Personal Narrative Essay
Throughout my entire life I would have never imagined ever having to deal with the loss of someone so close to me. My worse fear was something devastating happening and me not being able to deal with it. I always assumed, which is kind of crazy that my family members were immortal and would live forever, however on this particular day in January my life came to a screeching halt and I was changed forever.
It all started a few months ago when my granny begin to get sick. She went from being totally independent and doing things all on her own with no help to being dependent and not even being able to get dressed by herself. My grannyr was a person who rarely asked for help so when she begin to get into her falling spells and not being able to pick herself up we knew something was wrong. With her being diabetic we constantly had her monitored because her glycemic levels were always dropping causing her to have convulsions and become unresponsive. She was always back and forth at the emergency room because of it. She had begun to fall so much that this last time she fell and broke her arm in two places. We decided to have her put in the hospital to be monitored and to have her evaluated. Her doctors and my mom decided after her surgery that she would be put in the nursing home for ninety days for rehabilitation, my grandmother was fine with their decision.
It was a very chilling Thursday and I had plans to go see her because that was my day off and it had been a few days since I’d last seen her. As I was lying in bed about to get up my phone rang and it was my mom, when I answered I could hear her crying and through the tears she said that I needed to get up, get dressed and get to the nursing home because my granny’s heart had stopped. The entire drive to the nursing home I’m thinking to myself this cannot be happening right now, this all has to be a dream, she has to be ok, she can’t be leaving me, everything is going to be fine. Upon my arrival at the nursing home

I felt this sense of fear, but I knew it was just nervousness. It caused my whole body to tremble. I creeped onto the field and pass by the fifty girls and all of the coaches. Just me walking by everyone gave me this ginormous knot in my stomach, it made me feel like I was going to pass out right on the field. I was breathing heavy, like I just ran a marathon. I was beyond nervous just to be the new girl on the field. I was scared of what the girls thought of me, and how the coaches thought I would play and adapt to the sport. I had never even picked up a lacrosse stick and the girls were passing, catching and shooting on goal: how does a new player get to there if they were two week late into the season? I was terrified I would never get to the level of the rest of the team.…

Since I was a little kid she had been a constant in my life. Every holiday, every family reunion, every birthday, she would always be present. At family reunions, she would be engaged in conversation at the daily breakfasts and dinners, at every birthday party she would be there when the presents were opened and the cake was eaten. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, she would always bring her famous deviled eggs and would be playing with the children. Near the end she would almost always be asleep and covered in blankets on the couch, until her family needed her. But perhaps the strongest memory I have of her was only between us. Our family was visiting Stillwater for the day, for what reason I can’t remember. Being young at the time I was always excited to have a ride in my grandparents’ van, especially if she was there. We were sitting in the very back, and she was talking to me about something which I only now see the profoundness of: her own mortality. She told me she wanted to live to see me graduate high school, a dream which she wouldn’t live to see to fruition. In telling me this I realize now that she was confiding in me her fear of death, a fear which at the time I had no concept…

I remember the first time I created art. I was seven years old and I was already in the midst of learning about myself. The pencil crayons felt like paint brushes as I let my inner artist run wild. I felt like Matisse himself even though I had no idea who that was at the time. I drew a rose and an off-coloured clownfish that looked more like Tiger. Although the things I drew had no significance, the idea of creating something captivated me ever since. I practiced baking to settle my need for creation and ended up falling in love with the hobby; baking is what fulfilled my need for creation and decoration. I still satisfy my need for art by occasionally visiting the Art Gallery of Ontario or drawing silly sketches the on scrap pieces of paper…

Over the past four years of high school, I have seen growth in my essay, like most anyone would. My weaknesses are and continue to be word choice and syntax, however, it is not as bad as it used to be and I persist to improve on it every essay I write. My strengths encompass a compelling grabber and an effective use of transitions. I still have masses to improve on in my writing, but it has come a long way from what it once was.…

I grew up in a household consumed by sports. At a young age my father drilled things like ESPN, football, and elbow pads into me and my brother’s heads. Both of my brothers were naturally gifted in athletics. I on the other hand, was not. I couldn’t catch a football, run a lap, or shoot a basket to save my life. When seventh grade rolled around I made a deal with my dad that if I got a part in the spring production I could quit sports altogether. That year the play was “Cinderella” and I was nervous because I had never auditioned for anything ever in my life, but there was no way in hell I was going back to neck injuries and smelly jockstraps. I took a deep breath, walked onto the stage and gave it my best shot. The next day I found out that…

I had to tell her my name six-seven times and it hurt every time. She lived everyday to the fullest walks, walks that she had been doing for years, sometimes she couldn’t remember where she was and we would have to go find her. Before I left I ask my cousins and my mother to keep an eye on my…
