Personal Narrative: Joining The Local American Legion
My wife and I recently moved from Colorado to Tennessee. We moved because of family, so we could be closer to help out. It was a big decision for us. I grew up in Tennessee but haven’t lived here for almost 25 years. She made her visit to Tennessee in July of this year to look for a house. We were looking for something to get involved in so we decided to join the local American Legion since we are both retired military.
We joined in November and saw that they were doing some things for local veterans and homeless around the holidays so we signed up to assist. Since I am currently not working and only going to school full time I was able to help out the legion a lot this last month.
The project they had set up was to gather household items, donations from others or acquire specific items that people had requested in need. As we gathered the different supplies we sorted them out and make boxes for people throughout the community. The Legion had addresses of some of local veterans and they also advertised for people to their information to the Legion if they were in need of supplies.
Last week we delivered over 120 boxes of food and supplies to local families throughout our community. It was great seeing how happy the people were to see that others cared for their wellbeing and took the time out of their

I of course chose the American Legion to help out because they support veterans which is very important to me but they also help others. This is a vital thing especially at this time of year when there are so many that need help. No matter which way you look at Christmas, form the religious aspect or more of secular, it is still about helping each other. Once a month, our organization, Ketchikan CPOA helps the local Salvation Army Soup Kitchen prepare meals, serve and clean up, I have dedicated three years of monthly service to helping plan, prep, and cook and serve the citizens of Ketchikan, AK who need it. This service has had a profound effect on my life. The most memorable time I can recall was my first time attending the soup kitchen. I enjoyed meeting the staff at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, working with my fellow Coast Guard men and women to prep the meal, and to meet the patrons who attended breakfast that day.…

DAV helps returning veterans with emotional, physical, and financial needs. They have been serving veterans with mental health issues for over half a century. Congress chartered the American Legion in 1919 under Title 36 of the United States Code. They were founded by veterans returning from Europe after World War 1. It is the nation’s largest wartime Veterans organization headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. At last polling there are over 3 million members in 14,000+ posts throughout the globe. They are committed to the mentorship of our youth and provide sponsorship of programs within the communities they are located in. I am a member of this organization that stands as an advocate for American Veterans of the U.S. Military. They preserve Patriotic and Honorable ties within the community by promoting strong national security and lifelong dedication to fellow services members and old veterans like me.…

I volunteered in Salvation Army to provide help in coat give-away program. There was a big box filled with not arranged coats for both genders and all ages. I took off all coats from the box and put them on a large sheet that helps me to divide the coats into different categories: boys, girls, women, and men. I folded each group and returned it to the box.…

I had an amazing opportunity to volunteer at the Salvation Army building on 4th Street, San Jose. The Salvation Army was founded by General William Booth and started in 1865. Since then it has grown to almost 1,150,666 members. It runs through the Protestant Church and they believe in the Holiness Movement. As of currently its headquarters is in London and they can be located in 127 different countries. The reasoning of its name is because it consists of officers, soldiers and adherents who are known as Salvationists. This means to bring salvation to those in need and to the poor.…

One might wonder what a fifteen-year-old was doing standing atop a thirty-yard dumpster, chainsaw in hand, and yelling, "Give me more! It can hold more!" During my ninth grade year I saw an opportunity to complete my Eagle Scout project, helping the Lenape Valley Church remove massive piles of downed pine branches fallen during an early March ice storm, creating an eyesore and complaints from the local community. The project I was tackling was Herculean, and I, compared to now, very inexperienced at leading people. But it is Boy Scout’s duty to give back to his community and I had promised that the enormous piles of branches and snow would be gone before Easter.…

While the solution may seem much, with cooperation from everyone it will all become possible. All homeless people deserve to be happy and living their lives to the fullest, especially the veterans who have only aided our country when we needed it. Through the organization, it will be possible for homeless veterans to become self-sufficient once again. One by one they’ll be able to find homes and live as part of the community. Things do not change overnight, but with perseverance and effort, one by one it will gradually change. With each step taken, one less homeless veteran will be suffering on their…

In August of last year, I left the military behind to move to San Antonio for college. Texas seem to be the easiest place in the world to learn to be an Engineer and surround myself with extraordinary people like Veterans. Friends and family were somewhat shocked at my response to depart for school after being discharged from the military. They expected me to return home, since I had no support system and I would be facing the vigorous demands of going to school. They understood that most times, Veterans just work to “make ends meet” and end up just wasting their lives away. It was true, I had issues in…
