The townsfolk, still waiting for my response, started to get nervous. Murmurs started spreading throughout the crowd, and some people started to leave. I stood, frozen. Ben Lightfoot walked up to me, and started to speak.
“What's wrong? It's not like you to fall silent, especially at a time like this.”
“I don't feel right,” I responded. “I don't know if letting Edward leave is a good or bad thing.”
Ben looked disgusted. He shot me a look, and started walking away, toward the diner again. As I watched him leave, I slowly got down …show more content…
from the bench, and stared at the sky. The grey, cloudy sky seemed eternal, and never changed. I walked away from the park, and started looking around the town. As I did, I noticed how no one complained about their life of abnormality. That's when an unexpected visitor came. A white furred dog came, seemingly as the new gatekeeper. This happened often, a new one occurring after each traveler left the town. This one, however, stared at me with a different look in their eyes. The other gatekeepers looked at all of the townsfolk with anger, but this one looked at me with hope. That's when I thought of something new. Something I didn't dare try after I was bitten. I reached my hand out, and called to it. The new gatekeeper, not snarling, walked up to me, and licked my hand. Amazed, I stroked the top of its head, and walked to my apartment. However, the new dog followed him.
“I'll call you Renata,” I said to it. “For redemption.”
Feeling different, I started to pack my bags, wanting to leave the town, as I had a long time ago. I didn't know what caused this feeling, nor gave me the ability to leave the town, but I didn't miss a beat, and left my apartment with a large suitcase in my arms. As Renata and I started leaving, we passed the diner, and Ben was standing in front of me. I tried to talk to him, but it seemed like he had a different look in his eyes. He seemed… different than before. Not the same Ben I knew.
“What do you want, Ben?” I started reaching forward to tap his shoulder.
Suddenly he grabbed my arm, slowly using more and more force, not speaking. I quickly tore my hand away. Then, he spoke.
“At least stay a while,” he said. “A few days at least.”
I stopped in my tracks.
That's exactly what I said to Edward when he was able to leave. What is happening to these townsfolk? Renata started to snarl, but I held out a hand to stop her. Then, I took a small step, and used all of my force to shove Ben, focusing my hands on his chest, causing him to fall. Using this opportunity, I started to break out in a slight sprint. All of this seemed familiar to me. Behind me and Renata were the townsfolk, trying to prevent me from leaving. Desperate, I used all of my effort, and finally reached the border, where the townsfolk were left just standing there due to their unfortunate trance they were unaware of. Finally safe, I looked at Renata, who was out of breath. I reached down to pet her, and started to walk down the road, hoping to meet Edward once more to thank him for
everything.
