What do you see when you look in the mirror? Are you pleased, or do you immediately come up with an endless list of insecurities? As a child one of my favorite memories was laying around the house with my older sister on rainy days. We would leave the windows open so we could hear the rain coming down on the tin roof over our patio, while watching reruns of our favorite tv show “America's Next Top Model”. I always thought that these women were gorgeous and I would catch myself constantly comparing their looks to my own. I wanted to be just like them until I realized the unrealistic expectations that they had to live up to. A sizeable butt and breasts, but not too large; they have got to be proportional. A skinny waist, impeccable hair, blemish free face although even with clear skin you are expected to cake on makeup because no one is actually pretty without mile long eyelashes, the perfect smoky eye, and exemplary contouring. Society has idolized these things as “beautiful” and shamed the girls that do not meet these standards; however, society should be making everyone feel confident in their bodies. Girls need to know that it is okay not to have an “hourglass figure” so they don’t…

The Shared Vision I am currently in the process of crafting includes working for an organization that will challenge me to grow both in knowledge and as a person. Peace Corp is one organization that can give me what I want out of my company and organization and how I am going to get that out of my new organization. At this time I am trying to link my personal vision to the organization’s potential in order to help myself align the organization’s purpose with my own purpose (vision): and to prepare the individual groundwork for creating a shared vision. I am at a crossroads on my career path, where I can either I can decide on my personal vision and try and line up my career with that vision or I can let someone else determine what type of work…

One thing that sets me apart from the other candidates applying to the University of California is my hard work. I have always been smaller than other kids my age. At 15 years old I was 4’ 10’’ and looked like I was eleven years old. Although this was an advantage at the airport, when I would begin to take off my shoes and the TSA Officer would look at me and say, “Don’t worry twelve and under can keep their shoes on.” I was often discredited for my size. Especially because I played volleyball, a sport known for its height. I constantly struggled to make a team I deserved to be on because people would see my height and automatically think I was not capable. Although my height often led me to feel discouraged and angry it eventually taught hard work.…

I have debts of my own and still carry debt from my previous marriage. I tried to find more work during summer so I could save money for the green card fee, but I did not succeed. In September my classes return and I won't be able to work more than part-time. Adding to that I need to purchase books for those classes. What I currently make helps me to pay the minimum in my credit cards and other bills, and I spend the rest of my income in food, gas and personal needs. The savings I have is what is left of my tax return and college refund, and I try to save it in case I become unemployed and then could still pay the minimum in my bills until employed again.…

I have learned quite a bit as a runner and as a person over the past year. Most importantly I was honored to serve as one of the captains for both the cross country and track/field teams in my final year of high school. Through being a captain of such a big team, like Novi, I learned the ins and outs on how to make the TEAM successful. It all starts with an individual goal. You have to set a standard for yourself, in order for you to have some idea of what you want. By creating a goal it will allow you to self-motivate yourself to positively impact yourself and the team. The saying “80% of racing is mental, 20% is physical” is very true in this sense. You have to take extra measures in helping your mind focus to be able to achieve any goal in life.…

About six years ago in the small town of Union Springs, Joshua and I had one heck of an adventure. It all started because of this old creepy house that was behind our own. We were only nine and 12 years of age; my brother being the oldest. This being said, the curiosity of a youngster began to set in. For years upon years, we stayed clear of this house. At night, the house made scary noises as the wind blowed through the broken windows. One night, my brother walked into my room and told me with a confident voice, "I got a plan to get into the house." The next morning, I heard Mom and Dad talking about visiting their sick parents. They told Joshua and I that they were leaving for a day. We thought nothing of it; mom usually left enough food for us to eat on for a day. Besides, this was not the first time we stayed at home alone. Hours after my parents left, I heard my brother in my dad's closet. I asked him what he was doing he said, " I am getting prepared," and he was getting a gun. I rushed into my room and got my switchblade; I told him that I was ready. So we began to walk to the old, beat up house. We knocked on the door like two idiots, even though we knew nobody stayed there. Joshua kicked the door down, and a gust of cold wind hit our faces. We began to look through the house, and suddenly, we fell through an old wooden floor. Believe it or not, we landed on over $500,000 of cash. Shocked out of our minds, we started rolling in the money and throwing it into the sky; what any youngster would do. It turned out that the house behind us was a drug house of money. Who knew, but the story is not over just yet. Soon after, we suddenly heard a car pull up in the driveway of the house. Two gangster-looking type of guys slowly got out of the car. One with what appeared to be an empty sack. "Could it be that they are coming for their money," I frantically asked my brother. He slowly pulled out my dad's AR-15 from behind his back and cocked a bullet into the…

The biggest problem that I had to face as a young soldier was standing up for my own mistake. The day the case was closed, was the day I proved my Army values. It happened within a blink of an eye. We were interrogated by the authorities. I knew my career was going to end so I decided a decision according to my Army values. Even though few people wanted me to do what they asked me to do; I followed what I believe is right because it is time to start being an adult and face my own problems.…

As far as topics that interest me are concerned, none are more relevant to me than the topic of failure. This past year was significant in that it has seen the failure of multiple intimate life goals of mine, some of which I've pursued for years, others, for months. However, the failure of these goals manifested all at once making me grasp for explanations. Initially, my perception of these failures was negative, similar to that of most people who fail to realize self-determined goals. However, as time went on and life unfolded, I've come to realize that my negative perception of these failures in particular, and failure in general, was skewed, flawed, and was a result of premature judgement of outcome. For one, my failure in fulfilling these…
