Personal Narrative: Ageism In The Workplace
I remember when I was 17 how elated I was when I got my first official job working at the mall but that that changed quickly. I remember my view on the world was naive to say the least but that was abruptly shattered as soon as I was exposed to such a negative work climate. I remember my boss introducing me to all my coworkers and he made a snide remark about an older coworker. The lady was about 68 years young or so who worked with me, and she seemed to talk about her grandchildren all the time. I guess to some it was off putting but I liked that she cared about her family. The problem with her work performance was the fact that she wasn’t computer literate. I constantly heard stories about how the people there were such a burden or rude. Even if this was the case the overall attitude about the job lead me to believe ageism was to play. In my opinion people shouldn’t do a job where communication with people on a regular basis is a necessity yet you commonly refer to them as a burden. Simply if you put negative energy in something you will be getting the same energy out as well. Mind you the facility he worked at was with terminally ill older people however, that is no excuse for laughing or making snide comments about these people. Unfortunately, because of the negative language that was used and the constant complaining about changing individuals who soiled themselves and leaving them in waste for extended periods of time I was forced to report this …show more content…
No one should feel like they are being pushed out of a job and not given the proper chance to thrive. Because these several people above resonated with me so differently on a monumental scale I want to launch The Grey Matter initiative. GMI will help people who might be suspected as falling victim to elder abuse or improper treatment in healthcare facilities. GMI’s mission statement is as follows: To break things down for people who simply don’t understand the golden rule that states simply treating people the way they want to be treated. Were you wrongfully terminated or not given proper training that resulted in termination? Well we have lawyers on call who would love to fight the good fight for you! I am tired of seeing older people being treated as less than, they are a well of knowledge. At GMI our goal is to assist all individuals over the age of 65 no matter race, creed, sexual orientation, or any other factors. However, we refuse the right to assist anyone who might use hate speech or language that makes anybody feels less than. To elaborate It is 2017 so just because certain phrases were acceptable doesn’t mean we must still govern ourselves like we don’t know better today.
