Personal Narrative: A Career As A Volleyball Team
Beep! Beep! Beep! Prying my eyes open I struggle to find my phone to halt the wretched noise. Hitting snooze, I peer at the clock that reads 5:10 A.M. Dragging my limbs from my fortress of comfort, I stumble to the light switch tripping over book bags and shoes. Triggering the gun, my eyes snap shut as the bullet of light pierces my pupils. After the initial sting wears off, I race around throwing on clothes as I brush my teeth. I then grabbed my four bags for the day and head out the door. Dreading every second of this painful early morning process, I still enter the gym with a smile on my face and gear up to hit the court with my team. Throughout the past nine years I have played volleyball. From YMCA to now high school, meanwhile, I have never gone a month away from the court. Over the years, I have always found myself as an outstanding player on the second team. Starting my first club season, I made the second team. However, I strutted my skill on that team and was a leader. Mostly due to the fact that I was the loudest and most talkative. When I was about to …show more content…
Approaching this season, I constantly deliberated if I would play my senior year due to the fact that I am not the most valuable player. However, thinking about not playing the sport I loved with my teammates, I decided to complete my final season. Once deciding to play, I came to the realization that I would not be playing every game and would be sitting the bench. Although for many this would be defeating, I decided to make it a positive role on my team. As a leader on the B side of my team, which plays the starters everyday in practice, I made it my responsibility to push my team to be ready to compete and push the starters to win the state title. At every match while sitting the bench, I decided to take on the role as the team's cheerleader and uplift the team when the brutality of the game struck down its iron

First of all, playing sports is one of my favorite things to do. They teach me discipline and I must do and Not do what coach says. Sports also teach me good sportsmanship. I learn to love the game by playing my opponent/friends and showing how to take a win or loss. Last year playing basketball we didn’t lose but one game, I was devastated. I like to think I took the Loss ok but I just blamed it all on myself. I got to show my winning spirts in a ton of games that season, and I think I showed my happiness well. Our team didn’t brag or show off we simply just played our game, and the results turned out as they may.…

To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. Because of this, I have developed a deep insight of the components necessary to be a true Pentathlete. In addition to having first-hand experience, I also have extremely high expectations for both myself and other students, for it is essential in my academic growth. With this, one like myself could ultimately…

Sitting in the locker room today, packing up my bags for the last time, it made me realize that my softball career is actually over. I just wanted to thank everyone who has had an impact on my softball career first starting with my parents, brothers, and other family members. Second my coaches throughout this whole journey. And third to all my teammates that I have had over the years. Those friendships are what got me through the tough times and great times. I am honored to be able to say I was a softball player at West Stanly for 4 years. For the ones who are still playing, give it your all, turn teammates into your friends, and always cherish each and every chance you get to play on that field. It's crazy how much time flies so just make…

It was a frigid, windy, Friday night in October. The only light was the bright and beaming illumination of the stadium lights projecting over the soccer field. The bleachers were full, it seemed as if the whole school was there, and as a freshman with anxiety, it made it hard to cope with the fact, that I was going to be a starter for the varsity soccer team.…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

One extremely important activity outside of the classroom that has helped me grow as an individual is Church League basketball at my local YMCA. From the outside looking in this league seems to be a form of glorified pick-up basketball with referees and a scoreboard but there is so much more to it. Almost half way through my junior year my father convinced me to try out for the varsity basketball team at school in November to which I hesitated at first but later gave in and tried out only to be cut. At first I was upset because I had never been cut from a team and I was unsure of how to handle it and what to do with my free time. This prompted me to reach out to God and ask him for a sense of direction and purpose in this time of my life to which He responded with a friend inviting me to Church League basketball. Once I experienced a few scrimmages and practices I decided to commit to playing Church League and coming to all of the…

It was winter season and that meant basketball. This year was special because I got to play for Davidson Day’s seventh and eight-grade team. See at our school the middles school ran through 5th to 8th. The middle school basketball teams were divided into a 5th-6th-grade team and a 7th 8th grade team. This season was different; we would play more games and different teams. Also we got a new coach and older teammates. Tryouts were rough; the older kids were picking on the 7th graders constantly. I was the only one they liked because I was good. The season got even worse. The 7th graders never played in the games and sometimes in the locker room older kids would yell at us for messing up. This was horrible to watch and be apart of.…

As a freshman, with previous experience playing volleyball in middle school and at the beach, this essence of competition was very attractive to me and so I tried out and made the junior varsity team. Last year, during my club season, after sitting on the bench for the first part of the year, my coach recognized my improvement and hard work and gave me the starting role for the second half of the season. The little voice in my head telling me "you'll never make it!" or "you're not good enough!" inspired (and continues to inspire) me to persistently improve every aspect of my playing during practice and such an attention to detail, combined with my inner motivation to improve, lead to my…

My family did not let me renounce my dream, and they helped me prepare for the next year’s tryouts by driving me to club tryouts, countless lessons, and intramurals. Daily, my brothers and I would practice in our backyard just tossing the ball around. Every day, I would improve, serve the ball further, and my confidence would grow. My dad encouraged me to attempt to play for club teams, and even if I didn’t earn a spot on the team, at least I would gain practice and experience. I tried out for four club teams, and I didn’t earn a spot on any of them, but I believed my skills were improving. By chance, I found one club was having their tryouts much later than all the others, and when I showed up, I was the only one there. They asked me to play for them, and I agreed, but they resulted to be private lessons. Every Monday, I would practice for a couple of hours with a student coach. Occasionally, I would play scrimmages for other teams. Most importantly, I enjoyed those weekly practices. In the final weeks, leading up to the school tryouts, I attended a variety of intramurals and camps. I enjoyed playing with other girls, and I enjoyed the sport. Even though I was usually the weakest player, I enjoyed playing the sport more than winning. When the time came, I was confident in my abilities and prepared to earn a spot on the…

I was fourteen years old just starting my new chapter of life at Hamilton High School. I did not really know what to expect from high school but the year started great. I was having fun in my classes and made some great friends. However, I was nervous about the Varsity Golf team tryout. Since I was 7 years old, basketball has played an integral part of my life. I have devoted countless hours to not just a sport, but a passion, an outlet; to the game that I love. When I arrived at Bow Middle School as a fifth grader, my classmates and I would always look up to the 7th and 8th grade middle school basketball teams. Every year during winter carnival, the boys and girls teams would play a game in front of the entire school. Playing in that game became a dream and a goal of mine, but first I would need to make the team. For three years I developed my basketball skills, using my passion for the sport and desire to play in that game as motivation. When tryouts for basketball in 8th grade drew near, I knew I was ready. However a new coach would be at the helm this year. Our new basketball coach was also a coach for the youth football program. This resulted in numerous football…

New things can be alarming at times, and when I tried out for two new volleyball teams, I was terrified, and nervous. But I loved the feeling of the volleyball in my hands, the roughness of the ball, the smack of the ball hitting the floor. So I knew that the only way to get better at volleyball, was to try out for other teams such as Heat and Inferno. I get to meet new people, and there is way better competition so that will make me a superior player. So to be able to stand up for myself, I had to use all of my strength to do the best that I can, and show off a little while I do it. It took almost one and a half try outs, but eventually my determination took over, and I started to play the way I know how. I got offers from all of the teams I tried out for, but I narrowed it down to Heat vs.…
