Personal Narrative: A Trip To Senegal
A Trip to the Motherland It was back in December of 2013 during fifth grade. My dad had set up a trip to go to Senegal. Senegal, Africa; which is on the western side and also where he was born. We were going to visit family members on my dad’s side of the family and it would be my first time I met them in person. It was also going to be my first time leaving the United States. I was very excited and also very curious to know if Senegal, and really Africa in general, would be the same as shown on television. Usually, on television, Africa is portrayed as a poor place with trash, polluted waters, and poor homeless sick people everywhere. Honestly, I wasn’t convinced that image was true. It just didn’t seem possible for a country to be structured that way, because I have seen photographs of cities that looked well developed. I was looking forward to visiting the …show more content…
Throughout that day, I was just thinking about how in less than fifteen hours I would have been over six miles high, traveling six hundred miles per hour. Then it was the big day. I said goodbye to all of my family members and my father and I headed off to the airport. We arrived, drop off our baggage and went to check in. When my dad and I finished that process, we sat down to take a break. For some reason, I was thinking a series of “what if” questions regarding attackers on the plane, just because of previous terrorist attacks. I knew I was most likely safe, although I just wondered. Our flight number was called and I walked on the plane. Right before I walked in, I did my flying routine of giving the plane a slap. I do this for good luck. Shortly after we got seated, the engines started winding up and I began thinking again. Next thing I knew, the plane started rolling. Louder and louder the engines were roaring. The take off was my favorite part of the plane ride. We were moving like a roller coaster and shooting off the runway. Faster and faster we rose into the

It was unusually cold on this morning of September 11th, 2001, and my alarm had just went off. The odd but needed 5 am. was when I woke up, because my flight was going to leave around 8:30 and I needed to be there on time. The reason I was flying to San Francisco was I was having a family reunion with my dad, my step-mom, and my step-brothers. So, I jumped in the shower quickly with joy and excitement. I hadn't seen my family in forever since I had gotten a job as the assistant of the manager in Ralph Lauren Headquarters. I had just gotten my hair dried as I heard my phone ring. It was dad, making sure that I was on my way. I talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. I glanced at the clock and realized…

I never realized how lucky I was to be granted such a stupendous life until I saw the poverty some people live in. Over the summer, I was fortunate enough to be able to take an ephemeral trip to Nassau, Bahamas. It was much different than I imagined it would be. I remember walking around and almost being frighten to leave my parents sides. There were natives on every street corner trying to con their way into you spending money on their fake product; there were people going through the trash looking for food; there were people sitting on the street with all their belongings tied up to their bicycle street. You could just tell this country was nowhere near as advanced as the United States. It was nothing like the pictures and it got me thinking of the gloomy lives these children will have to grow up in and all the opportunities that they don't have available here.…

I came to the United States from Colombia when I was just 3 years old. I was brought into the country of bright opportunities because like every other parent, my mother and father wanted what was best for me. My mother had to give up her dream job in Colombia, which was being an accountant for an essentially important company, in order to facilitate my well-being and open up the doors for my future. As the years progressed, I began to acquire both languages, English and Spanish, but there was a point where I became tongue tied and had to assist in speech therapy. My parents would talk to me in Spanish at home but in school all I would hear was English, my mind was extremely confused to the point that I made my own language by using both tongues in one sentence.…

It is by giving back to the community that raised us that we truly understand that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. I loved the Ethiopian community I lived in and I was always the first to give back to the community, given the chance. But the community I grew up in wasn’t the best in the slightest. It was filled with sick, homeless people on the streets waiting for death to do them apart. It was a havoc of garbage that resulted from accumulated littering; it is to be said that the people in the community didn’t care at all about the environment they were living in.…

This summer, I was blessed with an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to travel to Haiti on a mission trip. Of course, I was slightly nervous about traveling to a third world country, where I did not know the language, and the only people I would know would be the people from the church that I was traveling with. However, I knew this would be a life changing experience, so I took the leap! I am so grateful I did because every second was worth it! Our mission was to work with orphans, help homeschool English speaking children, and meet with the women’s group of Grand Savann Christian Church.…

It was 8:45 in the morning and I fell asleep before the plane took off. We were supposed to be going to Los Angeles but we were going towards the North Tower but we were in the middle of turning around I dialed 911 and said “Hello police we are on flight eleven Boeing seven hundred sixty-seven and there are five hijackers, four here in the aisles and one flying the plane”.…

