Choosing Civility

Instant gratification... our society today knows little else. Every new generation breeds new problems with less patience, all in the name of progress. We have fast food, fast medical care, instant access to information, instant communication with anyone in the world, and so much more. Of course progress has its benefits and rewards, but at what cost? Are we capable of achieving this progress without sacrificing the values and beliefs our ancestors built their lives upon?
The answer is yes. Three notions I feel would create a more civil community are respect for others, self control and compassion. Imagine the Utopia that would be our world, if all would practice these

A little over a year ago, our home was burglarized by two teenagers. My children and I had opportunity to witness and be part of civility in action. Our home backed up to Eagle Rd and a gentleman in a car passing by noticed the teens jumping our back fence with our belongings. This stranger immediately fulfilled his civic "duty" and called the police who arrived shortly thereafter. The boys ran and stashed the "loot" and hid in the neighborhood. Our possessions ( with the exception of whatever they shoved in their pockets) were recovered because of the driver who called the police. That person had a general respect for others and an awareness that caused him to do the right thing instead of driving right on by. The teens who broke into our house, had a lack of respect for others, and a lack of self control. Later the teens were caught when one of the mothers found my credit card in her sons room and called the police . Her decision to do …show more content…
It seems like such a simple concept and yet every day so many opportunities to display it are missed because of our own self absorption. We are great at tuning others out around us while we thumb through our iPods on a busy street or talk on our cell phones while waiting in line at the grocery store. Respect for others doesn't have to be something that is visible to those around us. Many times it is in our unseen actions that we show greatest respect for others. If we learn to respect others, things like courtesy, care, consideration, the golden rule, politeness, and tact just naturally fall into place. These are all products of

secondly, on a social level if people showed common courtesy to one another the world would be a lot better place to live in, Addition showing respect in gentral is important because no one likes to be disrespected. if someone is talking then you rudly interrupt them with out saying excuess me, this person maybe feel disrespected then they might get hostile then it may end up turning into an alterention.even more so most fights are started when someone feel`s like they are not be treated with the same respect. futhermore respect plays a big role in life because if you dont respect the laws that are inforsted you may end up in jail, however its better to treat everyone with respect because if you dont it may end in a bad result.…

In 1891, Irish author Oscar Wilde observed, “Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man’s original virtue, it is through disobedience that progress has been made, through disobedience and through rebellion.” I believe that this rings true, because most, if not all, social progression that has been made throughout the course of American history, has been a result of rebellion, usually against something that a group of people felt was unfair. A prime example of this is Martin Luther King Jr. He was, at the time, seen as disobedient in the eyes of the law, but as a result, made major progress for African Americans. Martin Luther King Jr. was disobedient in terms of laws he felt were unjust, and led an African American rebellion against them.…

Everyone has a role in their community, and based on their role comes a responsibility. My role in my community is as a student, and my responsibility as a student is to respect my peers and to learn how to become a productive member of society. Young students generally lack the ability to respect themselves completely, which makes them have trouble respecting others. However, ones ability to control his or her anger can affect their ability to respect. I think that when someone in a community has hurt or been hurt, the community is partially responsible for helping the perpetrator/victim heal. Whether the people involved in the problem are respected or not, the community is still responsible for helping them in the stark task of healing because they are a part of the community, and they each contribute toward helping the community.…

“It is not always the same thing to be a good man and a good citizen” (Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics). Although civil disobedience may cause divisive rhetoric and chaos, nonviolent resistance positively impacts a free society by providing an impetus for progress and starting a dialogue about injustice. Our nation was founded on principles of civil disobedience. In Federalist #51, James Madison proclaimed, “If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary.” Instead, it is up to humankind to ensure that our government protects the rights of all people.…

I remember the first time I saw Gene. I had just arrived in South Carolina after moving from New Jersey when my dad was offered a promotion. It was a rainy day, I spent most of it driving, trying to figure out my way around town. For lunch, I stopped at some sort of pub that’s been closed down for years now. When I walked in, it was completely empty except for one boy sitting at the counter all alone. I sat on a barstool, a few down from the boy and ordered a cheeseburger. Trying to remember which road I took to get there, I realized I had no idea how to get back home and the boy spoke.…

Everyone wants respect, the poor, the rich, the strong, the frail, whole countries in fact; people will stop at nothing to be respected or rather honored. Honor and respect are like brothers, sharing many of the same qualities and morals for you give respect to those that deserve to be honored. In many ways disobedience creates the human characteristics that now exist. we live to establish and command only to further destroy and separate. Although these words may sound negative, they don't have to be. There are plenty of instances where the only option for a better resolve is the separation from an already established principle. It is this way, in which humans can evolve into a better version of themselves. In my own personal thoughts, a person can not remain glued to one way of thinking, but must expand, create, and gain knowledge of many ways of thinking. In this aspect, a person can grow rather than be satisfied. People must rebel and disobey to acknowledge of new and possibly better ways of thinking and innovation.…

If one were to look in many dictionaries, the meaning of the word civil would be different in each one. This is because a single definition cannot describe what it means to be civilized. The meaning is different for every person because every person's individual values and morals are different. Religion, conflict and compromise, exploration, communication, organization, and rational thinking all contribute to being civilized. Through an examination of these factors one can attempt to explain what it means to be civilized.…
