I had kept the cottage on the hill in sight all night and can sense there are two humans in the dwelling. The sun started to rise and the darkness faded, an older human female leaves the dwelling. She gets into a small car and drives down the road towards town.…
Brother is accountable for Doodle’s death since he was warned by the doctors not to push him, but he disregarded it and tried to make him like a “normal” boy. As Brother thinks back to him and Doodle walking home from Old Woman’s Swamp, he confessed, “The faster I walked the faster he walked, so I began to run” (Hurst 394). Brothers walking pace displays how he walked faster, just to make Doodle walk faster. Since Brother did this he pushed Doodle too far, putting his life in danger. Brother teaches Doodle how to swim and row, he made Doodle “swim until he turned blue and row until he couldn’t lift an oar” (Hurst 391). Brother wants Doodle to learn faster, so he makes him practice heavily. If Doodle hadn’t of had the heart disabilities that…
Wow, this quote from, Ethno Autobiography, written by Jürgen Werner Kremer and R Jackson-Paton really stood out to me in such an enlightening way. I related to this statement because, I feel, that many people whom are, WEIRD, do tend to look upon other peers this way. These types of people don’t take the time to understand someone, get to know them on a personal level – what they have been through, where they lived, defining moments that they have had and finding out their long term and short term endeavors. For instance, one thing that I can relate this to is college applications. Therefore, due to the overpopulated college system we have in place there is no time to holistically get to know a single student, so that’s why doing an analytical…
At the beginning of the year it felt like I would have never been able to write any paper that was more than two pages long, it just seemed impossible, but for the research paper I actually had to stop myself from going off and writing a twelve page paper. I will admit and say that English is not my strong suit, in fact it is probably one of my more difficult classes. But just because it is difficult does not mean I don’t like it. I like looking for topics that interest me and still fit in with the guidelines, I like getting involved in the paper and researching the topic until it feels like my head is about to explode. I never saw any of that coming, I thought that I was going to have to go through English and just pray…
“ Boys, you are going into the city to learn how to trade and I don’t want any complaints !” bellowed father.…
The first time I met Anastasija was not quite the first time she ‘met’ me. In particular, before starting her high school education at NOVA International Schools, I had heard of Anastasija and her interests through my contact with one of her cousins, Ms. Bela Gligorova, who was my guidance counselor at that time. I was introduced to Anastasija in person in December 2010, right after I finished my college applications. An inquisitive young mind, a polite and thoughtful person, Anastasija’s curiosity and questions about my college application process and my high school accomplishments, struck me as novelty, since Anastasija was only in seventh grade at the time.…
It's Thursday, the day of the Farmers Market in Swansea, Il. This market takes place every Thursday at the Rural King parking lot, during the summer months of April thru October. My grandfather Norm started this event about 4 year ago, with just around 3 vendors. Now the business booming, with approximately 15 vendors participating ,vendors now range from wooden sculptures, to jewelry, and even Shea butter to help eliminate dry skin. Norm was born and raised in Belleville, il where he and his wife Deloris raised four children Mary ,Mike, Tom ,Barb. When Norm was young he attended Belleville west high school, where upon he found his first job working in Sears sales department. Later into his career he found an interest in auctioneering, and created his own family business, called "Geolat auction". After 30 years of being an auctioneer, he retired and began his real passion in agriculture. At his house in Belleville Norm owns around 3 acres of land that he uses to grow peppers, tomatoes, beets, turnip, and even square watermelon. Norm was…
“How would you guys feel about moving?” Those words both excited and frightened me. They were not surprising to hear, as there had been hints that it might happen for a long time, but I was still shocked. Leaving my home of twelve years, where I had gone through school, made friends, and grown up, was not going to be easy. At the same time, however, it represented new opportunities that I didn’t have in the suburbs of Dallas. I imagine that this was what Deo and the Lost Boys of Sudan felt as they journeyed to their new lives in America, but on a much lesser scale. As difficult as it was to move to rural Northwest Iowa, I cannot imagine the difficulty of immigrating to the United States from the war-torn parts of Africa. At the same time, through reading and watching their stories, I was able to relate somewhat because of my own experiences. I have realized as a result that I should…
For most athletes, it takes hard work and effort to become successful; for others it may come natural so they do not have to work as hard. Usain Bolt, who is a 9 times Olympic Champion, has the natural ability to run track. As a result, he is not forced to work as hard as other track athletes such as Yohan Blake. While Blake is still just as successful, he must put in twice the work of Usain to reach his full potential. Like Yohan Blake, I am one of the people who has to put in hard work and effort to reach my full potential.…
My Aunt Dori has always been different; however, I never truly realized how different until a few years ago. She has severe cerebral palsy. I have always known, nonetheless it did not fully sink-in until August 3, 2003. This particular day I had witnessed her having a grand-mal seizure. I remember being terribly afraid and confused. The scent of disinfectant filtered deliberately through the air. The aroma filling my nostrils gradually at first, then all at once. The hospital seemed empty, and hair-raisingly cold. Lots of concrete pillars, large windows, and white linens everywhere I looked. I was ten years old, and no one would reveal what was happening. I can remember my mother telling me with a worried smile, “Do not worry, sweetheart.…
Taking into consideration my Libyan heritage, one might say I was able to experience the best of both worlds as a first generation Libyan-American. They wouldn’t be wrong, growing up, I was influenced by the cultural aspect of a Libyan as an American citizen. I partook in many common Libyan traditions, for instance, I would eat couscous most nights for dinner and learned how to play the darbuka, a Libyan drum held sideways and played with the fingers. I was convinced that everyone lived this way, and I knew nothing outside of my bubble of comfort. It wasn't until my first trip to Libya, during the reign of Dictator Mummar Gadafi, that I realized not everything in the world was perfect and that my childhood was more Americanized…
What comes to your mind when you hear the word hero? My kind of hero is one that will try as hard as they can even if they know they can’t do anything to help it or make it better. My kind of hero is one that will fight even if it wont get them anywhere. My kind of hero is one that will be selfless when it comes to others. And when I think of a hero I think of a very strong special somebody that will do anything for anyone just to consider there feelings. My kind of hero is my little man Wyatt.…
Stories often have a main character that is centered on because he/she fails at some responsibility of theirs or falls short of their goal. In "A Father 's Story" written by Andre Dubus, Luke Ripley is a character that succeeds in his responsibilities as a father. Luke shows love, compassion and above all a protective instinct and desire to help his daughter. He emphasizes that he is very religious although perhaps not very devout. All of these characteristics help him fulfill his fatherly duties to his daughter during her stay at his house.…
Growing up, I noticed a lot of discussion about financial problems between my parents. It’s not that we were becoming poor, it was because of our growing family needing more supplies. My mother just gave birth to my little brother when I started noticing the financial issues my family were facing. As a little girl, I do not know how our finances worked all I knew was many bills were due and I knew it because when I was a little girl I liked to practice reading and those bill statements were the papers that attracted my interest due to its colorful paper.…