Because I was at the back, I couldn't tell what was going on in the first class section. Three people with red bandannas entered the cockpit. The had left one person outside of the cockpit who was holding something in his hand. After a minute or so, they came back out of the cockpit dragging two bodies behind them. They went back in the cockpit and within a minute we were told from the new pilot that they had a bomb on board. They allowed us to make phone calls. I was the first one to be able to make a call. My parents didn't pick up the phone, so I left a message telling them that my plane had been hijacked. After I left a message, I sat down in my seat and let others…

At the end of December 2015 we got on a plane and flew to Haiti. As we arrived we got on the Tap-Tap (taxi) and got driven to the orphanage. The drive was about an hour and a half long on roads that are not paved and had huge potholes. The only scent in the air was not what you would expect- it’s not a tropical flower smell, it’s burning garbage. While trying to talk to my family all we could hear was chaos and mass commotion. “ I’m excited but so nervous at the same time!” I screeched. All of our jaws dropped in wonder. We had all been waiting for that day since the past year when we were in Haiti.…

I was four years old when I began attending a private, independent school in my city called African People’s Action School (or APAS for short). I attended for the next five years of my life, learning African history, building character, and becoming a future leader. My family at APAS were the first people, aside from my parents, to teach me valuable life lessons. There, I learned what it meant to be resilient, honest, and respectful. Unfortunately, in 2007, APAS was shut down due to a decline in funding. Some of the relationships that I built, the people that I called my family, are no longer prominent in my life, however, the morals they taught me are.…

Overwhelmed. The only word I can think of when the flight attendant calmly says, “Welcome to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, you may now unfastened your seatbelts.” Tears fell from my eyes and all the emotions that I was feeling for the last 4 hours suddenly began pouring out. I had never been to Haiti and the only mindset of it I had was that there was killing and kidnapping. I was extremely anxious because of that. “NO!, YES!, NO!, YES!, NO!!”, my conflicted mind begins to yell. I couldn't believe that I was actually there. Holding up the line, I got off the plane as slowly as possible. Ironically, being up in the air was much more relieving than being on the grounds IN HAITI !. “Daph, you’ll be alright,” my mom says. “Hopefully,” I mumbled. I thought to myself that maybe just maybe I will actually enjoy it.You will never actually understand the importance of bigger things without appreciating the little things…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

After retaking the LASSI I have noticed a considerable amount of improvement as well as regression. In the beginning of the year, I vowed to myself that I would become a better student. I wanted to maximize all of my abilities in order to be successful. So, after I took my first LASSI and had my talk with Mac, I began to implement new strategies meant to help me accomplish my goal. First I had to deal with my anxiety. In past years I suffered with a lot of anxiety while learning math. I used to love math very much, however, this changed after my 6th grade year. Math became a foreign subject to me. I could no longer make connections and solve problems. As a result, my grades in math began to drop. As a person who is used to getting A’s and B’s on assignments, I had a difficult time in coping with my failure since it didn’t live up to my standards in the subject of math. My difficulty with math eventually caused me to have anxiety. I had carried this anxiety until my sophomore year in high school. It seemed as if no matter how hard I tried to concentrate on math tests my mind would always become blank. Luckily I had an…

Then when we finally arrive to the airport after a treacherous 4 hour drive a delay was went into effect for my aircraft, I was so furious that I start screaming at my dad to get my aircraft ready. Then when I heard the announcer stating that the aircraft has landed and is ready for boarding I was the happiest person in the whole world. I was so eager to get on the flight I was panicking out of my mind, when I stepped in my row of seats it was like a normal seat but it dint look like it, it could recline all the way back and it had VIP gift bag which I was most excited about. Then when it was time for flight I was like a little kid in a candy store, I pushed all the buttons I could then proceeded to fully recline the seat to take a nap which was the most comfortable nap I’ve ever taken. Then after a 9 hour flight on flight heaven I was all refreshed and ready to try to climb the mountain. Then I proceed to walk out and to my surprise there was nothing that exciting other than a huge mountain. My dad called me out to tell me our bus to the lodge near the mountains is ready and we have 2 minutes to mess around. After I boarded the bus I was still a little bit sleepy, but I want to see what was in Tibet because that would have been the last time I would be there.…
