It was a hot humid day in Naples, Italy on October 28th 1922, the sun beating down on the dark olive skin of the Castansa family as they rush through side alley’s and dodge vehicles in the street, racing against the clock, and trying not to lose one another, just to meet a small white boat, hidden in a cove on the Tyrrhenian harbor. Out of breath, with dark hair windblown and out of line, the Castansa family steps foot onto the boat, where many more families sit and lay. They watch from a far distance as the Italian military march the streets announcing that Benito Mussolini has become prime minister and now gains full power over Italy. The boat floats further away from the port and the Castansa family gazes upon the country that will …show more content…
William takes Enzo down to Arthur Avenue in Bronx, New York; he shows him the brick covered building that stands before him “This building here, Enzo, shows potential, every time I see it, I see a place that can grow big and successful, but every time I see it I could never imagine anyone I know making it the successful business I know it can be, but the second I met you, you put a light in my eye that changed that view for me, every time I looked at you, I saw the business man to make this brick building become the successful business I know it can be, so Enzo I want to give this to you, the same way I gave that building to Marisa, do what you like with it, but I will give you all the resources you need to make this big and powerful.” Enzo shakes Williams hand thanking him countless times and says “I can’t thank you enough William, you already have done enough for me, I’m speechless, this is incredible, I wish to make this a pizza shop and if you don’t mind I would like to make Johnny my co-owner.” William approves of Enzo’s request and they continue on, going home to deliver the good news to Gulianna and Johnny. After a couple years Enzo Marino pizzeria becomes a large success, the Castansa and Marino family own a pizzeria in each burrow of New York and have become very wealthy. The families continue to work hard and William is proud of the business and people that he created. Drew and Marisa wed and have a daughter named Alessandra. What is a legacy? Lin Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton described it as “planting seeds in a garden you never get to see”. In a similar way, the Broadway musical, In The Heights, sings about continuing what is passed down to you because one day it may be gone. One song in particular titled, “Paciencia y Fe” inspires me to work as hard as I can just like Abuela Claudia did when she immigrated from Cuba. The Broadway hits’ harmonies and melodies have instilled in me a sense of hope for the future, where I can continue a family legacy.…

When Benito Mussolini concluded his violent and semi-legal seizure of power in Italy on the 29th October 1922, the Fascist era began in victory as crowds of Blackshirts rushed to the capital to celebrate their leader. The aim of this essay is to explain the Fascists’ rise to power in Italy. Thus, whilst the highly repressive nature of Fascism cannot be understated, this essay will focus solely on Italy before Mussolini seized control. Why was Italy the first European country to succumb to Fascism? What factors in her development meant that people were willing to toss aside liberal parliamentary democracy…

From what I recall, the day was heated, as were most days living on the top floor of a run down, income based apartment complex. Our second hand wall air conditioner sucked, and we were miserable. While annoyingly listening to the foreign toddlers run up and down the hallway in their diapers, I made the decision; it was time to move.…

I can’t seem to wrap my head around how drastically things can change in a short amount of time. It seemed as if I was in El Salvador a few months ago, when in reality it’s been two years. I can still remember every single detail of my trip. From getting coconut water when first arriving to saying goodbye to family before heading to the airport. All I can picture is the beautiful green fields and the little corner shops. I can still hear the sound of kids playing in the streets and the ringing bells of ice cream carts. The image I have of El Salvador is completely different to what it is like now.…

In the summer of 2013, I departed from my home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to go and spend an entire month in Bârlad, Romania. Up until this point I had never left the United States, except for a day trip up to Canada. The distinct zing of annoyance at my mother’s insistent demands for photos tugged at my patience, and internally shuddered as my shoulder brushed against Vladimir’s. He was to fly with me to Romania, attend the archeology camp with me, and then I would return home alone. Turning my gaze up to his face to scowl at him and then glance at my mother, pushing a distinctly fake smile unto my face as she snaps one last photo. The next fifteen hours turned into a sloppy blur of airports, long and cramped flights, and irritation: Vladimir, the perpetual pain in my butt. My animosity towards him is built out of how he treats women, his own assumed self-importance, and teenage anger that just needed a target.…

I dislike being asked “Where are you from?” because I do not consider myself from any specific place. I have moved around several times as a child, which has given me the opportunity to meet different kinds of people each from distinct walks of life. Being faced with the challenge of meeting new people has taught how to come out of my comfort zone at any given moment. The experiences I have had in life has caused me to become an outgoing, hardworking, and very multicultural person.…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…

One of the most challenging things a person can experience is leaving everything you’ve ever known behind and starting completely over somewhere else. Eva does this in the Lost in Translation by moving from Poland all the way to Canada when she is just a teenager. When I was sixteen years old my family moved from Minnesota to Texas. This isn’t quite as drastic of a change as in Lost in Translation, but many of the things Eva experienced I can relate with even if I just crossed numerous state line borders. Eva says “My mother says I’m becoming “English.” This hurts me, because I know she means I’m becoming cold.” I’ve realized as I’ve lived in Texas for the last four years I’ve started to say stuff and do things I would have never done in Minnesota.…

I am the eldest of three to a school teacher and professional musician turned deli clerk. I grew up on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Like most of my classmates, I qualified for free or reduced lunch. It is difficult for families to find any house to rent year-round, never mind a safe one. I remember in one house we weren’t allowed to jump, or run for fear the floor collapsing. I had classmates who didn’t have enough to eat; one of my best friends in middle school was a foster child whose mother struggled with addiction. I was among the few who, though poor, was well cared for and loved by my happily married parents. I believe that in a “civilized” society no one should have to struggle for the most basic necessities. At first, I was not…

It’s Monday, December 9th. Today just seems unusual, like something big is going to happen! I wonder what it will be for a split second, then go back to studying for the Latin America quiz we have tomorrow. Mr. Fielder announces what questions we should highlight on our worksheets. I watch him go back to his desk. I look up and out the window, I see the glistening shimmer of fresh snow dancing in the sky. I cherish every second of it, wishing the time would go by slower. As time creeps closer to 12:20 p.m., the more I shudder at the thought of having to go to room 224. I finish making my flashcards, using splendid handwriting, and proper spelling and grammar. The clock whispers 12:18 p.m. in my ear, I turn white as a ghost.…
