When I entered Hopkins, the demographic was very different from what I was used to. Coming from Miami I was accustomed to a very prominent Hispanic community. However only about 10% of my fellow incoming freshmen where Hispanic. I soon befriended several students, and we began to converse about our Hispanic culture. After my initial training, last Spring, I began assisting in a particularly challenging neuroprotectant drug screen project. The supervising post-doctoral fellow was away visiting her family in Turkey. As a result of my diligent work ethic and intellectual curiosity, I earned the trust of my PI and was tasked with continuing her work in her absence. During this time Turkey underwent a political upheaval which delayed her return. Throughout the summer I continued her work and successfully completed the second screening of a 1,000-drug library. Since then, I have performed various experiments for different projects, compiled detailed reports and given presentations not only to our lab, but also to Bayer Pharmaceutical and at regional seminars. I am currently helping write several articles that will soon be submitted for publication.
This past semester I began volunteering at the Baltimore Rescue Mission helping Dr. Dalton diagnose and treat homeless patients.
