help others. This has altered our minds and our responsibilities for others. Personally I believe that we should help others once we reach a point that we are able to take care of ourselves. Others think differently though, in the novel Night written by Elie Wiesel you see how some people think that we should beat others and become rulers of people instead of trying to help them. During one scene Elie’s father was working until he began to be “... [beat] with an iron bar…” by a German officer named Idek because he believed he had full superiority over his father. Idek’s thinking is clearly different than mine because instead of attempting to help others, he attempts to become a ruler of others. This is probably believed by his thought process due to him changing when Hitler declared the Germans to be superior to the Jewish, thus causing him to believe he has the right to do whatever he feels like. Influences clearly do play a role in altering our beliefs about helping others. As said above it is possible for those surrounding us to change our thoughts though, so as we grow in numbers to a community we should change correct?
Sadly the answer is no as we see today and in the novel Night. There is a clear showing of competitiveness in today’s society due to a majority of people's belief in attempting to get more money. We see others put people down to grow stronger, such in the business industry. We have small mom and pop shops that continue to go out of business due to big industries taking over all of the customers who are looking for lower prices. Meanwhile in the novel you see the clear differences between how some of the Jews treat one another. When Elie first arrives at a concentration camp he is introduced to the horrific scene of “dozens of inmates, sticks in hand, striking anywhere, anyone, without reason”. This shows off even with all of the Jews together as a group they aren’t willing to cooperate with one another, instead the people who have managed to find a source of power, weapons, begins to take hold of their cell. This just shows that our responsibilities are only as great as our personal beliefs of others even in a group
together. Even with some personal beliefs of our responsibilities as humans being to help one another, in this maddening world driven by greed, those people's’ opinions aren't enough to change how society works and has worked in the past. Therefore we find our responsibilities as to differ from person to person, but as we grow in number we see how a majority of people believe only for the survival of the fittest.
