Harmony Hall Reflection
Over the summer of 2015, I volunteered at Harmony Hall in Bassett, Virginia. Harmony Hall is a nursing home for the elderly. I had heard about this agency during the last couple of months in my senior year in high school from my friend, Kanan Patel. She had volunteered during the winter of 2014 and she instantly fell in love with the mission, the staff, and the residents. When looking for a place to volunteer, I came to her for references, and she quickly directed me to Harmony Hall. I began working with this agency the following summer.

The day was July 10th 2016, and my mission for this day was to help an elderly woman learn how to use her new cell phone. She had recently received this iPhone as a gift for her birthday from her daughter.

Luckily, I picked up on these actions and changed them as quickly. The issue that I was facing was that I was not leveling with the woman. I was looking at the situation through my eyes rather than hers, and because of this I allowed myself to become agitated with her repeated questions. I had to realize that her memory loss was a condition that she could not control. After I regained my composure, I changed my tone of voice and altered my approach. I decided to act like I had forgotten to tell her about a certain feature if she asked the same question twice. For example, if she asked me how to launch Facebook a second time, I would respond, “Oh yea! I completely forgot to tell you about that!” Using this technique, I was able to control my emotions while repeating myself. I also tried singing the instructions to her to see if she could remember more that way, but I had no luck. I am aware that learning is unique to the person, so I tried every possible technique that I could think of on the spot. Although I was unable to find a specific technique to help her remember the instructions, I did notice an increase in happiness after I changed my …show more content…
I was getting agitated by her questions because I looked at the situation through a first person point of view. This view allowed me to understand the resident’s situation, but not put myself into the situation she was facing. I quickly learned the importance of the “Person-in-Environment” approach because as soon as I related to her situation, the atmosphere in the room completely changed. Other than learning the significance of this approach, I also learned the importance of effective communication while talking to the resident. As DeVito noted in The Interpersonal Communication Book, communication, of any kind, serves to teach, relate, influence, play, and most importantly, help. I want to continue to have valuable conversations with people to not only help them, but help myself in learning effective skills within communication. I intend to push myself further and allow myself to volunteer in any agency that has an opening. The best way to learn more about how you can help others is through knowledge and experience, so I want to continue to build my resume in different areas to insure future

My children and I volunteered to help set up the facility for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. The day before Thanksgiving we drove to downtown Atlanta to the Georgia World Congress and Convention Center. We were amazed by the number of volunteers already there. There were people from all walks of life, executives, athletes, clergy, housewives and fathers, and even some people who were clearly in need themselves.…

Throughout my life, I have dedicated myself to act selflessly and always attempt to best represent my community. The Larner COM commitment to service aligns with my philanthropic views of healthcare. In my experience volunteering at a local homeless clinic, we ask each patient: “If you could not have come here, where would you have gone?” Many patients’ answer is nowhere. The involvement that students maintain in the local Community Health Center of Burlington provides an opportunity to work with populations similar to those I have assist in Colorado.…

“Fundamental and vital to all health care managerial functions, communication is a means of transmitting information and making oneself understood by others” (Borkowski, 2015, P. 79). It is clear that communication is a major issue in this case. Performance of an employee depends on his or her ability to effectively interact with the superiors, co-workers within the organization. Interpersonal skill is therefore an important aspect of communication. It can be defined as the “process whereby the individual implements a set of goal-directed, inter-related situationally appropriate social behavior which are learned and controlled” (Berry, 2006, p. 13). There was a very poor impersonal communication between Lawanda and her co-worker in the ICU.…

For my first service project, I went to the Euclid Adult Activity Center. Prior to working there, I felt excited to try something new. I did not know what it was going to be like and what I was going to experience. The EAAC is located on East 191st St in Cleveland. This is a place that lets the elderly in the community participate with each other. They can get out of their house for some time and exercise. They also get to talk to children and teens. Their mission statement is to support and empower people to live, learn, and work in the community. I served the elderly that were able to attend and have some fun. They were all so nice and caring. They wanted to know about me and my life. The patients face challenges by not interacting enough…

In a supervision session I supported Jean, a care worker, who was finding it difficult to focus on her work because of difficulties she was experiencing at home. Although we had agreed an agenda for this meeting beforehand, when Jean came into the room she was very agitated and immediately raised the subject of her home situation. I felt that it would be impossible to progress with other issues until we had discussed this and looked at how it was affecting her. Although I appreciated myself that this was not a counselling but a work supervision situation, I was able to use some of the communication skills that I had…

I spent most of my time in my dorm sitting with my door open so residents would feel comfortable enough to come in and talk with me. I helped my residents however I could rather it meant looking over papers, being a shoulder to cry on, or calling someone for professional help. I also was a New Visions Law student, while I was in high school, and through the program I was allowed to intern in a range of law departments. One of which was the Department of Social Services where I was able to meet some of the children living in the foster system. It broke my heart to hear some of the stories that these children had to tell, some of which were only six years old.…

HFHC serves patients that are below the 200% Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Patients below 133% FPL are Medicaid eligible, yet there are still others within the community that need access to affordable health care. Within our patient base, there are people who work full time, yet are below the 200% FPL. These people fall under the ALICE threshold, which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, meaning that these people are working, yet are still struggling to make ends meet.…

As my high school career comes to a close, I have had some incredible experiences inside the hallways and classrooms at Smithville. I was blessed to have some amazing teachers who made sure I understood everything I was being taught to helping me through in some tough times in life. No matter the issue, problem, or if I just wanted to talk, the teachers at SHS were always there to listen. Our faculty really proved the point of caring for the students who walked the hallways of SHS and really trying to get to know them as people, not just students.…

The first clinical placement for my first semester of bachelor of nursing was in an old age home. In the old age home, my colleague and I had to take an interview with one elderly lady. We started talking to Mrs. X who is 88 years old. Mrs. X began sharing her experience with us. While talking, I found that my colleague was very much confident than me. She was responding Mrs. X with words and was asking questions whereas I was just smiling. Then, Mrs. X. asked me if I understood the meaning of the word that they were talking. I was very embarrassed because I had no idea about that term. During interview, it was sometimes difficult for Mrs. X to understand my accent so I asked my colleague to repeat the question. Also, Mrs. X seemed as if she felt awkward to answer question about her mental health.…

As I mentioned, at the on-set of the program, I was working in the non-profit sector, at the Kansas City Free Health Clinic. I was not married then, and was able to dedicate all of my time to work and school. I felt a huge sense of pride in the work we were doing at the Clinic. As the second-oldest free clinic in North America, the history is impressive and the patient’s stories are nearly unbelievable. The Clinic was my first exposure to the idea of public service; the idea that working toward a mission meant more than the bottom line in the financial statement.…
