Personal Narrative: Death In Mexico
With my heart beating out of my chest, the only thing I could think of was that I did not want to die in Mexico. It was a warm sunny day as we started our ATV adventure outside of the comforts and security of the resort walls. There were 6 of us and we planned to take turns driving. When it was our turn, we could go anywhere we could get the machine. The rental guy was nice enough to loan us his personal iPod, as the machine had a stereo. The iPod was filled with Mexican music of all sorts. How fitting, we realized. What would a Mexican adventure be without the music?

As my friends husband started out as the first driver, he decided to head up some rough terrain, At this point my friend and I are complaining of pain and demanding to

I looked around and saw a small dirt road that lead away from the beach inland. I decided to take the road, not realizing what was in store for us. As I am cruising down the dirt path with the Mexican music blaring loudly, drowning out the buzz of the motor. All of a sudden the ATV died. As we sit there with the music still playing, looking around at each other with huge eyes, we were able to get it restarted. At this point that should have been our que to turn around and head back, but we continued on. This happened a couple more times but at this point we were miles from the beach. We weren’t too worried yet as we could see our hotel in the far distance. It was now my friends turn to drive and we at this point realized that we could not let up on the gas pedal as it would die again. We turned down another dirt road, this time being a little larger than the last dirt path. We soon found ourselves driving past a property that looked like a compound. There was a tall fence wrapped in flesh tearing barbed wire. There were about 3 or 4 out building and as we got closer there were a group of men standing in the yard waving at us. When out of nowhere two very large, aggressive pit bulls appear. They were running at us with great speed, saliva dripping from their mouths as they were quickly catching us. They were so close that I could have reached out and touched one or they could have easily ripped my arm off. Luckily the ATV did not die on us at this point. With the gas pedal mash we slowly gained distance between these grossly angry

When we arrived I was amazed at all the different costumes. There was a couple that had two bulldogs. The male was dressed as a gentleman, and the female was dressed in a little queen outfit. They were so amazingly cute. As me and Tailgate walked around, there was a woman that fell in love with Tailgate. She followed us the entire time, taking pictures of Tailgate. Then we entered the last building there was a woman with two Boston terroirs. They were attacking other dogs, growling, nipping. The sad thing is the lady did not stop their behavior. When we were close Tailgate hid behind my leg. I did not realize there was a couple behind me until I heard this low growl. They had a huge pit bull. The little dogs decided they were going to attack the bigger pit bull, and he let them know he was not going to back down from them. Well the lady with the two little dogs scooped up her little minions and let this gasp out. She was telling anyone that would listen how this big bad Pitbull tried to eat her babies. I was so mad. She could not control her little pups, and it took a growl from another dog, (it had to be a pit), for her to finally control them.…

I met my mentor as I opened my front door on a brisk fall Friday night, November 11, 2011 to be exact. He stood at about 5’3,” which made me laugh a bit because I was taller and I would be calling him my mentor. The style he had was that of a preppy college student. The voice he had was so loud that it echoed throughout my house as we first chatted. Out of all the attributes that make up Francisco, the one that will forever be stuck in my brain will be that of his enormous smile. Francisco always figures out a way to keep his big bright smile on his face, despite the situation he is facing. Francisco San Miguel’s dedication and hard work are two things that have led him towards his success…

Four years ago, on a normal Thursday school night, I was sitting in my room doing my homework and my aunt came bursting into the door saying my brother was kidnapped. I did not want to believe what I heard and kept asking her to repeat herself. I ran outside of the house and screamed because my emotional pain became so hard that my stomach felt like it was tied in strong ropes and I was ripping apart, I was devastated because my only brother was gone, I didn’t know if I would ever see him again, I did not even have a chance to say goodbye. I was angry at myself, at the people that took him. Life seemed impossible to live during the days he was kidnapped. My family finally came up with the ransom the kidnapers were asking for and through a miracle…

The Dominican Republic, known for its beautiful beaches and balmy weather, was the last place I ever imagined I would find myself in this past summer vacation. On this week long trip, it wasn't for the warm ocean waves or the traditional Dominican cuisine I was called to, I was called to serve the beautiful Dominican people. On the third day of the trip, instead of heading out to the worksite where we had been pouring the concrete footers of a plastics and water filter factory, I opted to travel with a group to the childrens' cancer ward in Santiago and visit the patients. We started out our visit by performing a few dances we had taught our vacation bible school and handing out fun little gift we had brought with us. We played ball with some…

The year I turned six, my mom decided to migrate to Mexico. However, she was not able bring my one year old sister along. While my little sister stayed with my grandparents, my mom and I flied out to Mexico. I still remember the feeling in my stomach the moment I stepped out of that airport. I was an ocean away from my hometown. My first day of school was chaos. Everyone in the school was speaking in Spanish. I did not understand the customs and mannerisms. It was difficult to not feel as an outcast. The most complicated part was expressing my feelings, and my needs to the teachers. I lived in Mexico, Tijuana for six years, after becoming adapted to the environment, my mom came home one day and told me that we are moving to the United States.…

Today is one of those rare days in which it is raining and I’m sitting on the windowsill waiting for a sign. Something that says ‘move on’. There is still a part of me that hopes every day that you're alive and I haven't found you yet. I will have searched the far corners of the earth before I let myself believe you dead. I dream of you every night, then wake with the bitter taste of regret fresh in my mouth. You abandoned me. You have marooned me on this earth, and it is dark without your light by my side. All that fills my mind is when you were still beside me. I distinctly recall one summer when we were not quite children anymore and still too young to be adults. It was raining so hard that the streets were flooded for the first time in eighty years, and you had insisted on escaping to the desert.…

The ancient Aztec civilization, considered one of the greater empires to have ever existed, was a society rich in practice and belief. Death among the Aztec was an integral part of their culture, and one could say it ruled over many of their more deep-rooted beliefs. There are several points I will bring up in an attempt to educate and prove to the reader that this is quite evident in this great civilization’s history. To begin, I will develop a brief history of the Aztec to give the reader a better understanding of their culture. Then I will include several main points about the Aztec’s beliefs about death which I believe to be relevant, including the importance of human and blood sacrifices, the Aztec obsession with time, basic burial practices, and the Aztec concept of the afterlife.…

Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, a place where tourists come from all over the country to enjoy the sun, the beaches, the islands, and the coral reefs. Puerto La Cruz was a getaway for a lot of people, just some place to go on vacations and have a good time, but for me it was my home. The spring of 2014, by that time every morning when you walk outside your house you can feel the sea breeze and even when it’s cold, you close your eyes and smile, because it warms your heart. Now if I close my eyes, all I can do it’s relive that moment over and over again. The moment when only six words coming from my mom’s mouth felt like a thousand knives in my heart and changed my life forever. “We’re moving to the United States”.…

Gabriel Garcia Marquez displayed the role of religion as an important figure in the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold . In the novel, the society’s most important religion is Catholicism. A woman’s virginity needs to be keeped until she is married. This is an important belief to people who are Catholic. Marquez knows that Latin American communities stress church a lot and he displayed that in his novel . Marquez displays this by the extreme preparations the society made for the bishop’s visit to the town. For example, the society knew the bishop did not get off the boat many years prior, but assume the bishop was going to get off the boat this year. Marquez strongly displayed Catholicism when it was discovered that Angela Vicario’s was not…
