Introduction
I. I never thought that my life’s journey would sound so bad, yet at the same time impact and influence so many of our next generation.
II. I have been in and out of jails, while simultaneously taking lives and saving lives.
III. As I introduce myself to you, I will explain how my life’s journey, has pushed me toward my major in college, so I can continue to touch people, even after death.
Body
I. As an only child, growing up in a small hick town, with two truck stops between us and Los Angeles, I was left to survive with mostly my imagination, which was inspired by relatives.
A. Thank God, my family roots, include a long history of being protectors of society. At every family function, I would be …show more content…
mesmerized as I sat and listened to the countless war stories that would be told by my relatives.
B. With these stories of heroism, both in military and law enforcement, I aspired to emulate their morals and values.
C. The inspiration pushed me toward boy scouts, and becoming a Deputy Explorer. Both allowed for not only meeting new friends, but further instilled the morals and values of my relatives, as I would serve my community.
II. My time in and out of jails, emerged after becoming a law enforcement officer.
A.
Although a native of Northern Los Angeles County, and after several years as a Los Angeles County Deputy Explorer, It was the County of Ventura that hired my first, as a Deputy Sheriff. As luck would have it, after a year in Ventura, the hiring freeze was lifted in Los Angeles County, allowing me to return home as a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff.
B. Before I became a street cop, as with most Sheriff’s Departments, I started working in the jails. Los Angeles County jails are considered to house the toughest criminals, in the world’s largest jail system.
C. As a street cop, I worked several patrol stations. I worked as a training officer, narcotics, vice and was also assigned to several multi-agency task forces, including undercover assignments. I have served during fires, floods and riots, and have had the unfortunate experience of taking people’s lives. However, I have been blessed with saving countless lives, and I am a proud recipient of the department’s medal of valor.
III. I have been injured in the course of my career several times. The last and most serious, occurred fighting with a suspect who was under the influence of PCP. My back was broken, and during the sixteen hour surgery, I died twice. Obviously I survived, as I am talking to
you.
A. God is good, as he has a greater plan for us. His plan for me, was returning to education. I obtained my high school teaching certificate, and have gone on to teach at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Explorer academy, through reserve forces bureau in conjunction with the local high school district.
B. This change in my life path, has allowed me to follow my passion for helping people, along with law enforcement.
C. Ultimately, setting my sights on finishing my higher education, as an example to the young adults in my community.
Conclusion
I would conclude with a quote, that I pass on to every graduate of the academy. “Each generation goes further than the generation preceding it because it stands on the shoulders of that generation. You will have opportunities beyond anything we've ever known” (Reagan, 1981).
