Personal Narrative: First Day At Salt Lake City
First Day at Salt Lake City

I’m on a trip with my mom to Yellowstone; our first destination is Salt Lake City, Utah’s Capital. As we walking around the city, we went to a place called Temple Square. All the tourists who came here are going there. It talks about some story of Jesus, and it looks like a church. Tomorrow, our destination is going into Yellowstone, the real journey will start tomorrow.

Back in the summer of 2013 my family was deciding on what vacation we should go on. It took us until July to finally decide where we wanted to go and we chose San Diego. At the time I didn’t know where San Diego was and frankly I thought we were going to Florida. When we got in the car and started to drive I was very confused on the fact we were not going to an airport. On the eight hour car ride there it took my family around an hour and a half to explain that we were not going to Florida.…

Mormonism has usually been described as a frontier religion. But study of the circumstances of its origins and its continuing appeal in the area which bred it suggests a different view. The church did not rise during the pioneering era of western New York. Its early recruits came from many sects, but invariably from the longest settled neighborhoods of the region. Joseph’s peregrination during the period when he was pregnant with the new religion were always eastward, not westward, from his Manchester home. The first congregations of the church formed at Manchester, Fayette in Seneca County, and Colesville in Broome County. These facts together with the realization of Mormonism’s dependence on current excitements and upon myths and doctrines built by the passage of time into the locality’s very fabric, demonstrate that the Church of the Saints was not a frontier phenomenon in origin.…

One of the oldest questions in philosophy is whether humans have free will. When I look in retrospective, my journey to Miami makes me wonder is everything predetermined. Ever since I was a kid, I had vivid dreams about a sunny beach, soft golden sand, palm’s waterfall, and beautiful girl who will love me unconditionally.…

A day in Memphis is not complete without the diversity in our community. As a second generation Memphian who has primarily lived in Midtown, I had the privilege of watching several different cultures in one place and especially now that I attended one of the largest public schools. Daily, I experience someone else’s world. The people I get to meet and see are from various backgrounds: race, religion, ethnicity, etc. that I may never comprehend, which is wonderful. In Memphis, it is normal to be an enigma, to have idiosyncrasies. I believe that is the heart of Memphis. What makes this heart surpass discrimination is the acceptance that follows years of diversity. My neighborhood has single mothers whose children play with the neighborhood adolescents.…

It all started when a few days before summer break began last year when I overheard my step-dad and uncle talking about a hiking trip in Colorado that we were going to take sometime in the month of early July. So I just let it be and was going to see and find out if I was going to go along with them. long story short, I got a really, really early Christmas present from my mom and step-dad. This past summer I volunteered to go on a mission trip to a small town on the west side of Tennessee, called Somerville. Although it isn’t traditionally a “deep south” state, this city more than fit the culture. Everyone we met had a heavy accent, drank sweet tea, ate biscuits, and went to church multiple times a week. When my group first arrived at our “resident’s” house, I wasn’t exactly pleasantly surprised. I was surprised not by the fact that she lived in a trailer home or that there was mold growing down her bathroom wall, but by how she greeted us. She was less than friendly. It could be she was embarrassed that she needed help or that she just didn’t want strangers in her house but I felt a little hurt. Every day we invited her to have lunch with us but she never accepted. I am so used to people being overly friendly because I come from a tight-knit community. When she did come out of her room and we had a chance to talk with her, she was cold and hard to relate to. Overall, I was disappointed with the experience.…

This summer I had the opportunity to visit New York City and was able to tour campus. As soon as I stepped foot on the grounds I felt at home. The quiet campus seemed like a great escape from the bustling city. All of the students I met seemed very welcoming and willing to help out new students. I've grown up in Oklahoma City and realize that moving to New York will be a big adjustment. Barnard provides the support I will need to become comfortable in this new environment. I also value how hard Barnard works to support all the women that attend. The opportunities and doors they have opened for all graduates is inspirational. I want to attend a college that is dedicated to their students. A college where women support each other instead of tearing…

I didn't fit in well as a child. I was diagnosed with adhd before I can remember. So my learning disability had been stealing confidence from me bit by bit my whole life. My husband makes me confidant. It's easier now. Until I moved in with his Mormon parents. I'm not going to lie I really just wanted them want them to like me. I am not Mormon I'm not religious at all actually. I am agnostic so I don't think entirely that the Mormon religion is wrong. I just don't know. My whole life for some reason I just thought that all people were the same in the way of not not liking people or judging them until you know them no matter there life style. At least that's how I am and in the back of my head I know that wasn't true but I just felt that way with people I knew.…

The first week in field was definitely a learning experience for me, but it was also one of the best times that I have had with children. At the beginning of the week I was nervous, thinking about my first time working with children, whether or not the children would like me, and where I would fit into the classroom, now though I’m relieved at how well I feel about field. The first day was amazing, as soon as I got there the student teachers involved me with the kids and before I knew it I was reading stories on the ground. I’ve been writing in my journal every day after I leave field and I write one feeling to sum up the day; so far I have written relieved, happy, and smiley. While there were times throughout the week where I could feel myself…

Having close to no big change in my life, moving to Seattle can't be any more exciting for me. Being born and raised in North Carolina, I've always been curious about living in a new area of the country. Ever since I visited San Francisco in sixth grade, I've been in love with the west coast. It has nothing to to do with Hollywood, celebrities, or fame. I love the vibe of the west coast. I love how liberal and progressive Washington is. The beaches and weather in California are amazing. The mountains in Oregon and Washington are to die for. While North Carolina is not only where I was born and raised, but it offers beauty and a unique culture. I love it, but I'm ready to try new things. My whole life I've lived in the same house, woken up in…
