Personal Narrative Essay: The Value Of A Basketball Team
Basketball is probably my favorite sport to be in. This is not because of the actual game as much as being part of a team so close, we were almost like brothers. I had originally joined basketball in 6th grade to make friends and have fun. That is what it was like during that grade. When 7th grade rolled along, the 7th and 8th grade is one team and we would go to each other's games, things started to get serious. We loved our coach, he pushed us hard to be good players but at the end of the day, we were like a big family. We were a Lutheran school but we were good. We had won a lot of state and national tournaments, in the private school division, in the past but we were not cocky about it. That year has been a particularly tough season. We had conflict and a few of our players, our friends, left. Our coach, Coach Ulrich had broken one of the discs in his back and can’t move around very well. Right before state, one of our best players, Greg, sprained his ankle and can not play as well and needs a lot of bench time. Our rival team played a dirty trick and ended up winning the very close semifinals in state. Nationals has been harder than normal, we lost to a good team right off the bat, who we might have been able to beat otherwise, and we were put into the ladder which is always harder. Here we are in the …show more content…
They were all crying as they walked off of the court. We were about to play the same school as the girls and much of the audience was the same. When we went out on the court we had mixed emotions of anger, grief, disbelief and were just emotionally unstable. We were just not ready. The entire game was a mix of emotions and sloppy playing. We lost the game by over 20 points. The opposing team’s audience was screaming and rejoicing. Everyone immediately felt bitterness towards them. When we went down to say good game to the other team like every game, they were happy but knew something was

New studies and tests are showing that when it comes to music and colors our brains think more like each other then we ever knew before. When the music is high tempo and a faster pace most people relate this to a brighter yellow color, but when the music is a little darker and slower they relate to a grayish-bluish hue. “So Mozart's jaunty Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major tends to be associated with bright yellow and orange, whereas his dour Requiem in D minor is more likely to be linked to dark, bluish gray.” It is amazing to see the kinds of discoveries they are able to make my just simple recognition.…

When I first arrived at Rotunda D I thought to myself great I get to stand the whole time because there is not one open seat. Dean Nickels started the event off by introducing Scott Naggy, head boys basketball coach. Naggy then talked a little about how they recruit players for South Dakota State University. He then introduced two of his players. The first was from the West side of Chicago, he talked about how he would play basketball to escape from the hardships of growing up in West Chicago. The second player was from Michigan, he explained how basketball was the main sport played in that area. He explained how the teachers there didn't care how the students do in there class they will just pass them to get rid of them. He…

“What are you guys doing here?” I asked them and they just stared at KD and me. The stares started to get awkward and we were just standing there so KD passed the ball and told them to check it up. I was guarding Trey burke, point guard for the Utah Jazz and a former Michigan Wolverine so you already know I had to ball up on a fellow Michigan fan. I started off guarding him, but it was so hard! As soon as he got passed the ball he drove to the basket pushing me out of the way with ease and scored an easy bucket. “Can I get a foul?” I asked in disbelieve. They just rechecked the ball and we played on. The next play KD was defending Exum and got a steal off a pass that he tried to throw to Trey, he sprinted to the rim and drew both of them in so he kicked it out to me and I was wide open for a jump shot, I pulled up and knocked it down from downtown! The score was 3-2 with KD and I in the lead, I checked the ball and called for a screen, KD came up and set a nice screen that got my defender completely stuck, I took the opportunity and drove in for quick layup. The score was 5-2 with us in the lead still. After a few plays the score was 8-8, a tie game, I checked the ball and dribbled to the corner, "Screen, screen!" I yelled as KD came up for one, I went the other way tricking Trey and I headed for the basket but Exum wasn't having it this…

Our second game was against the former coach for UNA, Jason Anderson. Coach Anderson was the original coach who offered me a scholarship to UNA. The tension was high, due to familiar faces. We ended up having to play them twice and we beat them both times. After winning all four games we reached the Championship series. Humbolt, from New York, was our biggest obstacle we had to face. The team with the best two out of three wins was to be named the National Champs. The first game we played, we lost to Humbolt. The loss hit us hard and our spirits were down. All season we had not faced a pitcher that shut us down completely. Walking to the locker room after that loss, felt as if we had already became runner up in the Championship series. Beating Humbolt twice the next day, seemed to be an impossible task. We sat in silence as tears ran down our faces. Our coaches let us cry and let us get our emotions out. She knew the pressure we felt and the adversity that was staring us in the face. After 30 minutes of silence, one of the players brought up the games we had to play against UAH. Another player mentioned the victory against Valdosta, and we were instantly reminded that we were capable of anything. We knew that all of the hard work we had put in was not going to waste. We were not going to settle for anything else but a National…

