On this day, my grandfather bought me my favorite video game and on our way home we bought some foodstuff, which we later distributed to slum dwellers behind our house in Vadodara, India. My move from India affected me as I was thrust into a new cultural environment. India is a highly conservative culture where traditional customs determine most things, including relationships developed outside the family set-up. On the other hand, the United States has a more liberal culture permeating different things including increased social interaction. I had to make a decision as to remain chained to my conservative Indian culture or embrace the American culture, which was my new home.
I was confused, but the experiences I had in college and outside helped me find my identity. I resolved to be proud of my Indian and American heritage. Both these cultures would guide me through the path of life, bringing success along the way. I have grown tremendously by accepting my multicultural identity to befit the melting pot of cultures. Through volunteering, I have interacted with different individuals who have taught me a thing or two about their cultures helping understand and appreciate diverse
