Personal Narrative: An Interview With Ralph Waldo Emerson
I decided to interview my best friend, Whitney, about the ways that she shows and expresses love. She said that she realizes that different people have different kinds of love languages, and she tries to meet their own, unique ways of receiving and feeling love. However, expressing words of affirmation comes more naturally to her, and it’s easiest for her to express her love and care for people using this form of love. She also stated that receiving words of affirmation helps her feel validated and important more than any other expression of the love language. I have seen this multiple times when she has been going through a difficult time. My first reaction is to help her in the way that I naturally feel loved and helped, through quality time …show more content…
However, I realized last year that I prefer something else even more: the giving of gifts. When I buy somebody I love a gift, I get giddy just thinking about giving it to them. I can rarely wait until the occasion (birthday, holiday, etc.) and usually end up telling them what it is or giving it them before the date I originally desired. And this extends to every kind of gift. Whether it is a surprise expensive concert ticket to my best friend’s favorite artist, or even a candy bar that I bought for someone to give in class, I get so happy and feel so fulfilled in giving gifts. For me, it is helping me express to the person that I think about them. It is easy to think about somebody when you’re with them, but when you’re thinking of little gifts to give them when you’re away, it shows even a greater love to me. So when I go to the store or I’m in places where there are things to purchase, I am often thinking of others and seeing if they would like anything there. It doesn’t only extend to purchasing, but I love to make things for people. Before I left on my mission, I made my mother a book for Christmas. I asked almost everyone that knew her to write a short letter expressing a memory or reason why they loved her. I was ecstatic every time I received a new letter, and there ended up being dozens of pages in this book. This gift required a lot of time, and I

My greatest influences are my parents and my brother. My brother suffered from Guillain- Barre Syndrome when he was eight. He lived in the hospital on an artificial ventilation for 97 days and later he had to continue physical therapy for at least ten years as he was completely paralyzed. My parents and my brother devoted their few years completely for his treatment. Today, my brother is a successful engineer working in the bay area. I learned that with dedication, determination and diligence we can achieve our dream in life…

Throughout my academia, I have been a member of several clubs and organizations, but have yet to attend a free leadership and service conference. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars needs a free in-person event that hosts a multitude of workshops from becoming a better member, to becoming a better leader and more. This event should be a two-day weekend long including update meetings on how the organization is accomplishing its endeavors and goals in terms of membership count, influence in the community, and upcoming events. During a workshop, we could bring in experts to discuss how to become a better writer to increase our chances of earning NSCS scholarships and other scholarships. In another workshop, our members and club leaders…

At times I feel as though I'm trying and failing to be a human being. But what makes us human? I feel although I'm a human-shaped shell made out of pieces of things I find interesting. Instead of a real identity. Just layers of things that I hope will make me different from others. But am I? We rely so much on the opinion of others. But why? Why do we crave acceptance of others? If people were to look closely, they'd notice there really isn't anything there.Just a mess of a person trying to find their ‘place in the world. All we want is to be remembered. Just to prove we are something , we where something. How will I be remembered? Or will I fade into oblivion? Is this the meaning of life? To spend it hoping we have some significance in this…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

“We all stray from time to time….and when you do, OWN IT! If you deny it….you are giving up control again.” This can teach a lesson to people struggling with drugs and alcohol. If you deny that you have a problem, you will continue to let these things control your life, but if you own up to it, you can help yourself or get help from others. The quote, from the “I don’t know the Bible…” paragraph, “‘Well done, my good and faithful servant,”’ reflects what I believe in and what I have learned. Growing up I heard many people tell me, “God first, others second, and yourself last.” First of all, these two quotes are telling me to live a faithful life by putting God first. Also, to put others before me and serve them just like Jesus did.…

In general, I would be a revolutionary because I would want freedom from England as much as my neighbors and I would want to be known as a Revolutionist living in the colonies. Even though, the American Revolution was known as “civil” war, a war that is fought between people of the same country (If you lived at the Time of the American Revolution, “n.d.”). In short, England ruled all the colonies located on the Atlantic Ocean which was known as the thirteen colonies consisting of two and half million people (If you lived at the Time of the American Revolution, “n.d.”). In fact, liked most settlers, the task of growing this new country into a profitable society took a lot of hard work and most of the settles were indentured servants selling their service for four to seven years, but in return they were looking…

Today was the day. The big day. My election for Lieutenant Governor of Division 2B for Key Club, an international service club, was today. Fear and anxiety pricked my skin in rapid movements emanating from every pore. I rehearsed my speech for the fifth time that day. Upon arrival at the Fairfax Library, I urged myself to remain calm. I quickly scouted out the other girls who were present; one girl was dressed professionally with a folder in her hand. I knew that was my competition. The girl spoke eloquently and genially, she radiated enthusiasm and a certain warmth that I did not have. With every question that was asked, she answered with a smooth smile and high-pitched tone that was dripping with sincerity. I bristled inside; I had just been slapped. I was shrouded in a cloud of anxiety and anxiousness. Suddenly, I was dragged from my reverie.…

My Socratic Seminar took place about a week ago on April 24. I always enjoy talking with my other English education majors because though we have lots of classes together we don’t often have many opportunities for open discussion between us. It was even better this time because we also had other language classes and journalism represented to add to our normal group of people. I was excited to see what knowledge they could bring to the table. Having read the questions beforehand, I was slightly nervous that we would actually find something to talk about. This class has been a slight struggle in just trying to differentiate between “teaching literacy,” which is something that all of the English students do all the time, and finding ways to “focus…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

Traveling into the Indian Territory, we were being angrily chased down by three Indians furiously shouting at us. Dashing through the thick forest, the savage Indians were throwing spears and shooting arrows that narrowly missed us. Although neither Gideon nor I was mortally injured, I did suffer from a nick from an arrow piercing near my ear. Thankfully, a group of burly fur traders approached from the side, which frightened the Indians to run away. Acknowledging that Gideon and I were inexperienced travelers in the west, they offered us protection in exchange for some valuable possessions. As a consequence, knowing that they were our best alternative for survival, we gave them our antique gold pocket watches and assumed the identities of novice fur traders. From that point on, we followed them through the west and adopted their skills for efficiently hunting animals and keeping warm in the harsh, cold weather. During one of our rest points, we approached a large Cherokee settlement located in Park Hill in which our group leader was friends with the Cherokee leader John Ross.…
