These are the necessities of every human being which have to be satisfied. One Friday afternoon I took my three-year-old son to the park by my house to play. As I was pushing him on the swing, I noticed a woman talking to her daughter in Arabic. I approached her and introduced myself. I found out that she was born in Jordan just like my husband and has only been hear for 5 years. She began to tell me that she had no family here and that her husband would not allow her to make friends with any Americans. I figured this would be a great opportunity to serve. I began by inviting her over my house, offering to watch her daughter, I also cooked her a couple meals and sent them over. I listened as she poured out her heart; she shared how she felt alone here in the United States.…

George Shirk sits in his office at the Mammoth Times on a Saturday afternoon, with his dog, Fido, who writes his own weekly column for the paper, curled up underneath the desk. Early December is the quiet time between the Thanksgiving and Christmas rushes at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, and Shirk, a 60-year-old news veteran with a sandy smoker's voice, has kindly agreed to give me an armchair tour of his adopted hometown.…

It was a different kind of road trip. Somehow I knew not to ask, "Are we there yet?" I don't think any of us knew where we would eventually end up that evening. My parents were doing their best to act like this was some type of family vacation. But mom was quiet (she never is), and the car was packed with odd items one would never take on a vacation.…

My fiancé and I normally communicate clearly to one another. We do not typically have to worry about language being that much of a barrier. On one occasion, however, our use of abstraction led to a misunderstanding that led to an argument that frustrated both of us. I was drinking red wine and was tired one night. Brett (my fiancé) told me that my eyes and teeth matched: they were both red. I became offended and thought it was rude for him to point something such as this out when I had had a long day caring for our daughter. I became quiet, as I usually do when I am angered, and sat watching television. When he asked me what was wrong, I told him that I thought what he said was rude. He said that he was joking and offered me some Visine.…

In a soccer, regional game during my freshman year, one of our top players got injured at the beginning of the game. Our team had worked extremely hard all season to win this game, and when he fell down and injured himself – I thought it was over. As he was being “helped off” the field by an athletic trainer, our team decided to huddle around him. All of a sudden and without hesitation or regard for his injuries, he began to offer us some words of advice. "Nothing has changed, and you guys have the next 80 minutes to show these guys that we are destined to win this game.” It was at this very point that I decided, as mere freshman, to “step up” and to offer my leadership skills to my team.…

I walk through double doors that are held open by regrets and anxiety. My instrument is in my right hand; dragging me to a crowd of people. My music is in my left hand; puncturing a hole that reminds me of my sins. The tights I am wearing squeeze so tight that my legs are suffocating. My hair is pulled back revealing my identity to the world. My black dress is fitting for the funeral I am going to. This will be the most competitive competition I will be in.…

Creativity continues to be a difficult word for me to define succinctly. Yet throughout my journey of self-reflection and self-realization, incited by Dr. Johnson’s course, Leadership & Innovation, I notice that I am doggedly pursuing mastery of the creative energy within me. In this pursuit, I have learned that truly embracing and knowing and utilizing my own creativity requires a fearlessness, free of self-conscious worry and self-judgment. There’s a quote---whose source has been debated (Henry Miller, Ernest Hemingway, or Vladimir Horowitz)---that sheds light on this lesson in the need for the creator’s need for courage. The quote goes, “The thing is to become a master, and in your old age acquire the courage to do what children did…

I’ve always had one perspective when it came to sexual intercourse, it was wrong. Perhaps my mother managed to drill into my head that it was a horrible, shameful thing, or maybe I just taught myself that it was a disrespectful, dirty thing to do to yours and another’s body. I can’t honestly say I know why I started thinking this way about it, but what I do know is that it simply seemed like something that just wasn’t for me. I never really argued myself on it, and I never really thought about it. Although it was still an extremely “hot” topic while I was in junior high, I chose to listen to those conversations instead of becoming one of those conversations. It was pretty easy to avoid it all in junior high, easy enough actually. People seemed more persistent while I was in high school, but I always managed to find some way to get them to give up in the end. Friends and peers were the easy ones to get rid of. My real problem came from someone I least expected. My very own cousin.…

Some even say you have to fail to succeed. We all have different sayings for this crazy thing called life but, we have to take what is given to us even if its negative and try to make into something positive. It was a morning in March, I anxiously went to the DMV to take the permit test it was my birthday so of course I was really excited and nervous at the same time. After I had been sitting more than thirty minutes, waiting and praying that I would get nothing but easy questions so that I would past with no problems at all, an old, short woman was sitting at the front desk and she called my number to come up to her desk.…

Fear is something that now everyone has, but it is something that everyone will or should experience in their life time. It is not bad to have fear about something, it’s actually normal to have fear. The time when fear caught me at my worst time was 3 years ago. A warm summer night in July, I was in my dad’s house sitting on the couch watching TV. A normal thing to do at 8 o clock. My dad comes down after a short argument which led to my brother slamming the door and getting on his longboard. I wasn’t sure what was happening at the time, but what I did know is that it wasn’t going to be a fun night for me. Daniel was 15 at the time and was doing everything wrong with his life. Not to get into detail, but doing drugs at his age was the “cool”…
