Personal Narrative: How My Mom Changed My Life
My mom has multiple sclerosis. Having been diagnosed with the disease almost eighteen years ago, my mother has never been healthy in the time that I can remember her. Because of this, I have been accustomed to a different childhood than a majority of my friends. There were a lot of things that I didn’t do with my mom as a child that many other families do. We did a lot of traveling when we were younger, but we stopped taking trips after I was seven years old. Although my aunt and uncle always stepped in to take us on camping trips or to go hiking or skiing, every time we went I missed my mom and I wished that she were there with me. My mom always felt really tired when she came home after a long days work, so she never planned big, elaborate birthday parties or family events. She didn’t attend my junior high commencement because she couldn’t walk through the venue or stand for too long. Despite my mom’s fatigue and inabilities, I had an amazing childhood. Even though I may not have had similar experiences to my friends, my mom and I created unique traditions that I can’t wait to pass down to my own children someday. We started doing scrabble tournaments when I was eight because my mom has always had an affinity for words. To this day, we still clear time once a week for her to cream me in that intense crossword game. On top …show more content…
It’s just as special for me to come home and show her the hundreds of pictures I took of every inch of every building and room and gush about the classes or the people or the scenery or the professors. Even though I didn’t have the same kind of childhood as my friends, I don’t think I’ve missed out on anything. Instead, I think that my unique circumstances have only allowed me to grow into a kinder and more patient person than I ever thought

My mother got really sick for about a week and could barely even stand up. Since she was not able to, I played the mother's role and it was challenging. One challenge I needed to face was looking after my little sister. I fed her, changed her clothes, helped her with her homework, made her feel better when she was upset, and put her to bed. I was also supposed to help my brother with his homework and make his breakfast, but he was not as challenging because he is older and more mature. In addition to all that, did my chores and took care of my mother. I was very busy and overwhelmed taking care of my siblings, mother, and myself. That week of playing an adult’s role made me realize how grateful I am to have a mother who takes care of me in the same way I took care of…

When it comes to school, I guess you could say that my mom was a bit of a nerd. She was extremely smart and exceeded in every class. She went to a Catholic school until fourth grade. She said, about this school, “Not much happened here, I was placed in Reading and Math groups by myself, and no, I was never hit with rulers over the knuckles by the nuns, if you were wondering.” In middle school, she was placed in an advanced class and by the time she left she was finished with all her required high school math classes. She was also inducted into the National Junior Honor Society where she held the office of Secretary. In high school, since she was a big nerd, she took college level math courses and AP in all other classes. She also played…

I’ve been told the impact of a parent’s passing can carry on for years or forever. I was my mother’s primary care giver for two years. In her last four months, along with hospice, I took care of her full time along with maintaining my full time job. She passed in her home surrounded by me and my other two siblings in January. Just three months later my dad, who was not married to my mom, died unexpectedly in his sleep. I am still in the tender times of grief from my mother’s and father’s deaths. Who would think I could fathom writing about such a sorrowful time in addition to writing about the lessons I learned from my mother’s last months and the graceful way she left this earth. I relive this not only because it is kind of…

I didn’t know heartbreak until June 28, when my dad told me that he had stage 4 cancer. I didn’t know fear until August 13, when I found out that he would have to undergo radiation to combat a tumor in his brain. I didn’t know weariness until August 24, when everyone at school talked about how great their summer had been, and I had to lie and say that mine had been fine. I didn’t know how deep my love for my dad ran until June 29, when I wiped away my tears, stood a little straighter, and vowed to help him find little rays of light in even the worst days.…

My mother’s parents would always share stories with us about how their parents came to America from Italy and Germany. They would bring out old photo albums and tell us all about how different life was for them and how they held on to family cooking recipes and every Christmas we make the same dishes that their parents would make. My father’s parents would also share stories about Ireland and my grandpa would talk about what he experienced when he was in the war. Unlike the family I interviewed, I was brought up in a Christian household. Every Sunday the whole family would attend church together and then go out to eat after to talk about what we had learned. We would also pray every night before bed and were always told to give thanks throughout the day for the life we have been blessed with.…

“I’ll never become rich doing this, but it’s what I love,” she said. She refers to a woman who essentially changed my life, Corinna Sowers-Adler. A mentor, a teacher, a director, and a friend who I’ve only come to know for a little less than a year now. This refers to the wonderful world I hope to be immersed in for the rest of my life, theatre. Corinna and I were conversing on our way to Starbucks with the rest of my new theatre family, Gaslamp Academy of Performing Arts, a program I had just enrolled in for the summer. I replied with an answer I now have a better understanding for, “Well… you’re rich in so many different ways.” My family has never been rich in terms of money, we’re pretty far from it. But we’ve always been rich in things…

In the early years of my childhood my mother had been only in the states for only couple of years. Consequently, when my mother was entering the United States she had lost one of her shins, and for a short time was disable until, she finally got help from a friend who contacted her doctor and donated a prosthetic leg. Even through trouble times my mother never let nothing get to her, so right away she got up and found her first job at a local restaurant that didn't require any social security or to speak the english language, yet in effect it didn't pay so well. Thereupon, our lives wasn't like an average Joe. Our home was a size of shoe box only four walls, one large bed, a sink, toilet, and a small gas stove all in one room, yet my mother never shed light how small our home was but how bless we are so we all stayed faithful. When it was time for school my mother couldn't always afford us to buy us new clothes, so we went shopping at the flea market or garage sales. As the school year ended families were heading to summer vacation and going out of town. Unfortunately since our financial standing we never had the chance to pleasure summer vacation. However, I didn't mind not having an average summer vacation, because my version of summer was staying back with my mother listening…
