and I will give it to you,” said the magical lake. Grace could not believe that the lake just spoke to her. She couldn't even imagine why it is asking her what super power she wants. “Magical lake…? I want the powers of super speed, please,” said Grace. Just like that Grace was no longer a normal teenager. Grace used her super speed the rest of the way home. She thought of all the possible ways her power would come in handy. She could get to school in two seconds, she could race her brother and win every time and she could be the first one done in gym. When Grace got to her driveway she looked up at the sky. It was very dark and cloudy. The tornado sirens started shouting, the wind started blowing and Grace could barely walk to her front door. Grace went inside and turned on the television. “Breaking news...a huge tornado from the north, is headed right for Smithville! Evacuate and head to safety!” blared the television. Grace dashed to get some extra food and clothes, wrote a quick note telling her parents she is going to Florida to visit her Aunt Clara, picked up her dog Chevy and darted out her front door.
Grace and Chevy sprinted to get away from Smithville as fast as they could. The wind had already picked up in speed by 10 miles per hour. Grace knew right away that this was going to be a huge storm. Grace had to guide Chevy or else he would have been blown away from the wind. The wind was howling and it started to hurt Grace’s ears. The huge gray clouds let out all the rain they had been holding in. Grace and Chevy were drenched and shivering within minutes of the first raindrop. Grace didn’t know which way she and Chevy needed to go. All Grace knew was she needed to find a place to go where she and Chevy would be safe from the tornado. Grace and Chevy started to go towards the south, away from the tornado.
They trekked and they traveled down to the south until they reached Tennessee. Grace and Chevy stopped for a quick snack and some water. They didn't have a lot of food with them so Grace ate half of a peanut butter protein bar and gave the other half to Chevy. When they finished their snack, they got back up and kept walking. Everything was fine until Grace heard a weird noise. “It sounds like some kind of wild animal,” Grace said to Chevy. “Hopefully it will leave us alone if we leave it alone.”
Unfortunately, that was not the case in this situation. Less than a minute later Grace turned around and saw a huge pack of coyotes chasing after her and Chevy. She didn’t know what to do. Should she run? Hide? Fight? Grace knew she had to do something and she had to do it fast.
Then Chevy started barking really loud. He was barking so loud that Grace realized that he was scaring away the coyotes. Grace couldn’t believe it. Her little cocker spaniel just scared away a huge pack of coyotes by barking at them. Grace was very thankful she brought along Chevy. Grace and Chevy barely survived the coyote chase. Grace didn’t realize how difficult it was going to be to find a safe place.
Grace and Chevy woke up the next morning starving.
Grace had some Cheez-Its and shared some with Chevy. They packed up all of their things and went off to find a safe place away from the storm. After almost a full day of walking Grace and Chevy made it out of Tennessee and into the state of Georgia. Grace got really excited because she knew that they were almost to Florida. Grace and Chevy walked some more. Eventually they ran into a ginormous swamp. “There has to be a way around it,” said Grace. “I don’t know how to get across it.” Chevy walked away from Grace. “Chevy! Where are you going?” yelled Grace. Grace didn’t understand where Chevy was going, so she followed him. Grace saw that Chevy was headed towards a tree that had been cut down. Chevy walked right across the tree and got to the other side of the swamp like it was no big deal. Grace was amazed. She would have never thought of going across the tree to get to the other side of the
swamp.
After walking for about three more hours Grace and Chevy finally made it to Aunt Clara’s house. It was nice and sunny. There were no dangerously high winds and no rain. It was a perfect place to get away from the tornado. Aunt Clara asked how the journey to Florida went. “It was very interesting and we encountered a lot of different challenges. Chevy rescued us from a pack of wild coyotes and he found a very safe way to get across a ginormous swamp,” responded Grace. “Sounds like a lot of stuff happened. Did you learn from any of this?” asked Aunt Clara. “Yes, I certainly did,” Grace said. “I learned that as long as Chevy and I trust each other and work together we are unstoppable.”
In the end, Grace decided that Chevy and her should go on an another adventure together just for fun since they had so much fun traveling to Florida. Aunt Clara thought it was a great idea for Grace and Chevy to travel together more. It will bring them closer and it will teach them a lot of life lessons. Grace packed up their stuff. Then she and Chevy started heading right back to little old Smithville.
