Personal Narrative: Harleton Softball
Imagine looking forward to just one thing all year, and that one thing got ruined. That is how I felt about this game. It completely crushed me. The Harleton softball game has shaped me because of the build up, the people around me, and how I felt during the game.
The build up all started on the first day of softball practice. Right as I walked through the dugout door the softball team started talking about Harleton. One of my teammates was talking about Harleton’s pitcher, “Have y’all heard that RC is committed to Texas A&M? She is so good!”
Another said, “Harleton is not even worried about us this year. They think they are going to beat us ten to zero! Can you believe that? I am so nervous!”
“They are just trying to get into our heads early

I couldn’t believe people were already talking about it so early in the season. Little did I know, not all of the talk was positive. Some of our so called “fans” had no faith in us. I saw comments the completely broke my heart that was posted on social media. Horrible comments like, “Beckville does not have a chance against RC. She is just too good.” One comment really hurt me deep and it was said to my face by someone I thought was one hundred percent for us. Someone that is supposed to support the team no matter what. He said, “Y’all just can’t do what RC does. There is no way we will hit against her. She is too good.” When I heard this come out of my coaches mouth, my confidence level went from a ten all the way to a five. I was in complete shock at what I had just heard. I was enraged! I have never been so mad in my entire life. What kind of coach can sit there and tell his players that he has no confidence in them? The whole team was down after that. At practice the next day nobody said anything. Nothing about their day, or about their school work, and especially not about Harleton. We were all still in shock at what we heard out of our coach’s

“I don’t know if I’ve ever been a part of something like that,” Mountaineers' head coach Randy Mazey said. “They were throwing pitchers that haven’t pitched much for them and our at-bats were just awful today. If you were to talk to Kansas’ coaches, and say ‘what do you have on the Mountaineers?’ They’d say ‘that’s a good hitting team, those guys can really hit.’ You talk to Canisius’ coaches about the Mountaineers, and they’d say the exact opposite. Now we just have to go figure it out.”…

Everybody from the team was there at the field. If you looked at our team you might think that we were just a bunch of small town screw-offs. We definitely gave the other team that impression as we warmed up. Our team didn’t take things too seriously. In the batting cages, we practiced our home run swings, and trots. The infielders, including me, bare handed the ground balls hit to us by one of the coaches, and jump threw the ball back to the first baseman pretending we were young Derek Jeters. The outfield dove at every ball that was hit at them. Even if the ball was coming straight at them, they ran back and come forward again so they could dive and get the ball. Yes, we were a bunch of…

But he noticed that their was arguing confusion about plays and no communication whatsoever. After practice he took his whole team before their first game to a park where they can all just chill and talk among each other well. It didn't work quite as the coach would of hoped there was a lot of arguing on who would pee where so the coach was furious and told the dog pound team to sleep on it in the morning he was hoping for a better day and for his team to play amazing well that didn't happen their first game in the stadium they lost twelve to zero they had twenty chances to score but they didn't due to the miscommunication; they were a joke. After the coach had enough of this. He took every single of his players and talked them not one on one not just one part of them he talked to the as a group but the whole team he said “Look you guys are not giving it your all I know all of you guys can play way better than what your showing if you guys really want a life and want to get adopted work as a team and play hard.” With losing their first game the team wasn't in the best shape and with them taking on the best team in the nation tomorrow they needed to be ready like never…

Without having the well-known reputation in the league, we all would have been less willing to go the extra mile and do their part everyday. As the spring season at Taft brings a lot of fun and stressful things on the community, softball was one that had positive impacts on me. It helped me to achieve a better understanding on effort, and how you should repeatedly strive to exceed what people think is your best.…

By playing on this team, I have learned how to approach others, to bond over a certain topic, and eventually make friends. The friends I made on this team are forever friends, meaning I will always remember them and remember what they have done to help me. Among teaching myself about their own college experiences and what to (and not to) worry about when time comes they helped me realize what I want out of life, and what I want is adventure. The weekend of the Dawg Daze tournament, although intended for us to do well during softball games, we learned to come together as a team when we arrived at the Cedar Point Amusement Park. To learn who your teammates are outside of sports is really important to help bond as a team. Aspirations and dreams of the girls I spent a majority of my summer with helps me understand how different people are, that the…

At the age of 3, I picked up this yellow ball and threw it back to my dad. On this day, I never imagined that, that very ball would soon become my family, my life, and my happiness. Soon softball would become the only thing that never changed for me. Friends have come and gone but I knew that one thing would always be there. I could always count on the game to change my mood to something better. Traveling, making friends, and playing the game I loved would soon take over my weekends and soon became something I would play every day for over 5 years. Every little kids dreams about making it to the big leagues or playing in college. I too had those aspirations. Naturally, I was handed the opportunity to play college softball here at Mayville State. I took it of course. However, my first month of college was a whirlwind. My life had changed, I no longer had my mom to hold my hand and give me a pep talk after a bad day, or my dad to tell me to get better. My head was no longer in the right place. I was put on a team with people who were better than me for the first time in my life. I no longer was looked as one of the best…
