Personal Narrative: A Short Story: Usain Bolt's Heart
As my mum and I walk out of the salty water onto the soft sand I feel the sun beaming down onto my shoulder making it sizzle like a burn. I quickly walk to my day bed and pull out my towel from my bag. Once I finish drying the water off my body I lay out my towel on my day bed, and begin to put on my sunglasses. As I look up from my sunglasses, I see my mums face in shock staring at the horizon. I rapidly swing my head to see what she was so stunned by. My mouth drops in fear.
“Tsunami” yells the lifeguard in the yellow tower.
I begin to panic. Everyone screams in horror. I run straight through the huge crowd of screaming people dodging every child that steps in my way, trying to reach elevated ground. As I find a mountain about 1 kilometre

I bolt past them, running through crowds of people, faster than Usain Bolt has ever run. I dodge past trees and dash past many buildings until I reach the beginning of the hill. My legs start to slow down and my heart feels like its beating out of my chest, I try to run quickly. Pushing myself up the tremendous hill. Huffing and puffing like I'm in a triathlon. I'm halfway there. I stop, panting like a dog on a hot summers day. My heart suddenly sinks in sorrow, I realise I lost my mum. Tears begin to stream down my face I drop to the ground praying that my gorgeous mum is safe, as the first tsunami wave smashes the shore colliding beach chairs and sinking umbrellas in a tangled mess. I see the people get swept up off their feet drowning in the power of the wave, hitting rocks and broken glass. As I think about my mum, I know she wants me to stay safe. So I run faster up the hill, as I sadly watch the people down below. My legs begin to feel like jelly jiggling all over a plate, I become unsteady and loose my balance tripping over a stick, my foot gets stuck in a nearby hole. The second wave comes in. I see it in the corner of my eye. I try to rapidly squeeze my leg out of the hole, scrambling like a worm on a hook. The big blue wave builds up in height it's heading for the mountain, ready to break on me. I close my eyes. Waiting patiently. Listening to the sound of the wind gusting on my …show more content…
Breathing every chance I get. Scattered debris fills the water, I lay as close to the ground as I can trying not to get sliced. I'm panicking, I'm struggling to breath… The wave begins to lower, it dies down and washes away. As I close my eyes I start to feel the heavy water evaporate off my body, while I lay on the destroyed mountain. I'm coughing and coughing, spitting out filthy water, trying to breath. I hear footsteps coming closer to me, I slowly try to open my eyes. I faintly see a man bending down in front of me. He lifts me up and holds my body. I open my

Purpose: To investigate tsunamis Introduction:I have always been fascinated by tsunamis. I have to say that when I vacationed in Hawaii and snorkeled in the Pacific Ocean, I did give a fleeting thought to tsunamis. In the last activity, I mentioned that the characteristics and behaviors of waves that you learned from the video could be applied to other waves. As you complete this activity, I want you to think about the similarities between the rogue tsunamis and the common waves we have studied.Materials:none Procedure: 1. Answer the question based on your exploration on the tsunami website. 2. Submit the assignment according to the directions below.…

The Great Wave off Kanagawa prints feature a great breaking wave about to engulf three small fishing vessels. The dominant wave consumes more than half of the space and frames Mount Fuji in the distance. Three tiny boats and an even smaller peak of Mount Fuji seem to serve only to highlight the force of the water. The dramatically curved, upwards line of the wave acts as hooks or claws which almost personify the wave into a predator grasping at its target; the fishermen in delicate fishing boats seem to have no chance against the water.…

“POP!” “POP!” “CRASH!” Screams of agony and terror filled the town as I sprinted out the front door just in time to see the 15- foot wave of molasses crash down onto the town bellow. Woman, children, and men were devoured by the thick wall of cement while trees and houses were ripped out of the ground and demolished. Every living thing that got in the way of that 35 mph giant was crushed and suffocated by the sticky syrup that engulfed their lungs. I then realized that the wave was raging closer like a tiger chasing for the kill. I lunged forward to move but my legs remained motionless; fear held me like a prisoner chained to the ground. Before I could blink I was hit by such a substantial force and fell to my knees landing in an ocean of…

Crying for help, the music from the performers was getting louder to my ears. I was holding the lower handles from the ship. Looking down and seen the lifeless forest below me; no one ever return from that forest. I'm afraid being in that situation. I tried to pick myself up, but the air ship was too slippery.…

I would be pretty scared if I knew it was a tsunami, and I would be worried for the people on the coast it was heading for. It probably wouldn’t be a very big wave if I was far out in the ocean so it wouldn’t scare me as much.…

To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. Because of this, I have developed a deep insight of the components necessary to be a true Pentathlete. In addition to having first-hand experience, I also have extremely high expectations for both myself and other students, for it is essential in my academic growth. With this, one like myself could ultimately…

Not knowing where to go. But feeling the building rumble and shake in my fear of claustrophobia. I remember hearing “GET DOWN! RUN!” Making a quick mover I jumped forward and make a break for the fire exit, it was crowded with men and women crying in pain, I joined them. The only thing I could think about is getting out of this place and Michael. I kept on stumbling down the steps holding on to people on my way down. Feeling a terrible pain in my right thigh, I peered down and saw a big gash of blood and a clear shard. I guess I couldn’t feel it because of all the adrenaline. I didn’t have time for this, only for Michael and escaping. From above a sound of falling concrete and metal bending brought an increase of screams. Maybe that woman from earlier was caught up there, so much for being important. I finally found a clearing of light from the exit. Flooding people out of the exit seemed like a liquid rushing out of a beer bottle. Finally, I made it outside but my matters have only gotten worse, the building was collapsing and I’m under everything. A lady grabbed me from the back and pulled me hard, making me drop down. Dodging a cinderblock, thanking her I ran the opposite way of the building and looking for the closest cover. Glancing back I saw people getting crushed from the construction above. There was no time to think, I had to go. Finding a distant building I took cover with the rest of the citizens praying for their life. “What’s happening?” I hollered. An old man next to me said “an attack.” My eyes widened as I watched the building fully collapse upon hundreds and hundreds of innocent people. “Who would’ve done this?” I asked terrified. The man ignored me as he watched the people were panicking. He might be panicking, but not showing his emotion. I calmed down my breathing and took a drink from a kind man giving out bottles from the café, also bandaging my wound keeping…

