Personal Narrative-Captain Bauder
A tarnished sword sat in my grandparents' house for 50 years. No one knew where it came from. No one knew why it was there. Three years ago, I spotted this sword propped up against the fireplace. I noticed an inscription in the brass and leather scabbard with a name, Ephraim F. Bauder, in cursive script. This is the story of that sword. I’m a history nut with a passion for artifacts. So much so, that I started my company, Wormuth Antiques, to resell flea market, garage sale, and estate sale finds to local antique shops and on the internet.
Although I regularly buy and sell rusty, antique bicycles, ripped military uniforms, and dusty paintings, this sword had an unmistakable historical aura to it. I know that sounds odd, but I picked it up and felt its importance and value.
I brought the sword home and rolled up my sleeves to do some research. After scouring the New York State Civil War Archives with minimal success, I needed to contact a Civil War historian to take my research on the sword to the next

I knew it was in Riverview Cemetery in Baldwinsville, but I wasn’t able to narrow down the location. So, one soggy Saturday I combed through hundreds of moss covered and weather beaten headstones for Captain Bauder’s plot. By early afternoon I had located his gravesite, plot 81RS. This brought a finish to my research.
A mysterious sword propped up against a fireplace at my grandparents’ house turned into the most historical and fascinating artifact I have ever researched. This sword is a perfect embodiment of my love for history. For me, it’s not necessarily the textbooks or the lectures. It’s the intriguing stories of ordinary people like Captain Bauder, details of their lives, the place they hold in our country’s past, and, in this case, the connection to my family. The never ending quest to uncover the stories of our ancestors is what brings history to life for

Colonial Williamsburg is an open window into the past, as it depicts many significant social and political groups. This educational museum, which is the biggest living one on Earth, has had plenty of significant historic structures that have benefitted leaders and the citizens themselves. Journal of Private Detective Andrew Jahns February 24th, 1837 The news of the murder of the late President Andrew Jackson has just come across my desk, and I must say that I am quite shocked. With only a few days until the end of his term, it was an odd time for him to be assassinated. After thinking about it however, he amassed a considerable number of enemies throughout his political career, and there are a number of people with clear motive for this murder. My initial thoughts are that this murder was the work of Jackson’s long time political rival, Henry Clay.…

The stories of history that we often make are formed from uninterested facts that seem cold and heartless. That are molded into epic dramas that show humanity of an event creating a martyr capable of rallying tired spirits and strengthening broken resolve of those under siege by an unrelenting enemy These stories are meant to teach lessons, but often have little based in fact. As legends are required to rally nations not just simple recounts of an event. It is the legend that makes an event significant. A legend can be change to appeal to its audience. Facts however, are stone unable to be shaped. As they lack the appropriate pathos to move the stubborn hearts and minds of many. One such story that became legend…

Tim O’ Brien, having the memories of war engraved in his mind, recalls the memories of his youth during battle in “The Things They Carried,” an intriguing collection of military accounts that symbolize his attempt to resist closure from past experiences. O’ Brien’s story reflects the difficult choices people have to make in their struggle to confront the war waging inside their bodies as well as on the ground they tread. In Steven Kaplan’s criticism, “The Undying Uncertainty of the Narrator in Tim O’ Brien’s The Things They Carried,” he explores the uncertainty and inevitability that lies in the path of each soldier through their military conquest of Than Khe. In context to O’ Brien’s story, author Tina Chen in her literary criticism, “Unraveling the Deeper Meaning: Exile and the Embodied Poetics of Displacement in Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried,” captivates O’ Brien’s primary motive of telling a “true” war story. These stories and journals can be synthesized together through paralleling ideas such as the concept of imagination versus reality, O’ Brien’s credibility to his story without outside sourcing, and the lingering uncertainty dividing the men’s sanctity of what lies beyond, both literally and figuratively. Tim O’Brien’s short story, “The Things They Carried,” contemplates the value of reality versus personal relevance, and through Kaplan’s “The Undying Certainty of the Narrator in Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried,” and Chen’s “Unraveling the Deeper Meaning: Exile and the Embodied Poetics of Displacement in Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried,” the two authors argue within the scheme of the imaginative American dream the hidden angst of the valiant; when faced with adversity, the weight of ones pride surpasses the weight of ones fear.…