The first game of the intramural season had hype behind it because part of the lacrosse team was playing another team full of lacrosse players. We started our warm ups more organized then I thought, when we did lay up lines and practiced pull up jump shots. One thing you should know about me and basketball is I take it extremely seriously. In fact in all sports I’m an intense competitor. The game started off pretty slow, because both teams weren’t shooting very well. We were down 5 to 2 when I hit a 3 pointer to tie the game 5 to 5. The game was intense, due to my lacrosse teammate Kyle Coats had his shooting sleeve on and was laying the ball up like it was no ones business. My team responded to every punch though and with the time running out in the…

I was an eight year old kid when I had my first ever glimpse of the NBA Basketball. It was a lanky afro manchild doing a reverse dunk versus Indiana right in front of the Laker crowd. Crowd was in awe, Commentators were ecstatic and Kevin Harlan in his usual voice saying, Kobe can’t be denied. That day, my love affair with the Los Angeles Lakers started.…

When the season began, we did not have a coach to lead us, so we practiced apace with the Varsity squad. A few weeks into the season, the Varsity coach found us a mentor that would lead us. As a few more weeks went by, our coach started picking up on more activities, which was too much for her to handle so she left, and we were once again without a coach. The team began to fall apart and it became very stressful for all of us. After the first three months of cheering, we had lost 8 girls on the team. Throughout those three months, my…

On January 26th, I made a huge error in my basketball game against West Central. To anybody else, that game might have seemed unimportant- insignificant really. They were not a conference rival or a sectional team. To me however, this game was very significant because I used to attend that school. At that game, I played all of my friends from kindergarten to fifth grade. I hoped that I didn’t make a fool of myself. I hoped to do amazing so that all of my old friends would see what a great basketball player I had become. I hoped that I would make a play so amazing that everyone would remember it. While I would certainly not forget the play I made, it was not the spectacular one I had dreamed. My gym teacher- Mr. Prairie asked the class, “Who’s ready for the basketball game tonight against West Central,” and I wondered if I was. Because of my insistent worrying I could not manage to make a play through all of gym class (we were playing basketball)…

For as long as I remember, I have been raised with a basketball hoop. This hoop stood firmly, looking down at the trees secured by patches of cement in my backyard, in my neighborhood, Dorchester. This hoop was my center of faith and tranquility surrounded by gunfires, shattering windows, car alarms. As a girl, I learned not to adventure any place else other than this hoop because going beyond its faded lines on the concrete is an unknown world full of hazards and danger. And when I did cross these seraphic lines, I could sense the bittersweet emotions running throughout the neighborhood, my home.…

One extremely important activity outside of the classroom that has helped me grow as an individual is Church League basketball at my local YMCA. From the outside looking in this league seems to be a form of glorified pick-up basketball with referees and a scoreboard but there is so much more to it. Almost half way through my junior year my father convinced me to try out for the varsity basketball team at school in November to which I hesitated at first but later gave in and tried out only to be cut. At first I was upset because I had never been cut from a team and I was unsure of how to handle it and what to do with my free time. This prompted me to reach out to God and ask him for a sense of direction and purpose in this time of my life to which He responded with a friend inviting me to Church League basketball. Once I experienced a few scrimmages and practices I decided to commit to playing Church League and coming to all of the…

The game took place on a cold, November afternoon in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It was the last game of the tournament and we, the CBS Falcons, faced the Red Dogs in the championship game. We were confident about our chances of victory; however, our confidence was quickly put to the test when we first saw the other team. This game taught me never again to judge a book by its cover and that effort can trump skill.…

So we kinda knew we were gonna win, but we didn’t want to jinx it and lose. We had a fantastic game and won 14-1. I had a total 0 plays out in the outfield and that sure was a whole lot of fun. I went 3-4 when I was batting which is ok but I could have gone 4-4, Since I wasn’t seeing the ball out of the pitcher's hand I was late on the ball and was all in all, a bad game. Our season was doing really well and ended really poorly, It ended by us losing 9-1, We were not happy nor were we upset that we lost. but we understood we needed to get better. Whereas High school baseball is gonna be way better cause we don’t play the same teams we play easier teams. Which is nice because we will win much easier and not have any competition. The high school team consistently wins regionals which is cool and they have been to state a couple…

Growing up, I lived thirty minutes away from my school. This caused me to miss out on the after school activities all my friends were doing, such as Little Wolves basketball or cheer camp, because my only ride home left during practices. During middle school, I had moved into town where my school was only 3 minutes away instead. In seventh grade, you can start to play volleyball and basketball as an in school sport; since I'd never played before, I was too shy and scared to try out.…