The wave was beginning to form, it was go time. I have never run so fast in my life, trying not to leave behind the people I loved, but desperately trying to secure my safety. Sophia, Jack and I made it to a high rise building, over 20 floors. We were on the staircase, trying desperately to make it to the roof of the building, but the cries of the people in my beloved city were louder than I have ever heard before. We were only on the 7th floor when BAM, tsunami has hit. I saw everything happening from a window in the staircase. Hundreds of people being drowned in the rolling waves of the tsunami. The tsunami was so big and powerful, so eager to make us suffer. I couldn't tell if I was crying because of the beauty of it, or because it just killed my…

I spent some time at my aunt and uncle’s house with my 2 cousins and one day they decided to do something out of the house. We went to this beach called “Playas,” located one hour away from their house, and we were having fun all together. Later on, my uncle “Jimmy” and my cousin “Pipo” and I decided to go into the beach and suddenly huge waves came towards us and pull us deeper to the ocean. We were trying to get out, but each time we tried to swim to the land the water pull us back farther. After that, my uncle came out of the water because he is tall and he went to look for help. Then, some lifeguards came out of nowhere and my uncle told them about us in the water. They ran to look for us in the water and save us. I was relieved that we were saved but still scared about waves and I decided not to go to the beach anymore. Then, I talked to my mom about it and she helped me to get over it and I am ready to go back to the beach and enjoy…

I saw the rip current open up a few times that day, but by the time it rolled around noon, it was pulling more because the water was going out for low tide. When I saw the raft, I never really put two and two together until the raft got in the rip current. Two kids and their dad were rapidly moving out to sea. I reacted just like we were taught in class; dropping my flag and calling in on the radio. I leaped from my tower to the sand, grabbed my buoy and sprinted down the beach. I did a perry angle and took off into the water, throwing my buoy to the side as I got knee deep in the surf. I porpoise dove through the shallow water, came up and sprinted out to my victims, keeping a close eye on them as I did. By the time I got to them, the dad had abandoned his kids and swam in saving himself. The kids had jumped out of the raft, which was now upside down and proceeded to try swimming the raft in. I told them I was a lifeguard and here to help. The girl, about my age, looked at me as if I were crazy and told me they didn't need any help. I looked at her younger brother, who was tired and panting, and I asked if he was okay. He desperately told me, gasping for a breath, that he needed help. I wouldn't have been able to bring both victims and the raft in, while fighting a rip current. So I firmly grabbed the rope on the raft, with each of them holding, and started to kick. I soon realized I was getting nowhere and still drifting out to sea. Panicking, I scanned the beach for back up. When the lifeguard truck pulled up, I let out a sigh of relief. There were about 5 guards who came hustling out of the truck with buoys to come and back me up. When they reached me, it took some pulling to get everyone in safely raft…

On December 26, 2004 the world experienced the most devastating natural disaster to hit the Indian Ocean. It was classified as a tsunami, a tsunami holding immense power equivalent to the destruction of three nuclear bombs. Tsunami waves can become more than 30 feet high as they come into shore and can rush miles inland across low-lying areas. The death tolls were astronomical causing much grief, pain and depression throughout the world. "Estimates of the total toll from the eleven countries hit by the disaster range from about 162 000 to 178 000. Tens of thousands more are missing and many are presumed dead." (The star, 2005) A similar situation did occur in the past where a similar atrocity erupted on the Pacific Ocean. It created disaster along the Chile coastal areas in 1960 and killed many civilians but not nearly comparable to the death toll caused by the vigorous Asian tsunami. Reading in regards to the tsunami that had occurred in Chile, I find myself in a predicament wondering why warning devices were not established over the oceans to prevent this disaster from ever massacring a portion of the world's population. In a macro level sociological perspective, the world has determined the Asian tsunami to be a crisis which has stricken the world emotionally and physically. It has been established that Sri Lanka and Indonesia suffered the most losses. At the moment the globe has unified to attempt to produce a sudden recovery for all the countries affected. The crisis has the entire globe involved with international matters such as foreign aid, re-development of the shattered countries and any other matters regarding the existence and protection of human life. I intend to focus on the world's adaptation to the Tsunami disaster and also explain the effects of the tsunami through a sociological perspective by focusing on the role of Media, corruption and poverty.…

It doesn’t take a person to realize how the resident of Japan felt after the incident. Just by looking at the effects of the tsunami you could immediately feel their sufferings, grievance and loss; as if I, too, was personally affected. However, if you put your feet on their shoes to look and feel their feelings deeper you could probably ask yourself if life is still worth living. You will probably ask if Japan will still be the same, if God mercilessly punished you, if you could pull yourself together and stand back again, head up. You will probably lose hope or maybe not only lose it but it would be crushed. People lost not only their family members but also their houses and living. In the documentary film, it was shown their how the people have gathered in an evacuation center and it reminded of what happened to our Cagayan de Oro which was also hit by a typhoon Sendong on December 2011 and caused people to lose homes and family members and living, but in the case of Japan, Japan was much worse.…
