening within your company as a sonographer.

I have completed my associates degree at South College in sonography/radiography. Although I plan to continue to get my bachelors degree and further my knowledge in this area. I have job-shadowed for two years at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. I am working towards being able to research the technology, and hopefully find a more advanced way to develop images that better help sonographers and radiographers all around the world.

I find that I am a calm person when put into stressful situations, and that allows me to think fast upon dangerous conditions. I am friendly and kind to everyone I meet which is great because of all the people I

Using the most updated technology, caring for patients, and working in a lively healthcare environment make sonography an enjoyable career. Sonographers are challenged daily to provide the best possible examination and care towards their patients. The field of ultrasounds and career opportunities are widely growing. Sonography offers a wide range of workplace options, along with a variety of specialties. Seeing that this job would not just be found in an emergency room or an operating room, sonographers can work at private offices, clinics, medical laboratories, and sometimes mobile ultrasound companies(Jobs). Most sonographers are hired for full-time, but some must work nighttime and weekends(Jobs). The degree field for this profession is sonographic and radiologic technology. The degree level isn’t as high as what most medical careers require, but having an associate's or bachelor’s degree and sometimes certificate programs for those who have experience is what is needed. There is no required experience before becoming a sonographer other than the schooling and training. Very little states require licensure for this job, although sonography certification is required by many employers, along with basic life support and CPR certification. Being a sonographer also comes with a strong average salary of $69,000. As medical careers flourish, the need for technicians in many fields of medicine are increasing. “Most new sonographers enter the field with a two-year associate degree in sonography or the equivalent military training program” stated Decker, “Some already hold related degrees in other fields, and can qualify in sonography by taking a one-year certificate program”(Decker). Some sonographers begin by training as generalists, then learn specialized skills in the workplace. Sometimes sonographers complete training programs focused on just one specialty. Specializing…

The economic situation in the United States has led to many American workers considering the benefits of pursuing a two year, career-oriented education instead of the traditional four year bachelor’s degree. There are many associate’s degree programs that offer a quality education in flourishing and relatively high paying fields. One of these is Medical Sonography. Medical Sonography has enormous growth potential, and offers someone the ability to work in the medical field in a rewarding career. It is also a less competitive program than some of the other health sciences fields offered at the associate’s degree level, such as nursing or physical therapy assistant. Because of the less stringent admissions guidelines and a comparable earning potential, Medical Sonography is an exceptional choice for many people looking to further their careers in a limited amount of time.…

I have chosen this career path for the patients. I have chosen this career because it is two paths that I can switch back and forth from, cardiac and pregnancy. I can go to school for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, then at the end of my four years, I can either go into cardiac sonography or pregnancy sonography. I could also be on a rotation so I will be able to do both things that I would enjoy. Being able to take this career path will give me confidence that I can do something that has never been done in my family. My mom and stepdad, stepmom and dad, have never been to college. So completely college and going into a career that I want to pursue means a lot. I am so ecstatic to show my mom she did raise me right. My mom and Stepdad are my…

As I was looking for a Physician Assistant program I focused on three main things: research, prestige, and location. I was fortunate enough to discover that Yale PA program exceeded my expectations. As a clinical research assistant, I have had the pleasure to work with great clinicians (doctors and physician assistants alike) who have graduated from Yale Medical School and Yale PA program. Their perseverance, ability to react efficiently and decisively in difficult situations are some of the many qualities that Yale highlights and solidifies in its programs. Furthermore, shadowing one of the physician assistants who graduated from the Yale program gave me a better insight on the rigorously, expectations, and preparations of Yale PA program.…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

It was a dreary day in October when Mom asked if Kaley, my older sister, and I would want to come with her to a sonogram. My mom was eight months pregnant at the time. Kaley and I have talked about this for awhile now, and we got the chance. The next day, Kaley and I left school around nine o’clock and checked out. We got in Kaley’s truck and drove up to the hospital. As we were walking in the doors, we saw mom waiting for us. She looked so happy. All of the nurses were really nice and said hello to us. Mom, Kaley, and I sat in a waiting room for about half an hour before the radiologist came out and told mom to come on in. Mom introduced Kaley and I to the lady, and then she asked if either of us were interested in radiology. At the time, I didn’t know anything about it. Walking into the small room with one bed, I saw the machine that showed the sonograms. I was awed at the sight of it all. I took a seat right next to mom. The lady started the procedure with the gel and pulled her tools out. I sat there so amazed by it all. I had never experienced anything like this. I couldn’t keep my eye off the monitor. I imagined if I grew up to be a radiologist. I could help people. I wouldn’t mind it because I would not have to deal with blood or internal parts of the body. The next week mom went back to get another sonogram, and I begged her to let me go. She said sorry, she couldn’t. When I got home from school that day, Mom told me that the radiologist in at the hospital said that she’d love for me to come job shadow…
